I do kinda like the whole "we finally made it mama" aspect of college sports when one team finally gets over on another or wins the big game.
You see it in the players all the time, but not as much in the coaches as your pro coaches are either corporate stooges or so cutthroat, they got bodies buried all over NJ swamps.

tua will be ok. even if he never takes another snap he will be venerated as a hero by alabama fans forever. they will see to it he gets a nice, soft job somewhere if he wants it. it's the expendable players who permanently ruin their bodies just to get into the rotation on a power-five also-ran team who deserve our pity.

There was some amazing games today. Alabama and Auburn was really nuts and the IU/Purdue game was really tightrope end.
Lynn Bowden deserves to get some national props and a big tip of the hat to UK offensive coordinator Eddie Grand (& head coach Mark Stoops) for completely re-doing their offense on the fly and moving Bowden a WR/KR into full time Wildcat QB (literally this time). UK went 5-2 with this crazy scheme, including a loss to Tennessee they could have won. In that time, Bowden has run for over 1100 yards and scored 11 TDs on the ground from QB. They had to do this as they lost their two top starting QBs at that point.
I'm sure some pro scouts have been paying attention and curious to see where Bowden is at the combine before the draft. If his 40 time comes out good, I bet he goes up the draft board quite a bit.
― earlnash, Sunday, 1 December 2019 03:33 (four years ago) link
I'm sure FSU is going to back up the bank truck to try to hire Stoops away and I do think he is a good coach, but I kinda hope that he hangs around. UK will probably match the money and he has a shot to build something there that would be unique. Why work in Bobby Bowden's shadow when you can become Bobby Bowden.

The Iron Bowl was epic. It was delectable to see Saban so angry and helpless. Also, a great showing for the Key & Peele East West Bowl, with JaTarvious "Boobie" Whitlow and Smoke Monday making some great plays. Jaylen Waddle presumably didn’t pay much attention to the postgame locker room speech from coach.

earlnash doing the lord's work in this thread w/r/t Lynn Bowden: 22 carries for 284 yards and 4 TDs yesterday
i won't delude myself into thinking Kentucky should be a centerpiece of any college football thread, but w/ Smoke, Rose and Rodriguez back next year, plus the return of Terry Wilson, things are looking bright in the LEX. (i'm assuming Bowden will leave after this season, which he should.)
as for non-UK content: as always, anyone but Ohio State, please. I'll be rooting for LSU (and Georgia, if available)
― alpine static, Monday, 2 December 2019 06:24 (four years ago) link
Given the dominance of a handful of perennial powerhouse teams, the only way to inject any real excitement into the college playoffs would be to expand it to at least eight teams, with extra preference given to conference champions. Ideally I'd drop one regular season non-conference game and hold a sixteen team tourney that included all the mid-major champions and more power five at-large seeds.
The only way to make this year's playoffs less exciting would be to replace LSU with Georgia or Alabama. (btw, ty Auburn, well done)
― A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 8 December 2019 18:51 (four years ago) link
16 would be the ideal, but I doubt it would ever happen. I think really 8 would be feasible. They have one more round of games next week after the conference playoffs. Top 4 seeds get a home game. Winners and losers seed into Bowl games with 2 games being the final 4. Same deal on National title game. That would be easy to do. Football is tied to the owners of the Bowls and the power conferences they really have quite a bit of clout in this setup.
I'd think that 'bonus' home game would be tempting.

Thank Mississippi State. They ended Tua's year.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 December 2019 17:07 (four years ago) link
spoken like a true Crimson Tide fan, JF. but thanking Mississippi State for Tua's injury implies that Mississippi State players were personally to blame for his injury, when all they were doing was playing a football game, same as the Tide. I'm pretty sure some players on teams opposing Bama got hurt this year, too. Auburn, otoh, scored more points and won the game.
― A is for (Aimless), Monday, 9 December 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link
It was a tackle in a football game (one he arguably shouldn't have still been playing in), but I place no blame on the Bulldogs players. I'm just saying Tua never made it out of Starkville to make it to Auburn, where the difference would have been significant.
Anyway, I don't care who wins as long as Clemson goes down.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 December 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link
No doubt there are several alternate realities in which the Tide beats Auburn and takes this year's championship. Along with alternate realities in which the Oregon Ducks... but wait, this is getting out of hand.
― A is for (Aimless), Monday, 9 December 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link
every game has a normal probability distribution for (team1_points - team2_points). for alabama or any school with the best players, the distribution is usually shifted +21 or so points with a sigma of 10 or fewer points. so alabama should really be asking that they play each team in a best of 2000 series each week, to be certain the brilliant median score difference shines through for the playoff committee.

or maybe the point of sports isn't to determine which team is better. perhaps the point is to tell stories. stories about a catfish'd linebacker or a coach named Derbis that really likes jesus. or maybe a catfish'd linebacker who also really likes jesus. maybe this is the point of sports.

Alabama was not looking all the dominant this year before they lost Tua. LSU beat them very very easily. And let's not forget how badly Clemson beat Bama last year in title game. Fuck Saban.

I like how that video extolling Ames, Iowa mentions its city water supply as one of its many fabulous local wonders. Twice! It also wants us to know that the weather is good in the springtime, without saying that spring is sandwiched in between a wretched winter and a torrid summer and only lasts about six weeks.

No argument here. Alabama was average this year, and there's not a Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts in the pipeline right now. We'll see how Tua's brother does, but I suspect the game plan will no longer revolve around a superman qb.

From its inception to 2017, the game was sponsored by the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant franchise and officially known as the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl.[8] After Restaurant Brands International acquired Popeyes in 2017, they declined to renew sponsorship. Elk Grove Village, Illinois — "home to the largest industrial park in the United States" — picked up the sponsorship in 2018, renaming the bowl as the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl.[9]
