Anybody else planning to pick this up?

Looks a lot like more of the same - which probably isn't really a bad thing in my book...

It looks beautiful, but I stayed away from the first one on reports that it was really hard to play. Reviews suggest the same is true of this one. So in what ways was the first one hard to play? I tend to be of the view that if a game is too much work, then it's not worth my entertainment time.

I thought the controls and everything on the first one were great, so it wasn't hard to play in that sense. It was intentionally difficult. You couldn't button mash, you had to actually learn the various moves and techniques.

I'd say Sigma was probably the most difficult game I ever actually beat - but if I could do it, probably anybody could. As Dan I says, you can't really button mash (much) - every enemy you face can be deadly - you have to learn how to block and attack effectively - but what makes the game especially tough are the boss battles - where you really have to learn the pattern of the boss attacks (through observation), time your attacks pretty good, and have some luck. Most of the boss fights take many many tries and often seemed impossible. But eventually somehow - if you had the will to stick to it - you could win.

my experience was exactly how Jeff describes it, too. however, though there are a ton of awesome things about the game, by the end i was definitely playing it more to beat it and get it out of the way than for fun.

ok, this is really helpful; I'll rent it soon and see how it goes.

There's supposed to be a worldwide demo around the end of this week (or maybe next?) too.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 2 June 2008 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link

alright that will help too! good news

Euler, Monday, 2 June 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

"Button-mashing" kinda describes the only method I had for beating the boss in chapter thirteen. Overall though I think it may have been more difficult because you had to play relatively more defensively than in a lot of similar games.

two weeks pass...

Got my 360 back today and have finally started this. It seems good so far, but not much different from the first game. It's funny tho - since I played the previous one on the ps3 I keep thinking I have to shake my controller to do a stronger ninpo attack

The demo was pretty fun; I'd never tried NG1.

one year passes...

This is only £7.99 new in Gamestation which makes me think it might be shit but most reviews seem favourable. ILG opinions?

It's good fun but can get quite hard and there are a lot of severed body parts in it. Would definitely buy it for £8.

it's only £7.99 cos it's quite old now, onimo; did you ever play god of war, devil may cry or the original ninja gaiden? they're basically just fancy versions of streets of rage

NG2 is bollock hard tho

cozwn, Friday, 18 September 2009 13:43 (fourteen years ago) link

did anyone play devil may cry 4?

cozwn, Friday, 18 September 2009 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I gave up on DMC4 and NG2 at around the same point (less than 25% in). Neither really captured my attention. I wouldn't call either crap, but both seemed to suffer from a more of the same kind of feeling, where improved graphical resolution didn't equal an improved, more fun game to play. In particular, I remember being turned off by the long distance arrow shooting enemies in NG2 and confusingly designed paths you had to try to figure out (i.e. I kept getting lost). In DMC4 it was the frustrating swinging puzzles & unsatisfying combat. I never put both down in anger saying that's it, and meant to pick both up again, but here it is a year and a half later and both sit on my shelf untouched (though unsold, so there's maybe hope yet). Flashy, but soulless.

Played God Of War and loved it. Street of Rage fucking OWNED. Never played NG but I'm a fan of hack and slash things as long as t feels like there's a bit of skill involved in learning combos and moves rather than just kicking the shit out of your controller waiting for some enormous thing to die. I think I'll take a punt for £8.

Finally getting an HDTV in a couple of weeks so I'm looking forward to playing a few of my xbox games in glorious HD, and being able to read the instructions on Dead Rising.

dying for an HDTV here; I have an 24" HD monitor tht the xbox looks amazing on so I imagine anything from 30" up would be killer

thankfully they're pretty cheap now, but: lolrecession

cozwn, Saturday, 19 September 2009 10:47 (fourteen years ago) link

onimo - Ninja Gaiden is a much harder than the God of Wars. Keep in mind, if you haven't played Ninja Gaiden Black before, that the general consensus is it's a better game in every way than Ninja Gaiden II. It's also backwards compatible and available as a digital download for 1200 ms points.

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 19 September 2009 15:28 (fourteen years ago) link

took a punt on this fpr £5 in gs; harrrrrrrrrrd
