Should we limit this to the last decade? Because otherwise I'll probably just name a bunch of NES games.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 6 July 2009 21:14 (fourteen years ago) link
This is a pretty difficult thing to do these days, though, since if something's "cult" it basically means EVERYONE loves it due to the internet saying they shuold. Like BG&E would be a great example if it didn't gain traction from EVERY PERSON ON THE INTERNET basically saying "best ps2 game" all the time or whatever.
What's a good comparison to "cult" in this context? Like for example I've heard people call Oldboy a cult film, and yet virtually everyone I speak to about movies around my age has seen it and loves it.
― ㇱ (Will M.), Monday, 6 July 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link
or like Rocky Horror Picture Show gets called a "cult" movie all the time, since people seem to like it well enough but a particular subset of the population BREATHES it (at least one night a year, anyway). I suppose Earthbound is the Rocky Horror Picture Show of games.

yeah, wow, i saw that "limit to the last decade" thing and I was like "why look at the title? clearly this is the modern cult games thread, or else they wouldn't say past 10 years!"
WELL FOR THIS THREAD it is absolutely vital to mention Angelo Badalamenti's score for Fahrenheit-- far and away (imo) the best non-chippy OST, OAT. for me it honestly ranks almost as well, if not as well, as his work on Twin Peaks (and I can't think of anything else he ever did that good).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3OtHdipac4
i dunno whether it's actively 'good' or wut tho

the two or three vocal themes from persona 4 made me grin intensely the first two or three dozen times i heard them, but i really wished they switched it up a little before the endgame
― thomp, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link
listening to it kind of weird now i have a bit more of an idea about the sort of musical / technical choice-making required. almost makes me want to find out what kind of control you had with the megadrive sequencer, but not enough to actually start to get into chiptunes
it is kind of interesting the way the chip music deals with aesthetic limitations - 9 out of 10 videogames nowadays would go "oh shit someone died, break out the strings" where psiv has this theme:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61IAHniwWWw&feature=related
which was kind of a rare moment where i felt conscious of the aesthetic impact of the music as a kid - def. felt very odd going onto the world-explory theme after that

Yeah, all of Koji Kondo's stuff is on point. Back in the day everybody in my circle (that is, nerds) used to trade heavily in Final Fantasy MIDIs. Then when bandwith scaled, the actual OSTs. Kinda funny how "One Winged Angel" has achieved such prominence outside of gamer circles.
I used to have the Zelda: OoT OST on mp3. Also not ashamed to admit I have a bootlegged copy of the Soul Calibur OST from eBay (thought I was getting the real thing for $7.99).

You could even remix it yourself by moving around the level - jump into the water to get the string pads to join in, go into the underwater cave to start the drums, etc etc. I've spent many happy hours doing that.

― Telephone thing, Friday, 10 July 2009 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link
I honestly can't think of that many scores that really stuck with me, though- maybe the Valve logo theme (the moment In Half-Life 2 where you finally get the HEV suit back and hear the full-length version of the tune is one of my favorite audio moments in any game).
― Telephone thing, Friday, 10 July 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link
The dead space score is interesting to read up on how they did it. You can buy the soundtrack from EA. but if you ever want to listen to it more than once outside the game, you need to get your self seen to by a professional.
reppin' the Fahrenheit (indigo Prophecy) soundtrack as one that works like a film score not as a series of action cues.

"Rave On" really sounds like a merely generic house song, but in the context of the game it's fucking amazing, with that corridor... in fact the music and sound design for that whole game is incredibly unique and well done, if not very catchy or listenable outside of it.
Also goddamn "Indestructable", it's the worst SF song since I'MAHTAKE YOU FOR RIIIYIDE
