Ok I forgot they won one playoff round against the last iteration of the van gundy/Allan Houston/sprewell Knicks and beyond that I see a couple of "lost east first round" across a decade-plus where the east was generally considered somewhere between somewhat and majorly weaker than the west
― z-time champion (agent hibachi), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 12:36 (ten years ago) link
Vince forcing his way out did really kill whatever promise that era had though. I think we all know now that bosh is really good but not going to carry you far if he is the #1 option, no shame in that I guess, kind of like when Pau was in Memphis. I guess the trick is to realized when you have a second banana who looks like a franchise guy and move on to the next phase as soon as possible

never forget vince carter graduation scandal
In 2000–01, his third season, Carter averaged a career-high 27.6 ppg, made the Second Team All-NBA, and was voted in as a starter in the 2001 NBA All-Star Game, while the Raptors finished the regular season with a franchise-record 47 wins. In the playoffs, the Raptors beat the New York Knicks 3–2 in the first round, and advanced to the 2001 Eastern Conference Semifinals to face off against the Philadelphia 76ers. Carter and Allen Iverson played in a seven-game series that see-sawed back and forth. Carter scored 50 points on Philly in game three and set a NBA playoff record for most three-point field goals made in one game. On the morning of Game Seven, Carter attended his graduation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He had completed the requirements for his degree in African-American Studies the previous summer and said he felt receiving his diploma was personally significant.[15] Television ratings for game seven soared as one of the highest watched in NBC's history for a non-finals game. As the Sixers and Raptors increased their double team pressures on Carter and Iverson respectively,[16][17] the game winning shot came down to Carter who missed with 2.0 seconds remaining.[18] Afterwards, he was heavily criticized for his decision to attend his graduation by both media and fans. In July 2011, Iverson reflected back on the series. “It was incredible. (Carter) had great games at home and I had some great games at home, but both of us were just trying to put our teams on our back and win basketball games. It is great just having those memories and being a part of something like that.”[19]

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/10112168/jason-kidd-brooklyn-nets-ranted-assistant-lawrence-frank-loss
Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd reportedly used a 13-letter word in an expletive-filled rant against assistant Lawrence Frank following the team's loss in Orlando on Nov. 3, NBA.com reported Monday."Sit the (expletive) down! I'm the coach of this (13-letter word) team! When you're on the bench, don't (expletive) move," Kidd said, according to NBA.com reporter David Aldridge. The report did not offer further details of what the 13-letter word was.The argument ultimately led to Frank being reassigned to a reduced role which Kidd described as "doing daily reports."Frank was told at one point by somebody in the organization to curb his behavior on the bench during games and not be as active and demonstrative as he was earlier in the season, sources told ESPNNewYork.com. The week before he learned he would not be helping run practices or sit on the bench during games, it was definitely noticeable that Frank wasn't doing as much.

Eh, he has an expiring deal, so his contract will finally be off the books. Since they assumed he'd be healthy and ready to play a full season -- and they're gunning for the Finals this year -- they assumed they wouldn't similar same-season value in return for a former All-Star / 20+ppg scorer. Normally (and this was the case in probably the previous three seasons) they would've tried to ship him off, but the return value would've been so much better.
Plus I don't think that there many teams right now willing to part with commodities in return for a hobbled volume scorer.

Like, atm I read Granger Back This Friday and think, eh, he'll probably be back some Friday in January, who cares, ship is sailing pretty smoothly w/o him.
Bosh on tonight's game: "No, it's not a championship game. It's like the 20th game of the season. It's tough to play like there's no tomorrow when there is."
― Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link
yeah he could conceivably be very helpful to them in the playoffs
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link
He was probably going to start coming into the season, but at this point there's absolutely no way they could take Lance out of that starting line-up. I guess it won't hurt to have him coming off the bench and taking some shots, but honestly I'd rather have Scola shooting spot-up 17ft shots than Granger willing his way to 40% shooting.
― Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link
how long has it been since granger was playing totally healthy, like two and a half years?
― Clay, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link
The beginning of last season-- the Pacers set everything up with Granger as the only #1 option, he gets injured, and for the first half of the season the Pacers had an almost historically bad offense.
― Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link
theyre still only middling even tho everything seems to be clicking beyond anyones wildest dreams, if grainger could come back and score decently off the bench that could help to stabilize things for sure
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:32 (ten years ago) link
he could be a great scorer off the bench if he embraces the role

“I put a high premium on talent and character, and Rudy Gay has an abundance of both,” said Bryan Colangelo, the former Raptors general manager who acquired Gay from Memphis last January in a deal that was widely regarded as a salary dump by the Grizzlies. “Obviously, Pete (D’Alessandro) has a mandate to increase the talent level of his team as opposed to depleting it. This move is a pretty good indication of that.”
