On Sockpuppets

What is the official moderation policy on sockpuppets? I know that it's "discouraged", but is it just something that gets overlooked? What do you do when there's a user with, like, sixty of 'em?

And is it a policy to not reveal who's using a sockpuppet or what sockpuppets are sockpuppets? Or does it get played by ear?

I work for an internet publication. The other day, I overheard my boss telling somebody about some comments we were getting on an article that, saying "I hadn't even heard of the term 'sockpuppet'." I felt pretty special.

I think there is one post on this entire site that I made with a different name, just because I was taking a break from ILX, but couldn't help myself from making a comment about something.

Again, why does ILX allow sock puppets?

because mods would have to do a load of excess work to find out which posters are socks and which are not? and most of the time people use socks for harmless lols rather than spamming or viciousness?

I thought it was pretty easy to tell who was using two or more accounts by looking at the IPs.

depends on whether the sock operator is attempting to distance themselves from their actual real account or not

ya but then it means the mods have to actively monitor for that and who needs that trouble

well someone who really wanted to sock creepily or maliciously could just do so from another location
