my only hope for this week is that belichick lets chip win to help him stick around bc they're buds

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

@UTKevinAcee
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell just said it appears San Diego will not be able to present a viable plan in time to keep the #Chargers.

looking forward to the rams going to san diego in five years

but you're not anywhere they're likely to move to, i.e. LA i guess? seems super lame, looking for a bright side

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:16 (eight years ago) link

I'm in Oakland. The team that plays here is probably also moving, so it's more likely that I'll just stop watching football (which I more or less have already).

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 December 2015 01:18 (eight years ago) link

Feel like pickin' for the first time this year.

Thursday - Packers at Lions- Surprising an interesting match-up considering the Lions defense has figured something out and beat the Pack in Green Bay a few weeks back. I got to think Packers but the story would be much more interesting if the Lions won.

Early Sunday -
Jets at Giants- They really should be in the same division. Jets seem to be not a fluke. I got to think a bad loss could weigh on Coughlin. This seems like a year the Jets win this one.
Cardinals at Rams- Rams defensive front is quite good but I think AZ has too much offense to hang.
Falcons at Bucs- Falcons are fading hard and the Bucs have been improved. Tampa.
Squawks at Vikings- This is a big game. Minnesota needs to put the pedal down to win the division. Seattle loss pretty much elimates them, right? I'm going Vikings.
Niners at Bears- I'm going Bears and hoping they don't play down to their opponent. Being that the Niners gave 80s Bears so much trouble, I hope Chicago rolls them bad. All things said, it does seem like the Bears are improved. Defense is much better than the last 2-3 year black hole and Cutler has cut down on mistakes.
Jaguars at Titans- One will rise, one will fall. No clue on these clubs.
Texans at Bills- Hands up who would have thought Tyrod Taylor and Brian Hoyer would have higher QBR rating than Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Rofflesburger? Oh yeah, it's happened. Don't think it means much, but kinda weird. I think this game is a pickem being in Buffalo.
Ravens at Dolphins- Considering the weird crap that happens around the Ravens and Dolphins, this game should be played in the middle of a tropical storm. It would be more entertaining that way, check the weather. Who cares.
Bengals at Browns- Ah...now this is a matchup. These two fan bases are both so self-loathing that this game always has meaning. You got to go Bengals, but weird crap always happens in these games. No matter how clueless Cleveland or Cincy has looked, they seem to play up or both play ugly as sin in this game. Don't be surprised if it is a very competitive game.

Late Sunday -
Chiefs at Raiders
Broncos at Chargers
Eagles at Pats
Panthers at Saints

Sunday Night - Colts at Steelers
Monday Night - Cowboys at Hatcats

call all destroyer, Friday, 4 December 2015 02:22 (eight years ago) link

still I don't think anybody predicted how far the offense would fall. obv no Jordy makes it easier to take Cobb out of the mix but Packer WRs are almost playing street football where they run their routes and just kinda stand there waiting for Rodgers to fling it up in the air like they're playing "500"!

Got to love that Lion fans a week later get to remind Brown's fans that they really do not know pain.

earlnash, Friday, 4 December 2015 13:11 (eight years ago) link

went to bed at 20-0

saw the facemask call this morning, so awful. missed calls are bad but i think everyone accepts they are part of the game. phantom calls otoh are unacceptable, such a feel-bad. whoever called that penalty couldn't have seen actual penalty contact because it wasn't there, so what was the sign or shortcut or heuristic that made that official confident in the probability that whatever he saw was actually a penalty? because whatever that is is what they have to stop doing!

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 4 December 2015 14:04 (eight years ago) link

I agree that the call was dumb but the NFL has been pretty consistent about flagging defenders who grab the QB's head, just saying. He got a finger in there and twisted the neck. It's like 100% incidental but still, that's the rule. Just like the offside on Peppers which otherwise would've swung the game.

Got to love that Lion fans a week later get to remind Brown's fans that they really do not know pain.

In one sense yeah, the Lions SHOULD be in the playoff hunt, given that both their dodgy losses came vs. the two current wild card teams, between that, the PI flag getting picked up in the playoffs and the Jim Schwartz illegal challenge play the Lions have certainly lost in some fucked up ways, HOWEVER I think any Browns fan would trade franchises with them in a second

frogbs, Friday, 4 December 2015 14:37 (eight years ago) link

lol dude

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 4 December 2015 14:50 (eight years ago) link

"grab the QB's head"
"twisted the neck"

at most his finger brushed the facemask and in fact you can't even tell 100% from pics or video that there was contact with the facemask at all, his finger could just be right by it. all the movement was caused by the contact with the shoulder pad.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 4 December 2015 14:52 (eight years ago) link

I agree with you - but the league calls that ALL THE TIME on QBs. Since we have no replay/challenge system to pick up flags (unless you're Detroit I guess?) thats just the way it goes, ref sees part of the hand go in the face mask and the neck twist, he throws the flag. On replay you can see it's clearly just incidental and it looked worse than it was, but for some reason the NFL lets big game-changing penalties like that just stand. I mean full disclosure I am a huge Packer fan and everyone here knows we 100% got away with one, I don't wanna imply that we deserved this game at all!!

frogbs, Friday, 4 December 2015 15:21 (eight years ago) link

NFL football accounts for just a handful of programming hours each week, but accounts for 22% of total average viewership of the three networks this fall, according to CNNMoney’s analysis of Nielsen ratings data.

i had no idea the nfl was at THAT level of popularity; if I'm reading that correctly over 1 in 5 people watching Fox, ESPN and NBC are watching a football game?

Eugene Goostman (forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 December 2015 19:20 (eight years ago) link

Without football, viewership at CBS -- which has a Sunday afternoon package of games and had Thursday Night Football this fall -- would have fallen 15%.

effectively, NFL is more important to CBS than shonda rhimes is to ABC

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 6 December 2015 20:33 (eight years ago) link

people were really complaining about that face mask call on rodgers when the replay showed rodgers being hit in the face by the defenders' fingers, huh? football fans, i guess

k3vin k., Sunday, 6 December 2015 20:47 (eight years ago) link

even if it was clear that rodgers was hit in the face by the defenders fingers, which it isn't, that's not a penalty. i guess if you were a football fan you might know that. why are you here anyway?

― Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, December 6, 2015 3:59 PM (18 minutes ago)

it's just such a silly thing to complain about. the guy clearly hit rodgers in the face, rodgers head jerked, the refs don't have the benefit of the replay. it's a reasonable if possibly technically incorrect call

there have been plenty of controversial calls this year that were much more egregious

Some of the talking heads really talking up KC's D. Don't think it matters as Andy Reid will screw it up in a close game late even if they get a shot.

I'm interested to see what AJ McCarron does with this shot with the Bengals. Dude won some huge games in college and he just got handed the keys to a pretty tricked out offense even with Eifert potentially out for a bit. If it goes well, it will end up being a big story.
