cuz it's too quite around here

i included super mario allstars instead of the japanese mario 2 because it included lost levels and i'm pretty sure nobody here got to play the jap mario 2 first time 'round. plus it has updated graphics and stuff. also i left out the gameboy wario games even though it is meant to be mario land 3. i left out yoshi's story, but yoshi's island counts as mario world 2. i know. donkey kong is not mario. console only motherfucks. no game & watch shit either. no obscure jp only famicon disk system games or fassybreed pc educational games. fuck dr mario. actually i'll put that in anyway cuz it is choice. no mario kart either, just platformers and rpgs. sorry but i am not counting gba remakes. no luigi's mansion. fuck luigi. in vague chrono order. don't fuck with me.

The allstars choice is throwing me off. It's kind of like having a best-of album choice, it's just not right.

I'M FUCKIN WITH YOU

damn. this is really hard.

I guess I'll be boring and go with SMB3. Super Mario World blew my pants off, but it's just not hard enough.

Z S, Friday, 27 April 2007 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i realised that straight after i posted it. i just figured it would be dumb listing nes jp mario 2 when obviously nobody played it until mario allstars. my bad. but i guess it serves you right for not ctrl-f mario 64 immediately

SMB3.

You know, the best one "critically" is apparently Yoshi's Island... I can't get behind that. SMB3!

forget that. who voted for dr. mario?!
what a waste of time that game is.

funny farm, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:18 (sixteen years ago) link

hey i wasn't criticising! i figured it would get a vote or two, it's a choice game. i think recently if i want some simple mario action i'll usually choose to play nsmb over mario 1

creme1, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:13 (sixteen years ago) link

tofu, you're not the only one who only likes NSMB, the consensus in my Ottawa klick is that it's the best (at least, of those who've played it)

Will M., Saturday, 5 May 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i love nsmb. i wasn't dissing that game. i was dissing dr mario. besides the music, that game has nothing going for it.

"dissing"

Why the All-Star h4te?

Will M., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

SMW and All-Stars were the first console games I ever played so I have a special place in my heart for them.

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i just got original SMB on Wii VC. it is some fun. about 3.50's worth :-D

one year passes...

Shame this didn't wait a few months, be interesting to see how Super Mario Galaxy would have done. I think it wipes the floor with any of these that I've played (SMB, NSMB, 64, Sunshine - and also two of the RPGs, but they're not really that comparable).

agree with this, and also what andrew just said wrt wondering how Galaxy would have placed.

not a single vote for super mario land??!

darraghmac, Monday, 24 November 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

To rate SMG higher than any of the classic 2d efforts is crazy talk in my house. I like that game, but c'mon - it has several big flaws... mainly jumping on things head in 3d is still awkward and shooting star bits at things is just pretty unfun. Could also live without most of the story bits.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I really really like the 3d jumping, actually. I was struck by how intuitive the controls are under all circumstances, and they do pretty much test all circumstances. But I know some people don't find it so, it's just how I'm used to (I started platforming on the PS, with Crash and Spyro, and I think moved on to Ratchet and Jak before ever trying SM64). And there's lots of effectively 2d sections with stuff you couldn't do before - circular worlds, or shifting gravity.

Shooting star bits at the screen's not wildly fun, but you have to do it for maybe a minute total in the whole game. The story is... well, the story is present in any sense, which you're right isn't great. But again (apart from the start) it's maybe ten minutes total.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I love Galaxy, and would easily rate it above 64 and Sunshine (and, er, the Virtual Boy Mario) as the best 3D Mario. That said, there are at least 4 2D Mario games that near perfection.

super mario world 2: yoshi's island (snes) 0

f'ed up

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

I've somehow never played that game. feel that anecdotally it didn't sell that well, in the uk at least, in comparison with super mario world

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 6 June 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link

I think it made a decent number of people upset, it was called Super Mario World 2 but it wasn't really "Super Mario World 2"

for the record that was probably the one game to genuinely freak me out as a kid, not just because of how surreal and psychedelic everything was but also because losing baby Mario was legitimately a panic-inducing thing

(in retrospect that game is pretty messed up!!!)

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

five months pass...

I've been replaying mario 3 as I'm staying with a buddy right now and he has an ok little collection of genesis, snes and nes games and a weird janky system that plays all three. had legitimately forgotten how tough some of the levels in mario 3 are. i do really well in the first 4 or 5 worlds, hardly dying at all. then i do a trusty trick where on world 6 or 7 there's a fortress which you can farm for coins and so i usually arrive there with like 40 lives then bring myself up to the maximum 99. then on worlds 7 and 8 i just die like crazy and am incredibly thankful for the buffer of lives.

i really want to play super mario world again. i am fairly confident i prefer the gameplay of 3, but i loved the aesthetics of mario world, as in the map, the characters, plus the addition of the cape flying mechanism and yoshi.
