interesting piece on the scoring decline, fouls are down one a game which isnt that much but its causing the game to slow down too since possessions with fouls are shorter than those without, and all possessions are slowing down since defenses can now play harder due to the looser officiating, thats the theory

also ~12% of the ft decline is due to trae and embiid being out lol

lag∞n, Saturday, 23 March 2024 16:00 (three months ago) link

yeah that was a good read, conclusion it’s like 10-15% less free throws, 10-15% a small handful of outliers being out, and the rest is the downstream slower pace effects of there being less free throws

brony james (k3vin k.), Saturday, 23 March 2024 16:15 (three months ago) link

celitcs now first in 3pt% 39.1 and 3pt rate 47.3, thats crazy

lag∞n, Monday, 25 March 2024 12:46 (three months ago) link

closest any teams come to doing that over a full season in the last ten years was 2016 warriors who were first in % 41.6 and second to houston 37 in rate at 36.2, houston was 19th in percetage at 34.7

lag∞n, Monday, 25 March 2024 13:06 (three months ago) link

celtics haved done it without great shooters, at least not in the starting lineup, theyve done it with a lot of good shooters who are also good basketball players, which allows them to generate great looks, of their top eight guys in 3pt attempts six are outperforming their career percentage and the other two jaylen and pritchard are less than a point off, also theyve shot way better as the season has progressed, which is prob because theyve figured out how to play with the new guys, so they might be better at shooting 3s than the season numbers suggest, also prob as something to do with that theyve been resting starters recently which give hauser more minutes, and he is bombs away folks let me tell you

passing the torch

Only 2 players have made more than 20 threes over a 3-game span this season:

last year celtics were 6th in 3pt% 37.7 and second in rate 48 which is good but not as good as being first in both haha

Net free-throw attempts since the start of last season (including the playoffs)...

lag∞n, Monday, 25 March 2024 16:36 (three months ago) link

+700 seems like a lot until you total up the number of games including playoffs across two seasons and divide by that number. my stance on this ongoing “controversy” is that it’s not very surprising that a team employing lebron and AD dominates its opponents in the foul department

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2024 16:39 (three months ago) link

i challenge you to find another stat that has a similar distribution

lag∞n, Monday, 25 March 2024 16:41 (three months ago) link

you can divide it by whatever you want lol

i’m finding it hard to square with the drives and paint touch rankings…

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 25 March 2024 16:48 (three months ago) link

i will not be accepting that challenge. but the lakers being roughly +4 FTs per game while the next best team is roughly +2 FTs per game amounts to, functionally, one extra whistle per game, which feels like a minor variable all things considered

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2024 16:52 (three months ago) link

another way to express that is its double

― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, March 25, 2024 12:48 PM (three minutes ago)

try squaring it w/ the fact that lebron james is third all time in NBA history in free throw attempts and 147th all time in fouls committed

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2024 16:54 (three months ago) link

this is a lebron career stats stat now

lag∞n, Monday, 25 March 2024 16:56 (three months ago) link

its no surprise for LeBron to have the friendliest whistle of all time, he's been the face of the league for 20 years. would be interesting to see how their FT rate looks if you factor him and AD out of the equation somehow. therein would lie the LAL bias

its clearly cooked and i dont think its a matter for debate

micah, Monday, 25 March 2024 23:21 (three months ago) link

the thing is that the disparity is bcuz of lack of foul calls on the lakers not foul calls in favor of the lakers, which is typically not how these kinda conspiracies go. but maybe they're trying a twist on the old formula

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 March 2024 23:26 (three months ago) link

its both, this year theyre first (lowest) in fouls committed and third in fts taken, last year they were first in both

when i looked at bball ref earlier i saw them in fifth but looking more closely the sixers, suns and lakers are basically tied for third in the league at 24.1 or 24.2 or 24.3 FTA per game depending on your source. bball ref has total FTAs on the season as

1. magic - 1,751
2. bucks - 1,748
3. sixers - 1,718
4. suns - 1,712
5. lakers - 1,711

all have played 71 games

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 00:16 (three months ago) link

if you go by fewest amount of opponent free throws total you get

1. celtics - 1,268
2. lakers - 1,291

so in reality the lakers don't even lead the league in fewest amount of FTAs given up

conclusion: the lakers free throw disparity gap over the league really just boils down to the celtics being bottom 10 in the league in FT rate while also being last in the league in opponent FT rate lol

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 00:21 (three months ago) link

the celtics dont foul its their plan thats why they dont get any steals

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 00:22 (three months ago) link

the conspiracy we really need to be talking about is the one that explains why jaylen brown is taking 4.5 FTA per game

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 00:23 (three months ago) link

jrue holiday total foul shots in the last 3 seasons:

22-23: 177
23-24: 72

really nicely illustrates how the lakers have built that free throw gap on the defensive end. just good smart defense without fouling
