I know it's been delayed for like three years, but are we excited? It's out in like three weeks in the US.Is the demo live?

It's finally coming out? I'm interested for sure.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 January 2013 12:33 (eleven years ago) link
demo has been up on PSN for a few weeks nowlooks beautiful, not sure about the battle system though
― ばかザッピ (zappi), Thursday, 3 January 2013 15:40 (eleven years ago) link
what's it coming out for? PS exclusive?
― Mordy, Thursday, 3 January 2013 15:42 (eleven years ago) link
PS3 only. there was a DS version in Japan but that's never coming over because it came with a hugeass physical book that would cost too much to localize.

there's a LE of the PS3 game that comes with the book & a plushie, seems to be long sold out from everywhere though, scalpers already selling them on eBay for $$$ even though its not out yet

I played the demo for a bit and I apparently have no time for JRPGs anymore. It reminded me there is a reason I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since 2001.
But damn is it pretty. I just wish the gameplay wasn't from 1998.

i've put like 5 hours into it so far, this game does a lot of stuff right. and the stuff it doesn't do right i can forgive because it looks so fucking good.
― adam, Monday, 4 February 2013 18:58 (eleven years ago) link
about 10 hours in now, starting to get challenging. probably due to deliberate underlevelling tho.
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 4 February 2013 19:18 (eleven years ago) link
im playing on normal, it's not a total cakewalk, def have died a bunch of times, but wouldnt call it hard. but according to a friend who is like 30hours in, it does get pretty tuff
― zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 4 February 2013 19:21 (eleven years ago) link
loving this atm, battle system still a bit clunky but really shines during boss battlesas i said on the other thread would kill for next DQ to look like this, highly unlikely to happen though as 3DS is the de facto system in Japan for the foreseeable future

I am sort of getting back into computer games after some carpal tunnel problems put me off playing for the past decade or so. I did buy a PS3 last year, but killed my back after a solid day of playing Limbo, so now it's just my Netflix machine.
ANYWAY was curious about this and downloaded the demo - looks gorgeous but I've never played a turn-based RPG before and have no way to evaluate if this is a good/bad system. I actually found it completely confusing - does the opponent attack you while you're choosing your move, or are they waiting? Anyway (a) I died a lot and (b) should I buy this?
― Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 10 February 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago) link
its not really turn-based, things are playing out in real time (after you pick who is going into battle), so you are more watching how the battle is going and reacting to visual cues and issuing commands accordingly. so say at the start of a battle you pick a little guy and tell him to attack, then for a short period he will attack the target. if you notice that the enemy is gearing up for a big hit you have a couple of seconds to cancel the attack command and choose the defend command, so that when the enemy starts hitting your little guy his shield is up. not every little guy has a defend command, he might have one called evade, or maybe he is more of a magic dealer so keep him away from the enemy as much as possible. after a while your little guy gets tired so you have to swap him out with another, but he will recuperate after a short while. obviously there is a lot more to this but that's the basic idea of how battles go.as a battle system its ok, but works much better in boss battles, which can become more like a puzzle game as you try to figure out which attacks hit hardest and how best to counter the bosses powerful attacks.

I've only watched rather than played this - tbh I think I'd be bored by the endless pokemonesque stats and battles after a few hours - but the art is adorable. And oh god, the PUNS. THE TERRIBLE PUNS.
― Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 11 February 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I think I prefer games where the fighting happens first person (like Zedda and Red Dead I guess). Also concerned I would get squinty eye looking at those tiny stats on my TV across the living room.
What's the fighting in Skyrim like - is that turn-based too?
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 11 February 2013 12:20 (eleven years ago) link
It's first-person, but it's also the worst part of skyrim's gameplay.
― oppet, Monday, 11 February 2013 12:31 (eleven years ago) link
Zelda's third-person though isn't it? You see Link, you don't seen from Link's perspective.
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 11 February 2013 13:46 (eleven years ago) link
Ah, okay. Third person then. i.e. not RPG or Goldeneye style.

I kind of hit the wall with this not too long after finishing the fire mountain/volcano thing. Constant nagging feeling I'm not using my little creatures properly and should be doing a lot better. Can't tell if I should be trying to capture more, or better, creatures.

i feel like i need a free week to really enjoy this and i don't have a free week
― sassy, fun, and RELATABLE (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 4 August 2013 15:40 (ten years ago) link
I pretty much got all the way into it during a free weekend, played some insane number of hours (15? 20???) and played through pretty much all of the rest of it in 1-3 hr chunks during the week.
fields i had the exact same feeling about the little dudes at that point in the game, luckily later on you can fight some guys who give you RIDICULOUS xp gains (2000 for one guy, and then like 9000 for the other even later!) which really lets you see which guys will be awesome as you level them and which dudes will suck
my before-end-of-game recommendations for little dudes:
ESTHER: i find that her main character is really awesome for pretty much the whole game, good healing and damaging spells. OLIVER: i struggled to find something i like until quite a bit later into the game. there's a dude that you can get about halfway through the game (i think? after the mission with the chatty bulldog? i am being cryptic to avoid spoilers, if you know what i mean, then you know what i mean) called "dinoceros" who basically becomes an absolute beast after like 5 levels up.SOMEBODY ELSE: sorry for the minor spoiler if you didnt know a third person joins you. get him one of the -liths (paleolith? megalith? some name like that anyway), near castaway cove. its defense is absolutely insane. basically makes him impossible to kill.
there are some decent2nd/3rd options out there but as firsts, those three should dominate. i used the mite on oliver until i got that other guy... ugh does that thing get mediocre or what :(
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Monday, 5 August 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link
I beat the game using Oliver with the default mite guy, then Oliver himself against the final bosses. The mite becomes pretty bad later on, but it's not like the game is a challenge. I see that Gamefaqs recommends dinoceros too.

Exactly... As a result it's hard to tell how to upgrade your little creatures. I end up thinking of them as children and trying to be fair to them, and also since I have no way of knowing exactly how/why each one is useful or whether there's a real advantage to any of them.

Picked this up and am entertained by the design contrasts between Ghibli humans sharing a screen with Level-5 creatures. It's kinda jarring.
