feel like grantland crew got it right m/l

not sure about COY tho. pop deserves it but will the league give it to him again or go for a fresh face idk

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

i think kerr's a lock for coy. gsw gonna grab mvp, dpoy, & coy, nice haul.

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 22:54 (nine years ago) link

or none of them who knows

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

has any coach ever won COTY their first year?

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:07 (nine years ago) link

i am trying to google to answer yr question and it is really hard to find

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link

on phone/zing so could be reading wiki wrong but seems like there hasn't been. and if Kerr got it there wouldn't be many arguments against it, which is awesome.

first google news result when I search "NBA coach of the year" is a USA today piece that sez brad stevens should be coach of the year tho

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

it looks like avery johnson did w/ the mavs in 05-06 actually xp

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Looks like the first ever COTY is your answer.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:15 (nine years ago) link

also rick carlisle in 01-02 w/ the pistons, though both had been assistants for years before taking the helm

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

doc rivers won his first year

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

Harry Gallatin won his first year, and won the first ever COTY.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:17 (nine years ago) link

larry legend won his first year too, so i guess it's not really uncommon at all.

Clay, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:19 (nine years ago) link

@MrMichaelLee
LeBron James on his choice for MVP: "Kevin Love."

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:26 (nine years ago) link

dang, I figured if it was anyone it would've been riles but he didn't till 1990.

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:28 (nine years ago) link

yeah first year coaches winning coty isn't that surprising considering the formula is generally 'this team was better than we thought they would be' and an upgrade in coach in coach is the easiest way to quickly improve a team and a first year guy is gonna be the least known quantity = surprising success.

balls, Thursday, 16 April 2015 04:05 (nine years ago) link

DPOY: Gobert
ROY: Wiggins
MVP: Curry
COY: Kidd

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:11 (nine years ago) link

MIP: Whiteside, obviously.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:14 (nine years ago) link

Whiteside's season deserves more hype imo

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:14 (nine years ago) link

yeah very cool story.

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:22 (nine years ago) link

DPOY: Gobert
ROY: Wiggins
MVP: Curry
COY: Kidd

#gobertthirst so real damn

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:29 (nine years ago) link

idk defensively you should maybe scare people places aside from the rim and 3 feet outside of it to be defensively well rounded so that kinda screws gobert, wingspan be damned

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:31 (nine years ago) link

Mutombo won DPOY 4 times

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:37 (nine years ago) link

I guess people didn't care about well roundedness back then

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:37 (nine years ago) link

It's weird how when the Jazz put Gobert in the starting lineup they instantly became an elite defensive team despite that lack of rounding

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:38 (nine years ago) link

lol that was a complete bait post & it still worked, obv gobert is pretty good I just think he's a bit overrated & also the jazz are enough of a slog to watch to qualify as bergman outtakes somehow transformed into sport

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:43 (nine years ago) link

idk id rather a glorious crazy person like draymond or a transformative talent like kawhi or even timmy for what he maintains at his age get it than a curio big man with obvious limitations mostly notable for being fawned over by people who think the big man era is still a thing

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:48 (nine years ago) link

the best team in the league starts bogut

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:51 (nine years ago) link

who is also a good DPOY pick (much better than Draymond who is actually overrated unlike Gobert)

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:51 (nine years ago) link

I like bogut! he'd be fine as well as a traditional v creative big man defender

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:52 (nine years ago) link

fine for that award I mean obviously he's great regardless of such criteria

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:53 (nine years ago) link

but the big men era is over, might want to rethink your position

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:55 (nine years ago) link

yr literalism is cute & I'm sure it was pretty clear what I meant but good try tho

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:56 (nine years ago) link

you said the best rim protector in the league is mostly notable for being liked by people online

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:56 (nine years ago) link

Zach Lowe has Gobert fourth in his DPOY rankings, does that put him in the cult

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 05:58 (nine years ago) link

well to take literalism to a sadistic extreme...the notice of his defensive stats is largely online aside from the errant block or dunk making its way into mainstream highlight reels

which fwiw is fine, it's mostly amusing that the hint of a slight on gobert had such a predictable result

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:00 (nine years ago) link

shotblocking defensive specialist centers don't make highlight reels, it's true, they win DPOY a lot tho

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:07 (nine years ago) link

being well rounded ain't all that. Shaq wasn't well rounded on offense or defense and he was pretty good.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:09 (nine years ago) link

you asked me to support an initial point (gobert's attention mostly being internet hoops lovers like us) and I did, I then added a qualifier saying that such a thing was not inherently bad by any means, I just am not as impressed by his shit as many seem to be & you are either deliberately ignoring that or trolling

then again that's exactly how he convo between you and lagoon over thabo went so what was I expecting

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:14 (nine years ago) link

no you said he was mostly notable for having some online fans, but in reality he's mostly notable for being the league's top shotblocker. like for example if you were to google him, that's the info that would come up, not "Gobert a big deal with nerds"

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:18 (nine years ago) link

otoh I was at least half trolling when I went on this anti-gobert tear (or more accurately A Tear On Gobert That Is Not Completely Laudatory And Mildly Critical and that is prob the same thing for you matt) so it serves me right I suppose

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:18 (nine years ago) link

lol it's more than mildly critical

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:20 (nine years ago) link

"curio big man with obvious limitations mostly notable for being fawned over by people who think the big man era is still a thing"

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:20 (nine years ago) link

gobert will win multiple dpoy awards imo

Clay, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:22 (nine years ago) link

is kawhi not a likely candidate for dpoy?

