my god, it's full of straws! (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 June 2009 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry dude! i just don't buy the idea that the lakers are a loving cohesive team celebrating together after a slogging through war together - most everything that kobe says to me rings hollow. i'm sure they are all proud of each other and happy for each other and stuff but i just rolled my damn eyes at the celebration is all. not taking anything away from their winning it or something just that i don't buy them \(o_O)/

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 June 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago) link

but kobe was SCOWLING ALL PLAYOFFS as stuart scott so helpfully pointed out 15 times tonight, so what do i know

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 June 2009 06:03 (fifteen years ago) link

surely thinking kobe is a huge phony is not an unusual opinion at this point in time

i dunno man here's to doing it wrong or something this isnot a night for arguing

i wonder if the celebration would have had more oomph had their Finals opponent been the cavs or celtics (in a non-injured kg universe that is). the cavs b/c it would have looked like kobe outdoing lebron, and the c's b/c it would have meant beating the champions, and wreaking revenge on a team that embarrassed them last year. the lakers deserved this win, they were the best team in these playoffs no doubt, but there's ways in which this victory might have tasted sweeter.

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 15 June 2009 06:52 (fifteen years ago) link

after all part of the thrill of last year's championship for the c's was that they had to go through lebron and the arch-rival lakers

there were a couple other reasons too...

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 15 June 2009 06:56 (fifteen years ago) link

pfft your team would have got handled. it would be more likely a hard 6 games

simple fact that it was an away game takes any celebration down a notch

congrats adam morrison

The 2000 lakers riot makes this shit look like romper room.

Ha,yeah! I remember walking out of staples after that game and it was crazy!they were showing the game on the jumbotron outside to a few million people.

carne asada, Monday, 15 June 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

pfft your team would have got handled.

i don't completely disagree with this, esp. if you're referring to the actual, kg-less version of the celtics. even with a healthy kg and powe, i didn't see the c's beating this year's lakers (would have been a gnarly series though). but to me that's kind of beside the point. all i'm saying is that regardless of the fact that neither the c's nor the cavs turned out to be a playoff threat to the lakers, the fact is that the presence of at least one of these teams in the finals would have made the win more satisfying to LA. that's all.

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 15 June 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

just for the sake of the way this board would have been blowing up if the lakerss played the c's. i can agree with that.

carne asada, Monday, 15 June 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

it's all been downhill since bos/chi imo

^yeah but that's like top 5 sports series i've ever seen tho, tough act to follow

my god, it's full of straws! (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 June 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

also feels like a century ago. so long ago one could wax nostalgic. "yeah, and remember when that kid rondo pretended he was a fishing lure dangling from that big white dude's mouth? whatta series!!"

in lieu of revenge ^ this is my point and i'm sticking to it :)
yeah obv. before the injury we wanted the c's then the cavs distant 2nd, then i would have still wanted the kgless c's if they were good enough to have scraped through to the finals but i thought orl made an ok plucky upstart foil, better than any of the early 00's ecc's anyway. got some close games out of it but people might just remember 4-1 and the bookend games, its all good

~'-.,,.-'~'-. .-'~'-.,,.-'~ (tremendoid), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 01:47 (fourteen years ago) link

so frustrating, cuz it could just has easily have been 3-1 orlando but for an awesome inbound pass play that didn't finish and a total meltdown in the last 30 seconds of game three
could shoulda woulda

What the hell am I supposed to do with no basketball, no hockey, no Lost, and with the Padres out of contention in June?

Maybe I should take up knitting.

Did they bring him out to make the Maloofs feel better about themselves as overmatched legacy kids? Has he ever been discreetly stared at by a bunch of country club workers and had one of them say, "Fifty bucks says the Buss kid picks his nose."

so because phil isn't fired up with rage/veins bulging out of his forehead he is "above it all"? pathetic. and what's with bitching about the parade? i hate parades in general, but shit like this:

How many people give it their all every day in their jobs, every year until retirement, 30, 40 and 50 years, with no chance of a parade -- as determined as Kobe, as focused as Kobe, as accomplished as Phil?

wtf does this have to do with the lakers specifically? i'd expect that from someone who doesn't watch sports, but not this guy

ok, sb away

guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I don’t really care if the laker players all hate each other,if they are all fake and they don’t celebrate like people think they were supposed to. maybe cedric ceballos, eddie jones and elden Campbell all loved each other but they sucked and I still watched all their games. So fuck simmons and any other hack trying to take anything away from the lakers the world champion LAKERS!!!

carne asada, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 20:56 (fourteen years ago) link

After the incredibly over-the-top celebration by the Celtics, almost anything would seem low-key by comparison.

I remember when the Lakers won their third of the Shaq era. They barely celebrated at all. By that standard, this was a fucking jubilee.

look here's the thing about why the nba is horrid

every year when the playoffs begin i am like FUCK YEAH THIS OWNS SO HARD I LOVE BBALL THIS IS SO GLORIOUS ;_; and by the end of the postseason the spurs or the lakers have won again and it's basically like the ending of chinatown when john houston gets to rape his lil incestbaby granddaughter and jack nicholson cant do shit about it, it's awful. the only finals of the last decade that didn't infuriate me (ok i was neutral re: heat-mavs) were last year's and whenever the pistons sonned LA

It sucks that the Lakers won. In the past 10 years, aside from the Lakers and Spurs, only the Celtics, Heat and Pistons won the championship (one year apiece).

why nba sux

am0n, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree that the biggest problem with the NBA is that if you build a dominant team (or in the Lakers/Celtics cases manage to steal enough players to build a dominant team) that it takes a lot of the drama out of the thing. But that's not really Stern's fault. Other than the 70s that's basically the way the NBA has been since its inception.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Dynasties can be cool, so long as the dynasty is a team I like.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:08 (fourteen years ago) link

The second biggest problem with the NBA is that Lakers/Celtics have won so damn much. I totally sympathize with anyone hating both these teams.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

carne asada, (xxxposts) i'm with you on the inanity of celebration-self-righteousness, but dunno about your simmons comment. i mean, if the guy was trying to take away from the lakers, he failed epically: in the course of his article he anoints kobe as an NBA god (what he accomplished in the past 20 months ranks up there with anything that ever happened in the nba), calls gasol the second-best center, fisher "a terrific leader and character guy", and jackson the greatest coach ever. his main beef is with certain prevalent media narratives about WHY kobe and the lakers won (unselfishness, learned to love one another, etc...).

now the simers piece on the other hand, is total hater hack job.

collardio gelatinous, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, you mean last year when the team with the most titles in NBA history won again? That was a refreshing change from the norm.

I bet you will enjoy it when the Yankees win again this year you SON OF A BITCH. ;-)
