Browns V.P. of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith had plenty to say on Monday about how the team settled on quarterback Baker Mayfield. Highsmith also shared some insights on why the Browns didn’t settle on quarterback Josh Rosen.“I was at an airport,” Highsmith said Monday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, via the Canton Repository. “UCLA’s volleyball team was in front of me. You heard so much about Rosen. He’s this or that. We all know how people talk.“So I asked one of the volleyball coaches, ‘What’s Rosen like?’ He said, ‘Aaaa, you should probably ask his girlfriend. She’s one of the players. She’s over there.’“I’m like, ‘All right coach. That’s good enough.’ . . . I don’t know what all this means, but there was something about him that bothered me.”

why is it that every time someone in the browns front office has opened their mouth since the draft it has been to spout some dumbass reason for why they picked mayfield or didn't pick another guy. it almost seems too much, like it's an elaborate troll, but the simplest answer is browns
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:12 (six years ago) link
Josh Rosen rules and I'm glad he didn't go to that cursed franchise full of idiots who make personnel decisions for literally no reason
this is actually dumber than the time they drafted Johnny Football because some homeless guy told them to do it
― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:18 (six years ago) link
It’s insane, they didn’t pass on him based on his gf’s opinion, they passed based on her volleyball coach not having an opinion. I can’t even believe I read that. If Rosen turns into Wentz or even Goff I hope everyone is fired.
― omar little, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:04 (six years ago) link
And yeah at least the homeless guy had an opinion
Nah, Baker Mayfield’s legit. The Browns are fine.
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:37 (six years ago) link
he's a legit talent for sure not sure if he has the right personality tho to be a franchise qb esp for the browns
― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link
the Browns may be fine I'm just surprised that a franchise known for blowing draft picks would publicly admit that their due diligence with a top ten QB prospect partially included their VP of player personnel deciding to not walk a few yards to talk to someone who intimately knew the QB because he didn't like how someone else phrased their non-opinion.
― omar little, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link
It seems like a good sign that the Pats targeted Mayfield imo

not sure how real the pats' reported interest was, mayfield's ppl basically made them qualify their interest to even let them meet with him, so they had to say something.
most ppl i respect are saying 1) the real unknown with him is how much you can separate his great #s from lincoln riley and 2) the browns will need to develop an offense around him and not just try to cram him in whatever system. so i think the key to whether he has a successful career is who cle hire to replace hue when he gets fired midseason.

Im glad my job wasn't to have to pick out of those QBs, as all of them seem flawed in personality or game.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 12:23 (six years ago) link
As of now, I kinda think the Ravens with Lamar Jackson might have had the best qb pick from where it was on the draft.

hmmmm
In nearly two hours of dramatic and tearful testimony at a preliminary hearing on Thursday morning, Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend Elissa Ennis testified that the 49ers linebacker never hit her, never broke her cell phone, and that she lied repeatedly to investigators about the Feb. 11 incident that sent Foster to jail.“I was pissed,” Ennis testified under oath, saying that Foster had broken up with her in the morning before she called 911, so she fabricated domestic violence allegations. “I wanted to end him.”Joshua Bentley, Foster’s attorney, then cross-examined Ennis: “Is it true that you told Foster in texts after the arrest that, ‘your career is over, you’re going after him, you’re going after the Niners, and you’re going after his coaches?'”“Yes sir,” Ennis replied, breaking down in tears.Ennis then admitted to having no problem lying to investigators, and she acknowledged that she had falsely accused another ex-boyfriend of domestic violence in 2011 after he tried to break up with her.“I’m sorry, I really am,” Ennis said crying. “I’d like to apologize to everyone.”

On average, the players probably know more people in the military than Trump knew before he became commander in chief.

I'm watching this doc on last season's Dallas Cowboys.Usually these shows make me a fan of any team, but literally no one comes across well. Especially their coaching staff, Dez Bryant, and Ezekiel Elliott. Shockingly unlikable. And the NFL produced it! https://t.co/kgePHSpPgN— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) June 12, 2018

“At first I was like dang, we’re in last place by like fifteen yards!” Gronkowski said breathlessly, translating the race to football-speak moments after the finish. Rob’s dad, brothers and pals who came with him to cheer on Team Gronkowski placed numerous $69 bets on his horse to place. Each of those wagers paid out to the tune of $1200.“I went to London and I dominated that game, we dominated that game as a team. This horse is coming from London now and playing its first game in the States, so hopefully that happens.”The group settles in at a reserved table overlooking the track and gets to work on a tub of Coors Light. Gronk smiles down on his subjects and practices his royal wave, greeting fans with a “Happy 6/9!” and posing on his balcony for pictures like a prince lording over his kingdom.Standing tall in stall No. 6, Gronkowski (the human) shakes his head back and forth and sighs, flapping his lips the way a horse does. “Is this the noise a horse makes?”“Wow—did you see Justify’s ass?” Big G says, in genuine appreciation of the magnificent Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. “It’s huge!”A group of what must be Jets fans catches sight of Gronk heading down the tunnel and yell, “SECOND SUCKS!”

it's not always 100% of the time but it seems like so many of those guys who get a huge workload and have a career season above 1800 yds rushing, it winds up never being the beginning of a new plateau, it's mostly the last gasp of dominance before they decline markedly or sometimes completely.
