Work and back today, back being in torrential rain. Fun!

Mark C, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I've pretty much given up now :( - weather has been pretty atrocious this week but even ignoring that it's too cold, and even ignoring that I'm just far to knackered when I wake up.

ledge, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:08 (sixteen years ago) link

alright, you can STOP FUCKING RAINING NOW.

emsk, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom, yesterday morning was lovely! Sun shining, 11 degrees (celsius), perfect cycling weather! AND the weather forecast said it would be dry in the evening. The weather forecast lied, true, but that's not the point.

(not that I can talk, since I refuse to cycle whenever you can see your own breath cos I'm a complete pussy)

Mark C, Thursday, 22 November 2007 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

The weather forecast lied, true, but that's not the point.

Yeah I came out of the tube in the evening and thought "thank CHRIST I didn't cycle" :)

Looks pretty nice out there right now...

ledge, Thursday, 22 November 2007 11:12 (sixteen years ago) link

its 22 degrees F out, and im getting charged up to ride for an hour and a half. this is the day ive been given, this is the day ill ride. lets hope i don't break a collarbone on the ice.

Lying bastard weather forecasters. I finished work about 9.15pm and had to cycle home in the cold, dark, pouring rain, arriving home absolutely soaked to the skin just in time to see Croatia score their third goal. Not great.

sorry off topic, but gbx, ever done margy's hut? adj to aspen obv. i just booked in there for mid march.

we did new york mtn last year it was spec fookin tacular.

-- Hunt3r, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:39 (Yesterday) Link

i haven't, sadly, but i'm v v jealous that you're going to be there in march. CORN-TASTIC.

gbx, Thursday, 22 November 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

last years mid march trip came 1 day after a big dump; if it hadn't, we would have had to walk a bit of the trip in and out. as such i'm a little apprehensive about the trail at lower elevations. this trip is a week later than last years.

maybe i'll start a "i love to do some other shit off season" thread.

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 November 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

oh, and yesterdays ride was great--25 degrees, but i rode the cx bike out on a road ride, but left the ritchey speedmaxes on there. about 8 miles out, i saw some singletrack along the side of the road and remembered that there was a trail system there, although not open to non highlands ranch people. couldn't resist, poached it. rode in there for 45 minutes, perfectly buffed winding and hilly singletrack, some dry packed snow in the shade, with great views of the mountains and a couple of shallow water crossings with still running water. a perfect cx ride. not a single person there.

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 November 2007 15:32 (sixteen years ago) link

well, when i lived in aspen it seemed like early april/late march produced biblical dumps, usually after the lifts had closed. so you might get lucky.

no biking yesterday, contemplating taking out my dad's tank-like trek 830 MTB from the late 80s just for shits

gbx, Friday, 23 November 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I was in Denver 4 years ago when it snowed 3 feet in 48 hours in March (and the US invaded Iraq). Happy days (although no cycling was involved, only trudging through puddles and drifts in unsuitable footwear).

Mark C, Friday, 23 November 2007 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

i was on the last plane that got out of denver that day (7:30 flight). had we not got out, we would have been there for 3 days as the highway in and out of the airport was blocked as well. happy days indeed.

Hunt3r, Friday, 23 November 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

That's a cold headwind out there! Brrrsh.

Laurel, Friday, 23 November 2007 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

most excellent ride today.

took out dad's classy old MTB (Trek 850) and putzed around the back forty. gravel road down to the river, railroad bed along the shore, old and overgrown trail uphill, bush-whacking through the woods (awesome!), gravel road out to the main road, 100 yards of pavement, into the next-door gravel pit for extra-awesome feats of derring-do down piles of gravel and along 4-wheeler paths, back through the woods to the house.

totally sweet, and enhanced by doing it on a 20 or so year old tank-like mtb and in jeans, a sweater, work gloves, and decaying adidas gazelles. accompanied by parent's 100+ pound 10-month old puppy, who, unlike my old dog, did not feel compelled to stick his face in the spokes.

gbx, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:19 (sixteen years ago) link

think i'll head out again, but with camera this time.

gbx, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

what kind of dog is that?!

the big kind

this is him at 6 months!

gbx, Friday, 23 November 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Evans, there is a giant wolf at my house! He weighs 130 lbs and has floppy pointed ears and a white muzzle and the biggest head I have ever seen on a dog.

