Teams can claim an amnestied player at a reduced rate, with the waiving team responsible for paying the balance of the contract. The team with the highest bid acquires the player. If unclaimed, the player becomes a free agent.[6] Teams over the salary cap can only acquire an amnestied player if he becomes a free agent and the offer would be limited to the veteran's minimum contract.

― Spottie, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 06:38 (ten years ago) link
i wonder if a team w cap space would be allowed to sign booz then trade him and his new low salary to a contender and extract a draft pick or w/e in the process
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 06:38 (ten years ago) link
haha that would be cold as hell

Y'all are fucking nuts. This is a fantastic move by the Cavs. Luol Deng is really good, people!!
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 12:12 (ten years ago) link
Cavs trade a guy who they were going to release anyway, get two-time All-Star in return. OMG TERRIBLE!!
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 12:48 (ten years ago) link
he's underrated on ILH for sure, the problem is that it's a win-now move for a team whose best case scenario is a scrappy 5 game loss to the Heat or Pacers.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:16 (ten years ago) link
Brian Windhorst @WindhorstESPN 31m
After Andrew Bynum released, Bulls will have 12 players & be $548,798 below tax line. Must add 13th player. Pro-rated vet min: $520,172
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:21 (ten years ago) link
Only so long they can throw dice in the lottery before bringing in established talent otherwise they definitely lose Kyrie next year as opposed to probably.
― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:34 (ten years ago) link
deng is an all-star player only in the historically weak context of the eastern conference the past couple of years, and best case scenario he pushes the cavs into the playoffs where they have the honor of being murdered by the heat or pacers. he'll then either leave after this season, or be overpaid to stay and cut cleveland's chance of getting lebron back from 5% to 0%. so yes, excellent move cavs, and it only cost them 4 draft picks!
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:14 (ten years ago) link
i don't think this deal becomes truly horrible until the cavs spend $60 million signing deng. none of the picks they traded seem particularly valuable.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:16 (ten years ago) link
if they can manage to sign him at a reasonable price, like 4/45, it might actually be fine. but that seems unlikely, and trading away picks, no matter how not-great the picks are, is usually a bad idea
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:36 (ten years ago) link
the cavs should be tanking
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:41 (ten years ago) link
they shoulda drafted Giannis
― Spottie, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link
that too

never read this story until today.. was hoping I could use it as a lol stern moment but he wasnt gc of the league officially until 78, not 76

so who are the east playoff teams now
locks
miami indiana
..probably?
atlantawashingtontoronto detroit
maybe?
knicksnetsbobcatscavs
that's 10 teams. the cavs are probably better than charlotte right now. but unless the toronto decides to tank they're probably fighting for the 8th seed at best.
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:00 (ten years ago) link
hard to predict!

xpost they will (overpay deng)
i think 4 years is the wrong way to go here. 3 max
― moullet, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:27 (ten years ago) link
i think it will be interesting to see how guys that thibs has run into the ground (deng, noah) survive on whatever their next contracts are
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:31 (ten years ago) link
also i think boozer would thrive playing the 4 for miami. mid range magic, udonis insurance (i guess udonis becomes the insurance in this case)
― moullet, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:35 (ten years ago) link
Pelicans said forward Ryan Anderson has been diagnosed with a herniated disc and is out definitely
):
feel like it could've been worse still
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:36 (ten years ago) link
with the way beasley's playing i really don't think the heat need another undersized 4
they could probably use another shooter for max lineup flexibility and for nights when battier doesn't have his shot
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link
the heat need all the players who can play any basketball at all that they can get, not to mention that beas is a poor bet to keep it up
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:39 (ten years ago) link
anyway the heat are $12 million over the tax i don't even think they'd be allowed to bid on boozer
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:42 (ten years ago) link
