This Davis kid is the real deal. I hope he stays healthy so we can watch him for a long time. NBA centers grow into the job slowly.

Aimless, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

I barely even watched the tourney this year. I'm not sure I could pick most of these dudes out of a lineup.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the lottery was tomorrow?

Clay, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

it is.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

oh I read that it was tonight. oops

polyphonic, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

So many guys in the top 10 are crazy overrated imo. I feel like this might be a Dirk-Pierce year where the lotto is almost backwards.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 04:29 (eleven years ago) link

tho obvs. Davis is the bomb.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 04:30 (eleven years ago) link

top 4 is very solid imo, drummond could go either way. barnes will turn into a decent pro. 7-10 on that list is def shaky. zeller, jones and henson will be good.

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 04:33 (eleven years ago) link

henson is the most underrated player in the draft imo. he's def a bit thin but he's athletic as hell for a center, has game changing blocking ability and is a solid offensive player. i think he's gonna be great in the nba, esp if teams start to trend smaller.

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 04:34 (eleven years ago) link

kinda hope the kings get this somehow. davis, cousins, reke, and thomas on the same team? hello new favorite team

twittering spinster (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

ugh god, no

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

what would not be awesome about that?

twittering spinster (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

only one ball, and Tyreke would still hog it.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

the kings are depressing... they are not fun to watch

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

thomas and cousins are cool, but no team with tyreke and thornton is ever gonna be fun to watch -- shit is just frustrating

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

come on cavs..... gotta make it happen.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

Not meaning to be cruel here, but Davis going to the Sacramento Kings would be as exciting as Kareem going to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Aimless, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

i'm rooting for the kings. you guys would rather watch him on the bobcats?

twittering spinster (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

I'd rather him on the Cavs

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

If the Bobcats get Jerry Sloan then I'm for it.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

You mean Chad's top 4? I don't see it. Thomas Robinson is tweener city and Beal is "the next ray allen" but he shot 33% from 3.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Drummond is the most terrifyingly risky top 5 prospect I can remember.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

thabeet :(

twittering spinster (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

what about the wizards w 1st pick? davis-wall could be brutal

― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 2:07 PM (3 hours ago) Bookmark

well i think this is generally the consensus top 4 -- robinson is def a bit small for PF but he got his numbers in college and has pretty advanced post moves. he isn't a tweener in the derrick williams sense, tho, yeah he's not gonna be a star. i think he could be a productive offensive PF who is somewhat deficient in other areas of the game a la al jefferson

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

i've heard beal as "next eric gordon" not "next ray allen"... and his body and game are def similar to gordon's. he was pretty impressive in the tournament and he's still not even 20

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

If a SG's upside is Eric Gordon I'm not taking him in the top 4.

Bill Self's tweeners always get their numbers.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

i think beal's upside is that he'd be better than eric gordon... probably a better shooter. similar players tho.

yeah. i mean he's definitely smallish... i think there's a difference between being a smallish player and a tweener. robinson is just a small power forward, but his game is pretty advanced. i think guys like that can succeed even if a few random guys below him will explode into better players. but a low floor can be attractive, too. he's definitely better than aldrich or the morris twins imo.

Clay, Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:15 (eleven years ago) link

Cavs are actually a great, low pressure situation for Drummond I think.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 31 May 2012 04:18 (eleven years ago) link

as far as drummond goes

1 nola - obv this is not happening

2 cha - this could be interesting, not sure if the bobcats could develop him or that the culture would be right for him but him & biyombo would def be interesting.

3 was - this would be awful. learn under the tutelage of andray blatche!

4 cle - agree w/ matt that this would be great. would take some pressure of tristan thompson too

5 sac - this would be horrifying, obv

6 por - i think this would be fantastic, outside of the curse of portland taking centers high. but he would have no pressure to be an offensive force down low. this could be great for all.

7 golden state - doubt he even lasts this long and i guess it could work but idk, toxic franchise. plus they have bogut.

i would really like to see portland take him

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

melo is almost too big to fail but yeah he was hella overrated at cuse and just seems like a huge stiff. like the heat could stick haslem on him & he'd never score.

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 June 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

classic late breaking injury news scenario re pj3

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

teams hear theres something wrong w/his knee but dont know exactly what, plus all those teams who thought they had no shot at him who made promises to other guys

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

the hear not trading back up like three spots in the second round to draft doron lamb is insane. seriously some of these teams are just... lamb will be mario chalmers in 2 years but better.

my only thought is that maybe they're confident that they're gonna get ray allen.

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 June 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

if rayrays gonna go to the heat he should just sign w/okc instead, go toward the light ray

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:03 (eleven years ago) link

idk... how bad could his knee injury be? and, even if he had to miss three months, so what? it just seemed like a convenient excuse for GMs not to take him.

and the stupid thing is that it stopped being a risky pick like outside of the top 12. it's not like the guy is a two time felon or something.

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 June 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

agree totally

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

but i mean how bad could his knee be is like totally fucked for life i guess, but it def seems worth the risk, unless teams had more infos than we did

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

pj3 is a classic case I think of GMs downgrading a player bcuz he's not what people thought he would or could be and in the process misevaluating his true talent.

there's no way jones is gonna have a worse career than john jenkins, joedan cunnigham or fucking MILES PLUMLEE.

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 June 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

fab melo and sully.... lol

reading the down the thread consensus went from "sully sux, worst athlete in the draft" to "his back is fucked but not a bad pick! ;)" explain?

am0n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

its just they got him w/a low pick, i mean hes prob top 5 in the draft as far as basketball skills, but bottom five in athleticism, also an injury risk, seems like an ok pick at 21

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

his ceiling is prob 'starter'

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

lot of people think he couldve been top five in last years draft, tho i suspect he wouldve fallen once the combine results came in

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

track record is not good apparently for ppl who are *that* unathletic. i guess he'll probably be able to score but not sure abt defense.

call all destroyer, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

yeah hes most likely a bench player, but i mean at 22, i wouldve take pj3 tho

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

and maybe he will get somewhat more athletic once he gets in better shape and his back issues are worked out, this has been known to happen

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

ok got it. now explain ~fab melo~

ay m bison:

Analysis: I really like this pick for the Spurs. Denmon is the sort of efficient combo guard who could thrive in the Spurs' system. He shoots it well, defends and can even play the point in a pinch. I'm not expecting huge things from him, but could see him as a rotation player in San Antonio down the road.

two years pass...

Was drifting around in old threads and found this gem from June 2012, quoted upthread. Jordan posted a long draft pick analysis by some guy called Draft Rater:

"In the tail end of the first round and throughout the second, we're sorting through several big men with fairly weak Draft Rater résumés. The Rater is a particularly harsh judge at the center position, where it frowns on the prospects of four centers with first-round aspirations -- Tyler Zeller, Meyers Leonard, Fab Melo and Festus Ezeli -- and flat-out mocks Miles Plumlee, who is off-the-charts bad with a 2.49 Draft Rater projection."