Laurel, Saturday, 24 November 2007 01:52 (sixteen years ago) link

snot rocket saturday

same nyack trip as last week but colder. 62 miles in 4 hours. nice hill intervals on the return. i've got the chill in my bones and need a hot shower!

More trainer work. God I hate it.

Mark C, Saturday, 24 November 2007 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link

its not that bad! were you watching tv?

cutty, Saturday, 24 November 2007 23:58 (sixteen years ago) link

rode 1.5 hours on cx. mix of road, single track with some packed snow, and dirt road. the dirt road was washboardy and high speed downhill for about 4 miles, which made my assfat hurt. i need to lose assfat. anyway, it was about 38 deg, sunny and perfect.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:58 (sixteen years ago) link

neon and wool rollneck- a man to bridge yesterday and today. but im not sure which is which.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 25 November 2007 02:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe I am pushing too hard - I reckon I'm at 95% of capacity basically the whole time. But really I get so BORED, even if I am watching telly, yeah.

Mark C, Sunday, 25 November 2007 14:47 (sixteen years ago) link

95% capacity? do you have an HRM?

cutty, Sunday, 25 November 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean, i'm not doubting your perceived exertion, but 95% is like a sprint!

cutty, Sunday, 25 November 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

3 hours today at prospect park HQ--

did more of those 60RPM intervals in Z3 (8x4 minutes) and i am truly feeling it in my legs right now. i'm going to try not to do ANYTHING today or tomorrow but consume protein, smoke weed, and play video games (newly unemployed)

cutty, Sunday, 25 November 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh rats, was that expected?

Laurel, Sunday, 25 November 2007 18:57 (sixteen years ago) link

newly unemployed led to my second best season. sorry to hear it tho, if it werent yr plan, cutty.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 25 November 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Cutty, sorry, I forget I'm speaking to people who actually do measure these things! No, all I meant is that I cycle at very close to my limit in terms of consistent speed/input/whatever you call it. Short bursts obviously I can near double my effort

Mark C, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmm, didn't mean to press enter there. Best to just ignore me - I think all I meant is that I might be putting in too much effort in a short space of time.

Mark C, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Rides like gbx's back 40 is what I'm talking about. If I had gone home instead of Ohio for tgiving I could have done that. Jealous.

dan m, Monday, 26 November 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

are what I'm... >:(

dan m, Monday, 26 November 2007 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

New to these bike threads. I went on two rides over Thxgiving weekend in the hills west of Boston, around twenty miles each. My toes froze in my SIDIs.

collardio gelatinous, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 15:25 (sixteen years ago) link

23 degrees this morning, had to bust out the swix ear warmers (which i highly recommend, as i dislike hats for riding). still ridin in my work trousers, undershirt/dress shirt, and light windbreaker tho. if it gets colder than that im wearing somethin thermal on top, i think im at the limit.

why do legs not get cold? mine at least.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

50 degrees, moist ground, 2 hrs, easy easy hardly hit Z2. feel like i'm still recovering from sunday.

cutty, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

legs don't get cold because they're working....right?

cold and sunny and crisp today. good riding. think that sh33na my dispatcher is sweet on me.

gbx, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 01:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i think my bike is too quiet.

i was passing this guy on the left and i'm around him and then he floats out to the right and bars me on my hip and then goes "woah, sorry!" kinda dusky, so maybe a little dark but he sounded genuinely surprised.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 02:51 (sixteen years ago) link

dont wanna ride home at 9 at night bleah.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 03:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i nearly did that to someone today, on the ride home.

passed some dude on a LOUD mountain bike, going over one of chicago's "hills" (overpass). i'm being conservative on the downside (LOL NO BRAKES), and hear the clickety-click of a freewheel coming up on my right, fast. move over to the left, a little confused (who passes on the right?), and nearly check some turbo who's overtaking me. no harm, no foul, but motherfucker was red october compared to the dude i had passed.

gbx, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

gaaaaaaah the streets this morning were lousy with morons. i must've yelled at like 20 people in a 30-minute ride. FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF FUCK OFF. (that is not what i yelled.)

emsk, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 11:23 (sixteen years ago) link

My rear wheel has developed a bit of left-right movement, maybe 3mm. This is bad, right? What is the problem? I have Zinn but it's at home and I want to know if I need to pick up parts on the way home.

caek, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 13:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to the Condor shop at lunchtime. <3 <3 <3

Mark C, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link
