I think my take is ultimately that Timmy mostly was a pf from rookie year through about the mid-2000s while they had a center next to him and center from then until now. However when he was a 4 he was a particularly basket-oriented 4, basically the opposite of a stretch 4, and iirc even in that era played a lot of straight up center when rasho/oberto/whoever hit the bench or the match ups dictated. Whereas in his center era even when he has briefly technically played 4 it's really been a double center lineup.

So if I have to pick really he's a center, fairly inherently, and the shift in the game away from deadwood lumbering centers and toward basket-facing stretch 4s during his career cements it

yeah i was tempted to quote jalen ranting about positions being a construct that helps the casual fan follow the game (don't really believe this). always thought of him as a center, even when robinson was there i thought of it as a twin towers situation. seems like alot of the pf argument is rooted in being able to argue he's the greatest pf of all time cuz otherwise that's like karl malone and nobody wants that. voted c.
