FEII was number 2 in my ballot in the videogames poll. It is incredible. I play it for a few weeks every couple of years. Wonderful MIDI classics. Terrible bugs in the retail version.
One of my favourite video games is playing this all night, every night for six or seven weeks of an Easter holiday in 2002 (lol oxbridge) and listening to nothing but Autubahn and Remain in Light on repeat.

the first time i saw Elite running on my friends dads BBC was the first big gaming wtf moment for me. it looked so amazing, we took over his computer & played it for months. i never played any of the follow ups, although really enjoyed playing Oolite a few months ago. has anyone played Eve Online or Vega Strike or some other similiar MMORPG?
― zappi, Thursday, 12 June 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link
Eve Online <---ends up talking about elite
― DG, Thursday, 12 June 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link
I have never managed to dock the effing ship so I can't say I'm mad for these games.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 12 June 2008 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link
well Eve like most mmorpg's is free to trial, so check it out if you like Elite games. You may get into it, I found it a bit too menu based.

I remember a competition in a comp mag years ago, where people could win a star/planet named after them in Frontier. Did that happen?
― Ste, Thursday, 12 June 2008 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link
i think you might have to narrow it down a bit
― DG, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link
I remember Amiga Power giving it 98%. And I remember the boxed game came with a manual and a Gazetteer, which I thought was the coolest thing in the world at the time. And copy protection like "what is the first letter on the tenth line of page 45 of the manual". If you got that wrong you were attacked by a swarm of police as soon as you took off. I used to get it wrong deliberately to improve my "combat skills".

― caek, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:36 (fifteen years ago) link
my combat skills were pretty pants though, maybe i should have trained that way. the battle would last for ages, and would end in a single missile taking me out. After all the fucking about with buying commodities and hyperspacing around to the right systems, dieing that quick would really ruin my day.

for the fcking thrill of it, i downloaded frontier elite II last night.
after figuring out how to take off and not fall back down to the ground again, i entered air space. and then spent ages with the galactic maps unsuccessfully trying to find the hyperspace option. i never found it. so i flew around one solar system for a while, it was nice.

urgh i still suck at combat in this, goes on forever. and this game would be a beaut if it didn't have so many bugs. my speed gets frozen if i'm on autopilot and it interupts me to do battle.

― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:01 (nine years ago) link
I just had a look at the main web site. It's £40 for the game, but they also seem to want people to buy additional paint jobs for the ships, at £10 a pack!
Well that's me out.
― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link
Tempted, but in these days of steam winter sales, £40 for one game isn't happening.

bought in the steam sale, ticks all the old first encounters/ original elite boxes, really enjoying it. Stevie, my cpu is not fast, 4GB ram and only a Radeon 6670 1Gb, and it keeps a steady 31/32 FPS.
― thomasintrouble, Saturday, 18 July 2015 14:47 (eight years ago) link
it is £40 today! yikes! do you have to join steam to get the discounts?

but no planet landings?
― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Saturday, 18 July 2015 21:18 (eight years ago) link
It drops down to £25 fairly regularly - I'd expect another sale at the start of August to coincide with Gamescom
Talking of which they have a "big" announcement to make abt Elite there, smart money being on planetary landings which they've been hinting at for a while now

ie, this game with planetary landings would now cost me £70 ?
I'll wait for reviews and such, at the moment this game is beyond my reach
― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:13 (eight years ago) link
If you buy the game now and the expansion later yeah but if you wait till it comes out £40 gets you the expansion and 'base game' (I agree this is a little confusing)
― DG, Monday, 24 August 2015 23:08 (eight years ago) link
ah right, but won't original buyers be a little pissed at that?

Not managed to get into Dangerous because my attention is way too short these days. But I fired it up the other night, sat there listening to my podcasts whilst watching ships flying around the spaceport. In vr it was quite nice.
Eventually bothered to try and learn some stuff, combat trained, figured out all the menus and space navigation. Almost gave up after my first mission to hyper-jump to another system was scuppered because a bloody big moon was in the way of my jump.
All in all, think I'm going to revisit as my interest was tickled.
