That's completely awesome. Is "Republican" the code word for crazy ex-celebs these days?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I completely agree with the "Democrats take the African-American vote for granted" sentiment but the Republican party is being run by loonies! I can only support this if he goes in as a Weldian Republican (ie, fiscally conservative but socially liberal).

Well actually it doesn't matter if I support this or not because I don't live in PA but I'm kind of all a-tizzy in a swirling vortex of WTF.

Dan (Governer Swann!) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:16 (eighteen years ago) link

That's kind of the problem huh? Not to turn this into a too political thread but Democrats basically have taken minority votes for granted for a long, long time, which seems to be biting them in the ass. Now hispanics and blacks are joining in with old white dudes to vote against you! Hooray team!

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Yep. When the party that alleges to take up your cause spends much of its political capital patronizing you and not actually addressing your problems, there's a big issue.

Dan (Not To Mention The Idea That Attaching Yourself To The Party That Nominally, Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I've said this before to other people, I think the reason why minorities (meaning blacks, hispanics, and women) are starting to increase in numbers with the Republican party because it's kind of like, devil you know versus devil you don't know, right? Think about it the way you put it, the patronizing issue. At least you KNOW the Republicans don't give a shit about your issues and as long as their platform doesn't contain something completely politically repugnant to you*, then why NOT support them? Pretending to care (but not actually caring about your problems) versus actively not caring, ts?

* which is why I have a much bigger issue with women taking this attitude than anything else but that's another story.

... a Weldian Republican (ie, fiscally conservative but socially liberal).

hahaha not to get all political and stuff, but maybe you should ask weld about that training college he ran into the ground. not so "fiscally conservative," that.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:23 (eighteen years ago) link

There's an implied "compared to the stereotypical strawman Democrat" in there.

Dan (Sigh) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:40 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i know, you should use "pre-clinton traditional democrat" instead, heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

We are spectacularly failing to talk about football here.

CAUTION: boring semi-political content follows

Bush's support amongst African Americans in 2004 was not really up significantly, as far as I can tell (and, let's face it, we cannot really trust vote totals in oh let's say Ohio inner cities). So I think the "Demos ignore blacks so they're defecting to the GOP" theme is not really supported by facts. It is true that many Christian black people are drawn to the socially conservative agenda of the Repubs, but what's the paying-more-attention-to-the-black-community solution for that?

There was about a 6-9% increase in the Hispanic vote for Bush, but a) he's "from" Texas, so he's bound to get more support from that, b) it's fair to suppose that some of that support is from Catholic (and increasingly evangelical) single-issue voters who are more concerned about abortion and gay marriage, and c) more Cubans coming of voting age = more Repub votes in FLA.

END BORING SEMI-POLITICAL COMMENT

Eff a Lynn Swann. If Hines Ward ran, though, I'd register to vote in Pennsylvania. And don't you think Jerome Bettis could beat Swannie's ass in an election right now?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Well yes but he has other things to be concerned about.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd like to see Bettis run. ALL OVER THE SEADORKS AM I RIGHT PEOPLE

The game was tied at seven a-a-a-all
When Franklin found he had the ba-all
He made a connection
In the other direction
And the crowd started shouting out INTERJECTIONS
