July 6, 1996. Important date? The last time either Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison wasn't under contract with the #colts. Let that sink in

Reggie seems like a sure acquisition for Oakland, no? He's a WR and he's old.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/packers-keep-randall-cobb-with-four-year-deal-worth--40-million-033833982.html

Randall Cobb staying put in Green Bay. I think Cobb being able to play for a winner on TV all the time could end up being lucrative in other ways off the field that could make up for the salary he could have gotten in Oakland or Jacksonville.

I got to figure Reggie Wayne will try to play somewhere this year, but it will be weird for him no longer to be a Colt. Got to say though, he didn't seem like the same player last year, the age seemed to catch up to him last year coming off the injury. How Wayne went into his last camp with the Colts last year was pretty classic.

earlnash, Monday, 9 March 2015 04:04 (nine years ago) link

lol sanchez staying with the lol iggles for 2 years, 16 million

slothroprhymes, Monday, 9 March 2015 12:13 (nine years ago) link

only 5.5m guaranteed tho, so if he plays he gets paid like a reasonably costed qb and if he doesn't he is a reasonably costed back up.

much better deal than the wheelbarrows of cash they dumped at byron maxwell's feet. frank gore pick up is interesting, by all logic he should be done but can't help feeling he will do something there, and they didn't overextend on the contract afaict. apparently they really wanted mccourty too.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 March 2015 12:38 (nine years ago) link

they also let maclin go which leaves a pretty anonymous wr corps

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 13:52 (nine years ago) link

iirc they are paying riley cooper a lot of money? presumably chip sees something there. idk. jordan matthews looked promising last year.

rumours that patrick willis retiring at 30

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 March 2015 14:37 (nine years ago) link

just saw that, wow

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 14:50 (nine years ago) link

he experienced a "religious awakening of sorts"

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:02 (nine years ago) link

that is a weird twist to the tale. i always thought that 1) rookie contract 2) get paid 3) play 3-4 years of that contract 4) retire is actually a pretty smart approach for a talented footballer but i guess this is...something else

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

What the hell goes on in SF? A few years ago, Glen Coffee was drafted to back up Frank Gore and then retired after one year because of a religious awakening.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:34 (nine years ago) link

lol i forgot about that!

call all destroyer, Monday, 9 March 2015 15:36 (nine years ago) link

Oh, I never knew this, but wikipedia says Coffee went on to join the Army after completing his degree and is now a paratrooper.

Good for Willis imo

you have no idea why he retired yet. he might be drinking cyanide flavour kool aid right this minute.

horrible weekend for niners fans

deadspin is the quintessence of an unreliable narrator

Aimless, Monday, 9 March 2015 18:42 (nine years ago) link

dropping desean not long after the riley cooper racist explosion and then signing riley to a long-term deal did look pretty sus, even if just as a result of the timing. the shady mccoy trade would take a bit of doing to stretch into a racist move.

...i think? idk. philly ain't the most enlightened place in the world. otoh stephen smith is a dipshit of considerable size

slothroprhymes, Monday, 9 March 2015 20:30 (nine years ago) link

segue: not that it makes anything a done deal, but pats declined revis's option

slothroprhymes, Monday, 9 March 2015 20:32 (nine years ago) link

Now it's being reported that Gore may not land in Philly, but in Indy instead (which, tbh, is probably a better fit). Still, Philly has already made it known they're interested in Mark Ingram as well, so wth is Stephen Smith even talking about.

julius thomas to the jags for $9 mil/year, lolz all around

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:14 (nine years ago) link

@MikeKlis: Broncos not only didn't make an offer to TE Julius Thomas this offseason, they never made a call.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:19 (nine years ago) link

The idea that an NFL head coach in 2015 would be making personnel moves based on race is just crazy. It's the Eagles doing a salary dump to re-allocate the cash in other positions. Those two players were going to cost $20 million combined. My guess is they are going to get 4 good $5 million dollar a year players on the o-line and defense then try to draft someone fast in the middle rounds for the offense on a rookie contract. They will probably pick up a vet wideout for depth who has a low contract.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:25 (nine years ago) link

It does seem that the Eagles signing Sanchez and making this moves makes at least seem feasible they might be working to make a deal and get Mariotta. I'll believe it can happen when it happens.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:29 (nine years ago) link

I think the Bears dumping Marshall on the Jets was a similar type of salary dump. You got one good WR in Jeffrys, roll the dice and turn Marshall's salary into a DB and a LB. The defense is the thing that is most in shambles in Chicago.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:31 (nine years ago) link

You want an example of this kind of move, look at the Colts the past couple of years. That team was totally spent in that year Manning was out. They pretty much used mid-level free agents and rebuilt their defense in an off season by just doing that exact thing.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:33 (nine years ago) link

If the Iggles get Mariota somehow, tell the offensive line to protect him like the family jewels, because if they do he will take you to places you want to go.

Aimless, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:37 (nine years ago) link

mariota would have protection if he somehow ends up at the eagles, just maybe not targets. i don't see it tho, they clearly want to use their resources on defense and use mostly spare parts on offense after the line and lean on the system. brandon graham another good FA pick up on D. chip is going to be so pissed when he finds out all these big new signings are black dudes.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 11:57 (nine years ago) link

well i guess brandon graham makes one good pick up on D, at any rate

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 11:59 (nine years ago) link

very happy to see Cobb staying in GB, IMO he's just as important as Jordy and I really did fear Ted letting too many good WRs walk
