weird to think thats his first trip dub as a Clipper

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

not that weird, he only averages like 4-5 boards per game

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 17:30 (nine years ago) link

its a lot of guys averaging 4-b boards that have had more these past few years and most of those guys don't average 10 assists per game.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

Plus it ain't as if the Clippers are particularly good at rebounding as a team

@ESPNStatsInfo: James Harden's efficiency: His 18 field goals in last 3 games are the fewest in NBA history for a player scoring 85+ points in a 3-game span

I don't think the league started keeping track of blocks until the 70s or 80s or something, wilt probably had 10000 blocks his first season

brimstead, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:25 (nine years ago) link

the other problem the suns' had with that pick is that they're obv trying to win now and it's hard to do that while also bringing along a top but raw prospect

this is why the cavs traded wiggins and it's why it makes no sense for the knicks to go out and sign greg monroe and rajon rondo or whatever

but they shuold've cashed that pick in for someone better than brandon knight because the top 5 prospects in this draft are very good

if this is their mindset they're morons. A team built around Kieff, Bledsoe and Alex Len isn't exactly a team whose window is closing.

If the Spurs lucked into a top 5 pick they'd just pick a great player and move on.

what will become of lance I wonder

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:17 (nine years ago) link

hopefully he'll grow up a little and be a great rotation guy on a good team

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

he can only go up from here right?

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:38 (nine years ago) link

seems like he'll always be a curiosity idk

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link

i still think lance can be good

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:18 (nine years ago) link

lance has played on uniformly awful offenses for his entire career, like bottom fourth of the nba bad. you can't completely eliminate his role in that i guess but he has a unique skillset and it would be interesting to see him play on a team that has established competence on that end.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:22 (nine years ago) link

but he also seems like a total headcase so maybe it's a supercool beasley situation with essentially one half-season of pretty good ball

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:25 (nine years ago) link

Mike. D'Antoni.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:47 (nine years ago) link

as in, he should coach lance on a team? or wut

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:51 (nine years ago) link

lance just needs to go on a vision quest, learn abt himself

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

The Hornets are so weird. They don't do many aggressively terrible things but it never quite works out.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:30 (nine years ago) link

seems like none of their dudes have a good year at the same time. Big AL was pretty bad this year but Kemba stepped up then Al kiiiiinda got it going and Kemba got hurt.

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:33 (nine years ago) link

Kidd Gilchrist and Biyombo are actually pretty awesome Defensive Role Players

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:34 (nine years ago) link

I guess the logic of the Lance deal was mayyyyybe he could be a superstar and then all of a sudden it's a team with a bunch of nice role players and complementary guys

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:35 (nine years ago) link

theyre too goddamned slow, which can mess with other teams' style to a certain extent (and it did! they were rolling for a little bit). but the second that got figured out they were toast and they didnt try anything different

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:36 (nine years ago) link

haha xxxp yeah MKG is cool, gerald henderson was good at times this year too

goldsberry charts & data on korver http://grantland.com/the-triangle/nba-kyle-korver-best-shooter-nba-atlanta-hawks/

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:04 (nine years ago) link

By the end of the regular season, Korver had accumulated 182 points more than an “average” shooter would have from his exact same shooting opportunities. Once you account for volume, it’s clear that Korver had the most efficient scoring season in the league by a wide margin.

Points Above Average Shooter per 100 Shots (minimum 500 attempts):

1. Kyle Korver, plus-30.2
2. DeAndre Jordan, plus-17.4
3. J.J. Redick, plus-17.2
4. Stephen Curry, plus-17.0
5. Brandan Wright, plus-16.6

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:05 (nine years ago) link

most predictable list ever of the worst:

1. Lance Stephenson, minus-20.0
2. Michael Carter-Williams, minus-19.4
3. Elfrid Payton, minus-18.1
4. Solomon Hill, minus-17.3
5. Dion Waiters, minus-17.3

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:06 (nine years ago) link

goldsberry i love yr charts but u r dummmmb wow

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:10 (nine years ago) link

well yea we are never posting these things for the words obviously

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:12 (nine years ago) link

its just kinda shocking how bad he is at thinking about what the stats mean

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:13 (nine years ago) link

elaborate (i think i might agree w/ you but am curious)

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:17 (nine years ago) link

well measuring shooters league wide based on korvers constellation of shots is silly, those shots are the ones korver is good at! thats why he takes them! its like saying kyle korver is the best at being kyle korver, btw is it even clear from the article what hes talking about, does he just casually slide from the constellation data set to a general points per shot metric i cant tell

and then like just generally maybe some of the stuff hes saying is true but its just not very informative, he cldve dug deeper and like compared currys catch and shoot percentage to korvers, their % on open shots etc, but instead hes just all this guy is very efficient! cool i guess, its decontextualized to the point of just being a factoid

also the headline straight up says korver is the best shooter

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:30 (nine years ago) link

many of his pieces r even worse than this one conceptually tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:32 (nine years ago) link

there's a part in that article about how korver is the best shooter where he brings up a data point that implies the next best shooter is deandre jordan which either makes you question either what kinda data we're looking at or if the author is paying attention to how he's making his points

Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:37 (nine years ago) link

like you can like math and all but you have to be able to critically assess your math to really have a viewpoint that isn't "wow I like math check it out"

Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

his articles kinda come of as him looking at one of his pretty charts and going oh and this part and this part and this part and then realizing that he shd somehow try to string those thoughts into an argument by saying efficiency

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:41 (nine years ago) link

also like he says efficiency but theres clearly some sort unmentioned floor as far as number of shots taken to qualify for the list of best shooters

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link

yea there's no nuance to it, like no control put out there against his hypothesis (the league average as a whole is too wide a swath of data to really serve as such). the easiest one would be as you said, someone like curry, who's often creating threes right away for himself off the dribble

title is prob the result of an editor tryna get optimal SEO juice outta that shit

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:44 (nine years ago) link

also lol just checked and this does not include FTs! how convienent for kyle korver who only attempts 1.6 a game

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

and those are from technical fouls

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:47 (nine years ago) link

like i fully believe in sports stats and their proper implementation, etc. etc. but the literalism can be baffling, like for example you would much rather have marc gasol on yr team as center than deandre - even though deandre's FG% (like his number in this somewhat arbitrary metric) is higher - because whether gasol's percentage is lower or not he's inherently a more diverse shooter & offensive player

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah its a def forest for the trees type of situ, stats for stats sake

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:49 (nine years ago) link

turns out efficiency on an individual player level is a p quicksilver concept

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:50 (nine years ago) link

lol yeah i've been griping about goldsberry for a while. occasionally he'll come out with something worthwhile tho