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:23 (nine years ago) link

Missed some games

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:25 (nine years ago) link

he's a candidate but missed a lot of time and kinda played the first half of the season in a low gear xp

Clay, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:25 (nine years ago) link

when do they announce this stuff? if it's mid-playoff i could see him putting together a few games that could sway people over

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:26 (nine years ago) link

nah all this shit is voted on already

balls, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:27 (nine years ago) link

votes due tomorrow I think xp

Clay, Thursday, 16 April 2015 06:28 (nine years ago) link

Yeah firing Jax and not trading for love were two pretty tough choices

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Friday, 1 May 2015 22:20 (eight years ago) link

curry got that mvp

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link

the hoops gods have smiled upon us this day

slothroprhymes, Monday, 4 May 2015 00:30 (eight years ago) link

!!!!

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Monday, 4 May 2015 01:24 (eight years ago) link

More glad that Harden didn't win tbh, I don't want to hate that dude as much as I do

tsrobodo, Monday, 4 May 2015 01:26 (eight years ago) link

he's #2 surely, interested in seeing the totals as curry mvp seemed a sure thing by the end of the season

balls, Monday, 4 May 2015 01:50 (eight years ago) link

I'd guess it's near-unanimous curry as no 1 outside of local guys voting for harden and wb and lebron. That run curry had sit the end of the season was impossible to ignore.

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2015 02:00 (eight years ago) link

grats steph, cool player, amazing season

lag∞n, Monday, 4 May 2015 03:56 (eight years ago) link

Player / Team 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th TOTAL

Blake Griffin, L.A. Clippers — — — 1 — 3

Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio — — — — 1 1
Klay Thompson, Golden State — — — — 1 1

slothroprhymes, Monday, 4 May 2015 20:29 (eight years ago) link

lol how did we ever think curry vs harden would be a close race for first

slothroprhymes, Monday, 4 May 2015 20:30 (eight years ago) link

seventh place is sort of interesting since the top six seemed relatively in stone. was aldridge the best of the rest?

polyphonic, Monday, 4 May 2015 21:28 (eight years ago) link

played well through injury, so probably got some admiring the sacrifice votes, but that's 1 5th place and 3 6th place votes most of which are prob homers. I'd have voted gasol 6th personally.

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:42 (eight years ago) link

*I'm sorry those are 4th and 5th place not 5th and 6th.

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:42 (eight years ago) link

not a single first or second place vote for cp3 or brow get a brain morans

lag∞n, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:47 (eight years ago) link

17 players received votes last year, 12 this year. As contested as this race was, it was much tighter at the top than in the middle.

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:51 (eight years ago) link

FIRST TEAM ALL-DEFENSE (2015, literally)

Tony Allen
Draymond Green
DeAndre Jordan
Kawhi Leonard
Chris Paul

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 18:25 (eight years ago) link

2nd team: boaguts, brow, timmy, jimmy buckets, john wall

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

p good lists dray over brow is a joke tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

brow definitely belongs on the first team but idk if i'd cut draymond to slot him there...would honestly cut deandre instead, put him on 2nd team

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

gasol, duncan and ad should all be over dj imo

ALL-NBA TEAMS:

1ST: steph, harden, bron, brow, marc gasol
2ND: juiceman, cp3, lamarcus, pau, boogie
3RD: kyrie, klay, blake, timmy, deandre

good all-NBA squads. DAJ kind of lucked out that there are no good 2-way centers tho

horrible defense tho

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 21 May 2015 22:10 (eight years ago) link

would mostly just rather have butler on the third team than pau on the second

Clay, Thursday, 21 May 2015 22:10 (eight years ago) link

Gobert should have been above Bogut on all defense but whatever, they'll come around next year.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 21 May 2015 22:13 (eight years ago) link

they both should have been above DeAndre but he played more minutes and voters care about that

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 21 May 2015 22:13 (eight years ago) link

awards are always a lagging indicator at best

well i meant other than those guys. in 5 years we'll probably look back and see him as a pretty uninspired choice. it's just dumb that there are probably 5 more forwards who deserve this recognition before DAJ or any other center

k3vin k., Friday, 22 May 2015 11:57 (eight years ago) link

All-NBA teams were announced.
4 of the 5 players on the 1st team, and
4 of the 5 players on the 2nd team, and
4 of the 5 players on the 3rd team play in the Western Conference.
