Waiting game with CollinsBy Sam AmickAugust 3, 2021 at 3:38 pmIt appears we have a John Collins waiting game unfolding in Atlanta. As has been reported elsewhere, the Hawks have a very healthy offer out to their restricted free agent that has yet to be accepted. Per sources with knowledge of the situation, it’s for five years and $125 million. So, why hasn’t Collins agreed to re-sign yet? Because as was the case last offseason, when he turned down a $90 million extension and wasn’t shy about the fact that he saw himself as a maximum salary player, he clearly sees his value differently than the Hawks. Again.Color me confused. This deal, if accepted, would not only be substantially more than what he was offered previously but would be the biggest yet on the 2021 free-agency market from a lump sum standpoint (Chris Paul’s $120 million deal with Phoenix would be second). In terms of average annual salary, the $25 million figure would be the third-highest (behind Paul’s $30 million and Kyle Lowry’s $30 million with Miami; Utah’s Mike Conley would be right behind Collins at $24.1 million). That’s some big-time cheddar for a player who averaged 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in the regular season, 13.8 points and 9.5 rebounds in the playoffs and -- to his credit -- was a pivotal piece of the team that shocked us all by getting to the East finals. It’s nowhere near the max deal that Trae Young finalized on Monday night, or that Collins himself could receive, but it’s still very substantial. What’s more, it remains to be seen where he might be able to get an offer sheet that’s any bigger. According to our in-house capologist, Danny Leroux, only Oklahoma City and San Antonio still have more than $20 million available in cap space. There also are no indications that either team is planning to add Collins. The Hawks, sources say, want to keep Collins and aren’t interested in sign-and-trade options at this time.So ... we wait.

OKC should offer him 4/80 and see if he accepts it for Galaxy brain reasons
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 3 August 2021 23:05 (three years ago) link
5/125 is probably about right?
― pure rim rest (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 August 2021 23:05 (three years ago) link
spurs used up their cap space trading derozan, so its literally just okc now

apparently drummond signed with the 76ers one year vet minimum.
hasnt embiid made a habit of flaming him every chance he gets?

thats correct lol
― class project pat (m bison), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 00:38 (three years ago) link
drummond signing for the vet minimum, javale riding the bench for team USA, everyone trying to figure out how the nets might be able to dump deandre... a lukewarm summer for the matt armstrong all stars. alex len got a 2/7.5 deal from the kings tho so we'll put that in the W column

they need a backup without favours around. i guess they dumped favours to sign gay and will pick up whiteside on the cheap
― micah, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 02:39 (three years ago) link
jazz should probably have tried to get a stretch 4/5 like a patrick patterson type
― micah, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 02:40 (three years ago) link
they also drafted a center in the first round last year who to my knowledge has basically never played

oladipo to the heat for one year on the minimum. apparently his ppl think he could be back by jan/february, the heat seem to think it will be more like march. in any event the primary motivation of the deal appears to be so that the heat keep his bird rights & can exceed the cap to re-sign him next season if they want to
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 August 2021 23:32 (three years ago) link
pretty great for the hawks that trae didn’t ask for a player option on his extension

lol yeah. i mean it does make the bulls better in terms of shot creation/playmaking, and they have enough 3-point shooting around him to make that work. but its A LOT of money. that d is gonna be badddd

here is the spurs offseson so far:*demar trade was pretty darn good for SA (picks and if they keep thad, he'll be a nice complement to their team)*the primo pick is a mess until proven otherwise*signing zach collins for 3 years just seems like such a huge unforced error*not the hugest fan of mcbuckets but i get it. its just a lot to pay a backup, but he'll have solid trade value.*re-signing bryn...spurs have six guards who can't play SF under contract, though i suppose primo and tre jones can go to austin full time.*getting chandler hutchison and a 2RP for nothing, seems fine.*they have 17 guys under contract rn, someone's getting traded or cut
― class project pat (m bison), Thursday, 5 August 2021 00:48 (three years ago) link
I think the Spurs moves are fine, Primo was a bold, gutsy pick from a franchise that has earned the right to do that sometimes. They have a lot of great young talent, more than people are admitting most of the time imo
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 5 August 2021 01:31 (three years ago) link
They’re also a very experienced front office who probably had a good idea that primo wasn’t lasting to 20.

Cam Johnson made draft reaches look good
― symsymsym, Thursday, 5 August 2021 01:34 (three years ago) link
in that part of the draft reaches are pretty excusable. giannis was a dice roll too! chances are better than not that even a “safe” or “good” pick in the mid to late lottery is not gonna be all that great
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 August 2021 03:38 (three years ago) link
yeah totally. nobody drafted after primo is anywhere close to a sure thing
― symsymsym, Thursday, 5 August 2021 04:27 (three years ago) link
Danny Green back to Sixers at 2 years/$20M. Seems like too much. He is not a starter at this point and he also looked washed during stretches.

xxpost re: primo, it wasnt that anyone guy was preferable (altho my preference on swing-for-the-fences picks are big wings bc guards are not as impactful on winning unless they are transcendently good). i just felt that knicks offering 19+21 gives you better odds to find a big player.
