So I inherited a PS3 with these games...

I was wondering (as a lapsed gamer) which ones are worth checking out and which are not..

Call Of Duty 3
Far Cry 3
Borderlands 2
Fallout 3
Batman Arkham Origins
Call Of Duty Black Ops 2
Batman Arkham City
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Battlefield 3
Uncharted 3

Thanks!

fallout 3 is classic. cod mw2 is good (multiplayer better than solo campaign imo), borderlands 2 is fun but only really played w/ friends not solo, arkham city is fun - i haven't tried origins.

Mordy , Monday, 17 February 2014 12:47 (ten years ago) link

far cry 3 can be really fun, just ignore the story.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 17 February 2014 14:12 (ten years ago) link

what are you looking for in a gaming experience

polyphonic, Monday, 17 February 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

I guess I like sandbox-y games, exploring or shooting I'm not so much a fan of fiendish puzzles and intricate storytelling.

MaresNest, Monday, 17 February 2014 15:17 (ten years ago) link

both the Batman games are pretty great IMO, and definitely sandboxy. Far Cry 3 as well. I really like Borderlands 2, it has a sprawling game world and loads of guns!

Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Monday, 17 February 2014 15:20 (ten years ago) link

seconded on the Batman games, Fallout 3 is great too

Nhex, Monday, 17 February 2014 15:34 (ten years ago) link

i love everything on that list except for uncharted which is a little too railsy for me, and i cant stand COD or battlefield

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 17 February 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

fallout 3 is definitely the most sandboxy of the bunch

Mordy , Tuesday, 18 February 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link

Thanks all, I started in with Far Cry 3, it's fun so far, woke up with a bad tattoo and am now friends with some mystical dude who looks like Spike Jones.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 15:57 (ten years ago) link

truly, the game of the millennial generation

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

I'm a dude who hates shooters and Borderlands 2 is SO RIDICULOUSLY FUN

good choice imho

FC3 is fun partly cos the character you play is an objectionable douchebag who has magical black people help him in his stupid "quest". It's also fun because of the excellent stealth sequences and being able to run around stabbing ostriches.

uh

iirc they are literally magical, not that that helps at all.

also you are describing me and dan in high school

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 16:32 (ten years ago) link

in the sense that it couldn't be more cliched in a variety of ways if it tried, including the assignation of races to the various characters, was what I was attempting to say

Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

it takes wildlife murder to heights unseen since Red Dead Redemption

omg John, dying

note to self: must play Red Dead Redemption and fulfill my wildlife-killing bloodlust

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

I skinned three boar and shot a dog in the face, not sure how I feel about that, apart from not very mystical

MaresNest, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 19:16 (ten years ago) link

i've been playing fc3 lately. it takes awhile to get going and eventually turns into a pretty fun/inventive fps. the protagonist will make you want to turn the barrel on yourself repeatedly.

bnw, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

it does sound like the batman games would be closest to what you want

bnw, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 20:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah Arkham City is amazing; Arkham Origins is basically the same gameplay and ergo also amazing but by the third go-round in this world I was feeling fatigue and never finished it

everything on your list except the CODs is worthwhile

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 22:33 (ten years ago) link

I'm curious about why the CODs are bad.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

Shot a load of rabid dogs today, that animal cruelty continues apace.

MaresNest, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

CODs aren't THAT bad. They're just.. wait, maybe they are.

Nhex, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

cods are murder simulator amusement park rides

three years pass...

I needed something to play blu-rays etc on and a co-worker was selling his PS3 cheap so I picked it up. I have not gamed in many years. It came w/ these, plus I picked up a couple others for a fiver from Value Village:

Metal Gear Solid Collection
Ratchet and Clank Future - A Crack in Time
The Last of Us
Heavy Rain
Elder Scrolls Oblivion
Beyond: Two Souls
Uncharted 1+2
Infamous 1+2
LEGO Star Wars + LOTR

So far I've tried the LEGO games (not for me), Heavy Rain (kinda cool but some o_0 writing/storytelling choices), Last of Us (very cool). Trying to figure out what else I should pick up, pls no Batman or US Army / cop shit

I've only played the first MGS so I'm looking forward to digging into those (it's the comp that features all the games up to MGS4)

I'm looking just for single player or local multiplayer shit, also.

I picked up the Dead Space games again recently for next to nothing and they are great fun.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 23 September 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link

I'll check those out. I'm amazed at how fast game prices plummet.

Demons' Souls, which you can only play on the PS3.

Some stuff is PSN only (like PS2 games) and there are frequent sales where a lot of stuff is much cheaper than usual, 50% or more off, so keep an eye out for those.

My advice would be to entertain yourself with what games you already own and gradually pick up others when a good deal appears, either online or on a b&m store.

Portal 2. One of the all-time greats. I'd recommend the first, as well, but you can only get it in the out of print Orange Box. I don't know if they made a physical copy of Fez, but it's available in the PSN store and highly recommended.

The games I've spent the most time playing are Just Cause 2, Skyrim, and GTA Online. Good dumb fun with (obviously) high replayability.

it's one of the older/bulky models so it can play PS2 discs

you got one of the backwards-compatible ones? nice!

Nhex, Saturday, 23 September 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

Apparently yes, though I have not actually tested that yet
