Ron Artest: Crazy or really crazy?

I'm saying really crazy. Way to throw the team that stood by you during your 70-game suspension under the bus (said in my best Jim Rome voice).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 12 December 2005 22:35 (eighteen years ago) link

really, really crazy. he's back with a team that seemed to support him both on and off the court, they're doing well and not even 20 games in and he's on some TO-level shit. and it sounds like the pacers are really going to trade him! i'm not sure if i would- you could potentially win a championship with him, but he could also put your club out of business, who knows. can they even get something approaching equal value for him? and who the heck is gonna take him?

I might've heard that my Warriors are interested! Then again, I should probably not say anything, given my recent record at forecasting things.

If this Artest-for-Peja deal doesn't get done, I might break up with the NBA for a while.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 15 December 2005 02:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked the Artest+Croshere for Van Horn or Artest for Stackhouse deal ESPN floated. But Artest is probably just too nuts to work out anywhere.

So which Western Conference team is talking about trading an All-Star?

The Rockets only have (off the top of my head) McGrady and Yao. The Mavericks have Stackhouse and Dirk. Minnesota has KG.

Would the NBA collectively shit itself if San Antonio picked up Artest? Would they just win the next seven titles in a row until Tim Duncan got bored and retired?

I've heard Artest for Stackhouse.

i actually think artest would work out really poorly on the spurs! he would really be the only head case acc to the uni-headcase theory (i'm discounting nick the quick because he seems to be pretty mellow these days, and really the dude has NO PRESSURE AT ALL other than sucking less than benno udrih) but for some reason i think he would upset the good duncan-bowen-tony-manu balance. i think he'd fit on the court but there could be some fireworks based on PT with bowen

xpost - That's what I read, but I can't imagine it happening.

Terry, Howard, Artest, Dirk, basket of chicken fries as the starters with Daniels, Harris, Van Horn and Diop on the bench is kind of nasty, though.

What are the chances of Indiana taking Artest back? I'm guess about 5%, but it all depends on if Jermaine O'Neal says to let him come back.

And, would an Artest for Marbury trade ever happen? The salaries are totally out of whack, so Indy would have to throw in Croshere and another player, and I'm not sure that Indy would really want Marbury. But, never say never with Zeke.

No Marbury, I'd rather just keep Artest!!! Marbury is a loser and isn't really what the Pacers need. I really want to see them get Peja.

Well, after all that time, the Pacers made the trade that everyone knew they were going to make. I wonder who will take longer to adjust to their new teams, Artest or Stojakovic? Artest is out of shape, and Peja has been injured all season. And I wonder how long until Ronny goes buckwild in Sacto?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Being a Kings fan and living in Sacramento, I couldn't possibly be more excited about this trade (or the possibility of getting socked in the face by Ron Ron at a club after a home game). Bring on the crazy!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:32 (eighteen years ago) link

anyways i think the main effect of this trade is a) greater possibility of a kobe/ron fistfight and/or 75 points-per-man duel by the end of the season, and b) the trade pipeline is now open- by all accounts every gm was waiting to see where ron-ron landed.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

needless to say i am EXTREMELY sad that corey maggette's busted ass foot prevented what would have perhaps been the most brilliant acquisition in clippers history

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Uh the trade is now off. WTF?? I'm starting to think Artest never will play in the NBA again. Not at this rate, at least. I'm looking forward to the "Where's Ron Artest Now?" story on HBO Real Sports in about 10 years. What a waste.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha this is getting wacky even by Ron Artest standards.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Seriously!

So basically one of two things happens: 1) someone convinces Ron to accept the trade to Sacto or 2) he doesn't play again this season, because his trade value will be even lower than it is now and Indy won't be able to pull the trigger.

CBS13 Talkback: Peja Stojakovic Trade
Save It Email It Print It
"I am very sad to hear Peja is being traded. I know that trades happen in sports today, but it would be nice to see the Maloffs excercising some loyality and keep Peja. Perhaps Artest would have managed to fit in before all of this "come", "go", "don't go", "yes do go" happened (and totally in the public eye); but all of the push and shove has to take a toll on Peja and Artest. All said, I'd like to see Peja stay." - Ann Pohl

"The trade paves the way for the Kings to leave Sacramento. Bibby and Miller are next and then the emotional tie to the team will be gone; very astute business move. Good thing the Olympics start next month," - Dave Fulton

"What are they thinking!!! Somebody seriously wants to destroy the Kings completely. It is a shame. When are they going to trade Bibby and Miller?" - Dan Statum

