people are twitter defending Shaq like "That's what [Kobe/Jordan] was like he's just challenging them to be better!" as if there's not a difference between being the best player on a championship level team getting at teammates in practice vs. a big bloated old timer talking shit on a TV show
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 January 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link
it’s fun to have it on after a good game, the appeal is not really in basketball analysis altho they do sometimes say interesting things about basketball or the NBA as a culture
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 January 2021 16:45 (three years ago) link
shaq is straight up a dullard with nothing to say tho
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link
the subtext of the show often feels like "maybe tonight is the night shaq will crack chuck's skull"
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 January 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link
shaq also fucked around for a good portion of his career and has no credibility to challenge anyone to be better or whatever he was trying to do
― call all destroyer, Friday, 22 January 2021 16:48 (three years ago) link
shaq literally never tried to get in shape his whole career lol

somebody should start a twitter where they arbitrarily break down what percentage of every current and historical player's success should be attributed to genetic lottery vs teammates vs drive vs coaching

Sometimes I come across this narrative about Shaq that he is some brilliant cagey businessman, renaissance man even, and evidence to the contrary is him crafting his persona and playing the public. The people proposing this have clearly never watched Inside, or watched it infrequently enough to think it's really just an act.
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 22 January 2021 17:20 (three years ago) link
In fact as I type that it reminds me of a certain recently departed president. I think the real unifying thread of Shaq's career off the court is attn/media whore.
also I was just perusing his wikipedia page and he's had more controversies than I remember, including some overtly racist comments when Yao Ming entered the league, that he wrote off as, wait for it, "locker room humor"!
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 22 January 2021 17:25 (three years ago) link

Shaq is a bully. No one likes him. He’s used endorsements to raise his Q-rating but the guy who is on tv is just an ignorant jerk, no different from the guy who said “Ching Chong yah wah ah so” when asked about a young guy named Yao Ming

― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 22 January 2021 18:36 (three years ago) link
chuck is just exhausting and often barely knows the makeup of the teams that he's talking about
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 January 2021 19:09 (three years ago) link

― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 22 January 2021 19:12 (three years ago) link
the whole charm of inside the NBA is that chuck doesn't really know what he's talking about.... they've done a segment for 10 years called "who he play for" where the entire joke is that chuck doesn't know what team random guys are on. it's not a show about analysis, that's kinda missing the point
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 January 2021 19:21 (three years ago) link
any television show that is capable of this deserves to be on air in perpetuity imo

― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 January 2021 19:31 (three years ago) link
sometimes it is really fun. its just waaaaaaay less so once shaq joined. i liked it when they balanced chuck/kenny with a shuffling cast of recently retired or even current nba player who would ie bosh, webber, baron davis, draymond, etc. i think they need SOMEONE who appreciates the modern game and can speak to it and balance out chucks ignorance.
― a nice controlled drift (Spottie), Friday, 22 January 2021 19:32 (three years ago) link
Otm. I remember Webber being great in that role
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 22 January 2021 19:56 (three years ago) link
the idea of a "smart" sports analysis show has basically never existed in the entire history of television, inside the NBA is a late night comedy show that exists as entertainment first and foremost and non-coincidentally is the best sports analysis show that has ever existed. for people who "understand the modern game" i suggest podcasts

i mean its one thing to be charmingly out of touch as a schtick its another to give weird lectures to players in post game interviews
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2021 20:20 (three years ago) link
inside the NBA is a late night comedy show
so could someone please tell shaq to be funnier? he's amuses himself, but that's not how to be funny.
― Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Friday, 22 January 2021 20:20 (three years ago) link
and i mean strange postering aside shaq is just a lame unfunny try hard, and chuck has gone from not caring as a schtick to very obviously not just not caring but having open distain for the show, theyre still occasionally amusing like when they sent up whoever that was extremely flat post game interview the other day, but basically we're just dealing w tedious rich guys who spend their days on the golf course at this point, except kenny kennys still cool
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2021 20:24 (three years ago) link
the way they think about the game on the court is pretty antiquated but i also think when it comes to topics of the nba as a culture, interpersonal relationships between teammates, expectations of star players w/in franchises etc i still value their opinions and enjoy listening to the discussions. they had good debates about harden's behavior in houston, i wanted to hear their take on the kevin porter jr situation over the type of NBA commentators who "understand the modern game" ... they have equity in those discussions and a chemistry as a group that supersedes anything else in basketball discourse, imo
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 January 2021 20:29 (three years ago) link

wait, I thought you said it was a comedy show?
― Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Friday, 22 January 2021 20:31 (three years ago) link
kenny walking off the show feels like the most meaningful nba culture thing that's happened on there in the past year; shaq and chuck not joining in solidarity said a lot imo.

the show contains multitudes, where have you been the last 15 years?
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 January 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link
i dont even care if they understand the modern game whatever that means, just not constantly shitting on it would be good, maybe even take some slight joy in the insane skill of the players idk, and stop the pining for the old days its just so lame, chuck is still saying a jump shooting team cant win a title after the dubs rammed 3 down his throat ffs lol
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link

― Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Friday, 22 January 2021 20:36 (three years ago) link
shaq and chuck not walking off w kenny was one thing but then when they started taking weird passive aggressive shots at the players for protesting was when i was like these are just plain old after noon drunk rich guys
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link
all this complaining about inside the NBA when we all sit thru 3 hour broadcasts of marv albert and c webb displaying negative amounts of chemistry and reggie miller just in general. if i was going to change anything w/ TNT it would be the actual game broadcasts, ESPN kicks their ass from that perspective. but i still love having inside the NBA on after a game, it's almost always fun

shaq is literally a cop... like literally. ernie johnson gave an impassioned plea for ppl to have civility in the trump era and revealed he wrote in john kasich for president. chuck says stupid borderline fireable shit all the time. it's still the best postgame sports show on TV by a million miles. like, there isn't even anything else in the discussion.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 January 2021 20:44 (three years ago) link
its a low bar, thats the thing, it was great then they added shaq, now what do we have, paul pierce saying he could still beat bron in one on one, theyve abandoned us to a barren ladscape
