End of Year: Mileage (nerdy stats alert)

I always report in kilometres, it's the global standard, miles are obtuse and archaic. Back in my teenage touring days I started using kilometres because maps are in kilometres and it makes navigation easier.

At work, if engineers want to wind me up they show me graphs in lbf or Foot Pounds, it owrks so I probably need to get out more.

Just under 230 miles for April, I'm about 25% down so far this year. April started OK until I got ill again then ended up spending 15 days in a row off the bike.

^ 'not' = now (otherwise that post would be even more pointless)

Have done 467 in June but I'm unlikely to add to that before the end of the month due to a heavy schedule over the next few days, 529 from 28 May - 27 June.

I've had a pain in my left knee for the last couple of weeks. I haven't adjusted anything so the only thing I can think of is that it's because I've been riding much more than normal. It's not too bad, just irritating, and doesn't prevent me riding so at the moment I'm just ignoring it and carrying on. Is this unwise?

Hamburglar's smiling too (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 8 August 2013 07:16 (ten years ago) link

Check saddle height anyway, I felt weird on my bike but hasn't changed my saddle height. Measured it and it was about 30 mm(!) too low. It slipped. A lot.

joe sixpac hologram (Hunt3r), Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

Cleat + saddle position fixed my knee issues . I was told that nee should be directly over the pedal axle when the crank is horizontal and the cleat is centered under the widest part of the foot. The net result was the saddle moving back whilst staying at the same height, cleats moved back as well.

Watching your rides on Strava has been making me jealous.

Managed approx 340 miles all-in this month, some of it mere pottles with toddlers on the Tarka trail, but most of it hard work on the new Cube. Not bad.

off to majorca next week. intend to put in some serious miles & climbing

cozen, Monday, 30 September 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

332 for me. Hopefully will be able to keep it going this autumn/winter - my club has had a relative surge in new members / interest in recent months thanks facebook/twitter/strava and there's no a reasonably group of about ten of us up for fast 50-mile rides each weekend once the racing's over.

I don't know how on earth you can squeeze 800 miles in.

Ah, but not everything goes up on Strava. Strava claims I only did 224 miles in October, but in reality it was 237 - a highly significant difference.

cozen, Saturday, 2 November 2013 10:43 (ten years ago) link

I don't know how on earth you can squeeze 800 miles in.

i'm a bit selfish for one thing, but i get in a lot of commute miles- maybe 100 a week. i justify it as only about 30 or 40 minutes or so extra a day, because it's how i get to work. driving with traffic to work, plus parking and walking to office, is 45 or even 50 mins each way for me. bike/rail to work is 40 to 45 mins each way. riding in, door to desk is about an hour, home is about 65 mins. and i'm really lucky too, most ppl in my situation don't even have an extra 30 mins a day. or colorado's climate.

this all said, 800 was the most i've done under this arrangement, and i'm feelin pretty stale on it.

I missed out on 2000km by getting a bout of tonsillitis this week.

I'm stepping up the job search and also refocusing my riding a bit more on climbing so the milage is going to drop but I should be able to crack 8000km for the year. (I'm also down to 95kg from 102kg when I got to Australia and nearer 105kg at the start of the year so climbing is a lot more fun)