"The Kings have been trying to re-establish themselves as one of the league's best all season and they have had many obstacles to overcome in the process. Even though Ron Artest is a talented athlete why would we want to bring in someone so volatile who does not have a team mind set and doesn't want to be here!? If he wants to stay in Indiana and has caused this much trouble can you imagine what he'll do to our Kings? The guy's a time bomb and sending him somewhere he doesn't want to be will be T.O. part II. Talent cannot overcome lack of character on and off the court. For a team with an identity crisis trading for Dr. Jekyll is a bad idea." - Doug Pelott

"Hedo, Christie, Vlade, Webber, Jackson...and now Peja? A sad proposition for what is becoming a pitiful team. There are not many things for Kings fans to get excited about this season, but seeing Bibby, Peja and Miller lead the newer players is our only hope. Everyone is complaining about Peja's performance while both Bibby and Miller have gone through injuries and slumps of their own. What has made the Kings great has been the way they came together as a TEAM, not individual players. We need to regain that cohesiveness, and we won't do it by trading our senior players! I have to wonder where our coach went? Addelman coaches the games as if his hands are tied behind his back and he has a sock in his mouth. He seems to have lost the passion needed to inspire our guys to win. I think it's because Petrie and the Maloofs continually undermine him with their chasing of the almighty dollar. How much will ever be enough for these people? With threats of taking our team to Vegas, trading away our favorite players and treating them with such disrespect, how can they ever expect to fill up their stadium and keep the fans in the game? I'll be a fan as long as they are here (which I don't think will be much longer at this rate), but the Maloofs get no more of my money until they show more respect for the fans!" - H. Bernard

"I think that Peja should stay in Sac. He is a great asset to the kings and I don't understand why every one is saying that the Kings stink. I think that the Kings are trying their best and thats all we can ask for. I would like to see some of the overweight drunk fans try to play against the kings. Peja's home is Sacramento and when I think of peja, I think of the kings. GO KINGS!!" - Jennifer Bryant

"Gavin Maloof, you goof, surely you jest!
Dear Sweet Peja for Ron Arrtest?
All talk of this wrongheaded swap
Must right now, immediately stop!
If you must have controversial person,
how about the talented Alan Iverson.
Or, if a nice for mean trade is destined to be...
You could could do far better with Kobe." - Jim Walker

"Peja needs to stay! I am disgusted with the unfair and unprofessional manner Peja & others were notified about the trade. So much for being the "big happy family". Peja is a credit to the Kings; let the poor guy heal and stop worrying about your millions." - Kathleen O'Brien

"I think the Kings need what Artest can give them, but the details surrounding this trade already point to how risky it could be with a volatile personality like Artest. Trading Peja makes sense, and there are a lot of teams out there with good value in return that would like to have Peja. Make it count!" - Bill Taylor

"When Peja said three summers ago he wanted to go, I was ready then. Bring in Artest or someone to help our Kings get where we need to be! Go Kings!" - DJ

"Peja needs to stay. Ron is a great player, but needs to get his priorities straight." - Scott Elder

"My choice...pack up the whole bunch and send them to Las Vegas!" - Dennis D.

"He's good, so it stinks," - Al Maynard

"Trading Peja is a terrible idea. Can we trade Geoff Petrie?" - Patty Metzger

"I never liked basketball until my daughter got my husband and I interested in the Kings, we liked the rapport of Webber, Hedo, Vlade, Christie, Jackson, Pollard. They were a team of spirit, togetherness, and we loved them win or lose, Bibby is great now but to lose Peja a member of the team and of the community leaves me with sadness as to what will become of our team if he also is sent away. I dont think I will watch them anymore, I think the Maloofs should have gotten rid of Petrie, not Adelman, not all of our players," - Diana Cavanaugh

"Why trade Peja? the starting line up from few years back is starting to fall apart. If you don't work together and trade new people the new guy might take a while to fit into the system but Peja is a very excellent b-ball player before his injury this year so just wait until he recovers and the kings will win again," - Jim Cortez

"Trading Peja for Artest is dumb. Artest does not need to be associated with the city of Sacramento. The Kings can find help in other places," - Martin Kennison

"Peja for Artest gives Sac the best of two worlds. We still have a basketball team, and, given the way Artest fights, we get a Hockey team, too," - Harry Hickman

"Peja should be gone. Back 3 days; the team lost 3 days. Artest is not the answer," - Harlan

