is banning posters for beefing with mods really what we want to do?

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link

like even if its true is it good

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link

i dont think a day goes by on this board without someone calling someone else some sort of sub human monster,

I must be consistently missing those threads. Glad of that.

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link

This is becoming a far more interesting interpretation of the Gawker meltdown than I expected from a community theatre production.

Something Called Fudge (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:12 (eight years ago) link

yeah it's good because we get a dude who does the grunt work to keep this shed upright m/l singlehanded and isn't a total fucking nightmare about it, what more can we ask for? given what stet contributes if the worst of his excesses is a slightly hairtrigger but basically defensible temp ban on deej we are doing p well

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link

messing w the mods is just good and righteous because they tend to be for whatever reason the ppl around here with the least self awareness, and their defenders are of course the predictable milquetoasts

― lag∞n, Wednesday, July 22, 2015 5:13 PM (Yesterday)

Dude there are a lot of people who aren't even posting on this thread who have been quietly FPing you since you decided to jump on this particular hobbyhorse, like you can't be completely unaware of how much of a tool this is making you look right now?

idg what the pt of this is, lag. u think ppl are too appreciative of stet? or ur fighting for the right to say mean things to him? or is it just random railing against an authority figure?

Mordy, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:15 (eight years ago) link

As always stet I'm willing to pay $10 (£0.18?) monthly for the pro version.

guess democracy is a farce to you as well, have fun voting for billary.

It's not "should" it's "obviously can" there's no value judgment, even if it's bad the only way to enact change is by harassing him mercilessly for his pro bono maintenance of a web forum in 2015 until he gives you the AWS password

my apologies to stet tho i a def went way too far in slandering him, i regret creating the impression that i dislike and disagree with his actions, when i generally really appreciate his work and like him and think hes done a really good job, i do for sure disagree with some things hes done and just kinda threw that out there in a dramatic manner, stet is good ppl tho and generally thankfully pretty even tempered

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:22 (eight years ago) link

kind of surprised at some of the battle lines here... from the outside i'm not sure any of this is worth good people being really abusive to each other.

i'm not on board w/ the dark enlightenment but as far as running a message board goes i think a benevolent dictatorship w/ some democratic input (you can complain about modding all you want, you can vote for a sb, etc) is ideal

Mordy, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:22 (eight years ago) link

mostly bc i'm not sure what the alternative is -- program some kind of voting mechanism so that every controversial issue gets put to a boardwide vote? how would that even work - stet bans deej for 30 days and then there are 5 days for everyone to vote whether they want the ban to be upheld and if the vote fails deej is immediately let back in?

Mordy, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:24 (eight years ago) link

Haha is there a Dark Enlightenment thread the FS&CL thread went down some clusterfucky rathole at some point and I unbookmarked

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:24 (eight years ago) link

FWIW I only said "Stet can pretty much ban who he wants" precisely *because* he doesn't go around treating ILX like his own personal fiefdom.

(many xposts)

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:24 (eight years ago) link

on one hand i'd appreciate a dark enlightenment thread bc i do find some of their stuff provocative + interesting but otoh knowing ilx i'm not sure we need another thread for posters to complain about how everyone is dumb + evil but them. xp

Pretty hilarious how quickly your tone changes when you realize you might get banned.

i dont think thats actually true, like all powers functions with the support of others, even kings are never omnipotent

like lets say the admin (im gonna stop harassing stet cause this is not abt him) decided to close ilx, that wld prob be the ultimate expression of power, but at that point they wld no longer have power over ilx, and it wld likely reconstitute somewhere else

or lets say the admin just started banning ppl like crazy, being a total unhinged despot, this place wld prob turn into a ghost town and again prob reconstitute somewhere else

and then theres the whole issue of imagination like sure the admin has near total control but is this a good thing cld we change it if we wanted to, wld that be desirable, just seems like some ppl really enjoy the actually this is not a democracy line a lil too much, especially when no one is even requesting a democracy lol

also i wldnt be like that upset if i got banned lol, life goes on and so forth

i think lag8n is saying we need to institute a feudal vassalage system on ilx to better keep the modarchy in line

Mordy, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:31 (eight years ago) link

i wld argue what we have is already m/l feudal vassalage system?

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:32 (eight years ago) link

I mean yes obviously ilx can ship of Theseus itself into being elsewhere with enough determination that's not really what I'm trying to observe.

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:33 (eight years ago) link

I don't think you were here when a former site admin unilaterally decided he was going to take away features until people sent him Buffy DVDs in the post? You don't need to be a democracy for there to be a coup.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:33 (eight years ago) link

my biggest beef w stet is prob that he permabanned jw for doing joke hacking fwiw, and i do think a month for deej was a bit much

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:36 (eight years ago) link

How about you apologize for being a titanic asshole to him. Like the art of the not apology apology is strong in you but, yknow, try being a decent person for a sec maybe.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:37 (eight years ago) link

ok whatever you want to call it insulted him whatever is not condescending according to the very considerate not at all comically puffy man jj

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:38 (eight years ago) link

lol i wld love to see one example of jj apologizing in this entire dang message board

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:38 (eight years ago) link

those who cant do teach i suppose

lag∞n, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:39 (eight years ago) link

general question: why are apologies such big deals? they're just words. you don't even have to make restitution. just say some things that you maybe don't even believe about how sorry you are. something about saying "i'm sorry" though really cuts to a human's soul and makes it hard to do w/out tossing in caveats or bullshit.

Mordy, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:41 (eight years ago) link

Naw, you don't sound like a condescending prick either.

pplains, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

stet is great I also vote we all give him lots of money soon to buy deej's freedom

some of the other mods seem to have landed in their position by historical accident, like if we were starting the site today would people be like 'that jj is so calm and rational, he never gets in beefs w/ people and would never, say, start a thread for the purpose of calling out individual ilxors for doing their acutual irl job poorly, he should be put in a position of power'

iatee, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

Like the time that I started a thread to squash beef with gr8080? Like the time yesterday I apologized for misreading someone's tone? Keep sawing away at that table leg, I'm sure you'll get there some day.
