The Los Angeles Bulgogi Cheesesteaks

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:54 (ten years ago) link

last sammich I had in LA was so good that they should name team after it

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:54 (ten years ago) link

BTW can I just say I think "We Are One" is kind of cheap and stupid even if well-meaning, and I hate how they already had TV spots using it ready to go for last night's game

still think an NBA team should call themselves the Ballers

i'm down w/the sentiment but the execution felt less grassroots and more like a really slick ad campaign, like let's take this incident and boil it down to a three word catchphrase as quickly as possible.

We've already decided to not be cynical about this and just enjoy it

yeah the "we are one" was kind of lame as far as "statements" go, but imo just making any "statement" was enough at that point

ugh Boston Strong. That one doubly irks me. It's not fucking Dresden.

only beef with boston strong is I read that shirts were being sold under pretense that profits were donated but were not

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:04 (ten years ago) link

they were prob donated to bostonians tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:04 (ten years ago) link

good point. i am totally down with it now.

Would we otherwise expect a city to be "weak" a year after a terrorist attack at a sports event? I get that it's a trauma, but it seems like such an easy self-pat on the back for something that didn't directly impact most people in the city. Three deaths and 140 injuries.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link

sry injury number was low but same idea

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link

hurting if i even meet you im going to literally beat u up then u will understand what boston strong is all about

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:08 (ten years ago) link

they shut down an entire neighborhood for the manhunt iirc

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:08 (ten years ago) link

it happened at a major public event

idontknowanythingabouttechnlolgeez (waterface), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:14 (ten years ago) link

the whole city shuts down that day

idontknowanythingabouttechnlolgeez (waterface), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:14 (ten years ago) link

you can imagine for a moment if you stop being a dick, how scared people would be. not just adults. kids, teenagers. have some compassion.

idontknowanythingabouttechnlolgeez (waterface), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:14 (ten years ago) link

lol if by "entire neighborhood" you mean "5 towns and 60% of the city of Boston"

I am pretty cynical about BOSTON STRONG seeing as I brought it up here and all but I'm at least sensible enough to leave it at "I am pretty cynical about it" partially because I know someone who had her foot blown off and it seems beyond evil to be overly cynical about her actual missing foot

chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:15 (ten years ago) link

exactly. and even seeing it all (from a distance) happen at locations where you've been is scary and justifies a confidence building campaign.

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:16 (ten years ago) link

did not mean to play things down with "entire neighborhood". I wasn't there, and I just remember how surreal everything that took place in the final neighborhood also was.

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:18 (ten years ago) link

I live in NYC and I was cynical about a lot of the branding and sloganizing of 9/11, and I know multiple people who lost relatives. If "Boston Strong" is actually a balm to any of you then I take back what I said.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:18 (ten years ago) link

xp "play things down" = "downplay things"?, i don't know

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:19 (ten years ago) link

oh you live in NYC, that explains it

idontknowanythingabouttechnlolgeez (waterface), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:19 (ten years ago) link

i dont really care i was just making fun of the ponderousness of your argument fwiw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:21 (ten years ago) link

i mean obvs #bostonstrong is dumb but w/e it was a terrible traumatic event

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:22 (ten years ago) link

I kind of don't feel like I deserve a "strong" badge because I got scared on the subway a couple times and survived.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:22 (ten years ago) link

its ok no one is trying to give u a badge

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 19:23 (ten years ago) link

but no one would argue with you if you wanted one unless that person was being an insensitive dick

it's perfectly understandable for a community to rally together when it is PHYSICALLY attacked, and to affirm that it is too strong to be made to cower in fear by its past or future attackers. it's one of the few times most American urbanites are able to tap into a sense of community and togetherness, I'm for it even if I kinda roll my eyes at some of it.

why didn't sterling stage a counter-demonstration outside the staples center last night, flanked by an entourage of angry supporters? it could have been like when the NWO showed-up in new york, to heckle the WWE outside a filming of raw. donald t. sterling needs to start thinking big.