"I used to be a Kings' enthusiast but players don't stick around long enough to meld into a championship team. It's a blame game with fingers pointing at players like Webber, Christie, Jackson, Williams and on and on and on. These players have been replaced yet the coach is still around. Adleman is the "player" that needs to be traded. Petrie can go with him since they're buddies. But buddies don't necessarily win championships. I'm taking off my Kings' license plate holder. I'm done!" - Darlene

"I really hate to see Peja traded but I would still be a Kings fan but if they ever get rid of Bibby I can assure you I would find me another team to root for - even if it had to be the Lakers!" - Opal Good

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 26 January 2006 03:47 (eighteen years ago) link

whatever, it's so good for the kings. peja was arguably the least clutch player in the nba.

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I love Peja, but I certainly won't miss his refusal to play defense, his reluctance to rebound, his tendency to completely disappear in the playoffs (or the fourth quarter of nearly every regular season game, for that matter) or his missed games for questionable injuries like pinky sprains.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm not sure i'd go x100 there hyperbonym

agreed, artest gets a bad rap and isn't quick enough to explain/defend himself most of the time

but it doesn't seem like a convincing case for bird's villainy to me

more like kneejerk contrarianism

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

plus bird is smart enough that i think if he were really trying to sabotage ron's image AND increase his trade value somehow- as bayless seems to be insinuating- he would score something a little better than peja when reportedly every coach in the league wants a crack at having artest

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm less interested in the (kneejerk) Bird-is-bad-mang part and more interested in the (true) Ron-was-right-that-he-was-being-shifted-out-of-the-offense part, and that asking for a trade was not anywhere near suspension for six weeks' worthy.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:33 (eighteen years ago) link

true, although i understand the suspension as a "last straw stop fuckin' around ron" thing, it's not much of an offense though. paul pierce floated the idea that he MIGHT ask for a trade a few weeks back, should he have been suspended for, oh, a quarter or something?

anyway ron was totally being phased out of the offense- when i saw him in person here it looked like there was a "ron zone" on the court where he was allowed to mess around, but nobody was necessarily interested in passing there or going there to run picks or what have you. it's pretty much a testament to how skilled he is that he was able to put up something like 20 points anyway.

seriously though, could you blame carlisle or bird for overreacting to anything ron did by that point though? even if i loved the kid to death i'd still want to smack him silly every time he spouted off.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, I can blame Carlisle AND Bird for overreacting to comments made in an interview by their REAL best player (witness how "effective" Jermaine O'Neal is when there's no Artest to back him up), and for screwing their own team's season out of spite. They're not his "daddy," Rob, so they don't get to "smack the kid" for spouting off. They are front office executives who have behaved shamefully to "reassure" their fans that this ain't no Portland here, we HAVE CONTROL OVER THE BAD MAN, weird especially considering the fact that Bird wasn't exactly the saint of all time, on or off the court. Plus, they've botched the whole trade thing nine different ways and Artest is still blamed for their incompetence. Even worse, the team sucks, and it won't get better.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:10 (eighteen years ago) link

you can't even expect a decent size business not to claim they own every email you write or thought you have in or near their building. i'd be fairly cranky if i was involved in the BIZ side of the pacers and walked around with an ulcer from worrying if ron was going to tick off more paying fans

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

agreed, though, they effed that team up real bad and didn't do enough to diffuse the "bad man artest" stereotype. stephen jackson doesn't strike me as a tim duncan model citizen type either, even though i kind of like how goofy he is.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm not totally sure what i'm saying here anymore, except that i understand how this year's artest saga could go down, and i would have done it totally different if i were either ron or a pacers exec; and that i'm pretty annoyed at maggette's foot for effing up what would have been the most brilliant trade in clippers history

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 27 January 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

k3vin k., Saturday, 17 September 2011 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

Artest told Yahoo! Sports he plans to wear No. 70 next season, but the NBA has rules that prevent players from switching their uniform number from year to year. The deadline for a player to change his number is in early March to have it go into effect for the next season and once a number is changed, it has to be worn for five seasons with that team before a player is allowed to change it (unless he is traded to a new team or leaves as a free agent).

Artest wore No. 37 after signing on as a free agent with the Lakers in 2009-10 and did switch to No. 15 last season. It's not clear what he had to do to accomplish that.

The uniform rule does not come with any stipulations for a name change, however.

If there is a request or circumstance that calls for a number change within the five-year period is approved, it may come with a cost of some kind, according to a league source.
