The music that plays in the cliff only lasts about two octaves before repeating but it extremely memorable and haunting.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:42 (nine years ago) Permalink

god i need to play through that game :/

Will M., Thursday, 3 April 2008 14:43 (nine years ago) Permalink

earthbound is on ds???

Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:03 (nine years ago) Permalink

there are SNES emulators. and if you can do japanese, there's earthbound on the GBA (mother 1+2 was released on one cart around the same time mother 3 came out iirc)

Will M., Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:36 (nine years ago) Permalink

ah, ok. i've never played earthbound, and i really want to!

Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:39 (nine years ago) Permalink

i wish i could just play on snes, 'cause i hate playing games on my pc, but shit is expensive on ebay.

Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:53 (nine years ago) Permalink

earthbound runs really well on the snes emulator for DS; I stayed up till 3am one morning playing it, but haven't gone back since

ds homebrew looks complicated!

Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:26 (nine years ago) Permalink

it... is. a wee bit. you just need the right kit, some time, concentration, and a heart that's true.

czn, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:34 (nine years ago) Permalink

it's actually extremely easy once you learn how to patch things with dldi.

there's also a translated nes rom of mother floating around called earthbound zero.

Creeztophair, Friday, 4 April 2008 01:58 (nine years ago) Permalink

Living things will be destroyed in the time traveling process, thus making it impossible to send a person back in time. There is a way around this though. He can take Ness’ and his friend’s souls and transfer them into robots, however they may never be able to return to their bodies of things go poorly.

one month passes...

i bet this isn't going to happen, and there will be even more online petitions.

(i don't know what that has to do with the topic. i just really like that gif.)

five months pass...

I started playing the translated Mother 3 ROM mentioned in the other thread, and enjoyed the first hour so much that I decided it would be better to first go back and play Earthbound first. Somehow I've never played it. I'm only 3 hours in but I'm having a grand ol' time!

Earthbound finally getting a WiiU VC release in both US & EU later this year
funny that an Earthbound cart almost costs the same as a WiiU these days - maybe the cart costs will start falling finally?

is that the first EU release?

the bitcoin comic (thomp), Thursday, 18 April 2013 00:52 (four years ago) Permalink

yes, it is. i don't know why i asked, i don't actually care v much

This is maybe the most delightful video game of all time.

hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 18 April 2013 01:07 (four years ago) Permalink

I've spent a lot of time trying to find other games that have this sort of quirky wacky cheeky legit-funny tone/vibe/whatever and have found nothing else.

Mother 3!!

"Psychonauts" comes close at times.

Mother 3 gets really intense toward the end.

crüt, Thursday, 18 April 2013 05:07 (four years ago) Permalink

It was delayed because it contains music samples that weren't cleared.

this game = my life right now

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 14:44 (two months ago) Permalink

nearly completed it. it's weird how easy this game is at points. like sometimes it's TOO easy. it just keeps giving you loads of items, more than you can carry, with places to rest and tool-up every few minutes. then next minute it'll become stupidly difficult. i imagine this is all very deliberate. i'm getting fed up of the photographer rocking up all the time.

I’m stuck. :(

I have the Wad of Bills but the band disappeared. SOMEONE TAKE MY MONEY.

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 11 January 2018 16:44 (two months ago) Permalink

give it to the manager of the theater (talk to him behind his desk)

Tbf Magicant / Sea of Eden is about a nightmare, so of course that part would be nightmarishly difficult.

fucking gutsy bat

clouds, Friday, 12 January 2018 04:42 (two months ago) Permalink

Dungeon Man cracked me up! The dungeon is stupidly easy - you can't really go wrong. My only regret is walking straight to the palm trees as soon as he joined my team so I didn't get a chance to use him in a fight

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Friday, 12 January 2018 10:02 (two months ago) Permalink

The good news is, you're only about 2/3rds through the game.
The bad news is, you have the Stongehenge base full of teleporting, backstabbing Starmen ahead of you.

Wes Brodicus, Friday, 12 January 2018 10:46 (two months ago) Permalink

Wes Brodicus, Friday, 12 January 2018 10:47 (two months ago) Permalink

yeah I'm on the Starmen bit right now and it's proving incredibly difficult. Even though I feel like I'm HP-d and PP-d up to the gills, they're total assholes. I got in a right f--ing up with a Starman/Robot combo who just kept reviving themselves just as I was about to kill them off.

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Friday, 12 January 2018 12:09 (two months ago) Permalink

so now apparently I took a trip inside my own mind and now i'm a robotic replicant of myself. this game...

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 15 January 2018 15:12 (two months ago) Permalink

got a feeling Giygas is nearby. I'm looking forward to getting my life back soon

When all else fails, pray.

Wes Brodicus, Monday, 15 January 2018 15:28 (two months ago) Permalink

I completed it! Little bit annoyed I didn't explore a bit more of the 'completed world' before going home and finishing the game off properly, but hey never mind

Badgers (dog latin), Thursday, 18 January 2018 16:26 (two months ago) Permalink

the first time i beat giygas i went back and talked to every npc just to see if they said something new

clouds, Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:57 (two months ago) Permalink

You can buy the empty house in Onett, to no effect.

Wes Brodicus, Thursday, 18 January 2018 22:09 (two months ago) Permalink

Yeah I did that. I was basically a billionaire by the time I completed it.

Badgers (dog latin), Friday, 19 January 2018 02:27 (two months ago) Permalink

If you're interested, dog latin, Mother 3 (a translated rom of which can be found fairly easily) is possibly even better, although it's a much sadder and darker game.

one way street, Friday, 19 January 2018 02:43 (two months ago) Permalink

100% agreed on that

Nhex, Friday, 19 January 2018 07:10 (two months ago) Permalink

Oooh, I didn't know there was a translation. I might look into cracking my SNES mini and loading it on. So is Mother 3 an indie / open source translation then?

Badgers (dog latin), Friday, 19 January 2018 08:53 (two months ago) Permalink

I also take it, it's not a SNES game?

Badgers (dog latin), Friday, 19 January 2018 08:54 (two months ago) Permalink

'twas for GBA but that might be emulatable
back when i played it though, it was an endless source of frustration that the hardware couldn't be emulated perfectly enough on PC to make the rhythm combat work right - that said I still loved the game so that should tell you something

Nhex, Friday, 19 January 2018 09:05 (two months ago) Permalink

The combat system works fine on a tablet with the My Boy emulator and an 8bitdo SNES controller.

My only gripe is that the music in Mother 3 is nowhere as good/iconic as Earthbound's; do not play if you hate saxophones.

Wes Brodicus, Friday, 19 January 2018 09:17 (two months ago) Permalink

Mother 3! The sequel to Earthbound!
