i have some white industries on a cx racing wheelset that has stood up very well to 4 full cx seasons and weighs in under 300g for rear, 93g for the front. theyre good.

It has to be an everything wheel because I don't think I am going to have another bike anytime soon.

well, its bontrager's mantra then: light, strong, cheap--choose any two.

This morning the mavics were looking like the expensive choice, now I am not so sure.

what do people think about the velocity rims that all the cool kids on their single speeds have?
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Sunday, 19 April 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm a rather large person and I bought a pair of Salsa Delgado rims (32 hole front, 36 back) with plain old Shimano 105s for like $250 from Universal Cycles in Portland last year. I've been totally happy with them, even if they are kind of heavy. They replace the cheapo Bontrager wheels that came with my LeMond and feel way more solid.
My defiantly un-hipster non-cool kid bike nerd friend has Velocitys on his Cross-Check commuter and really likes them, he's convinced they're more solid than anything else you could find.
― joygoat, Sunday, 19 April 2009 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link
what tyres do you run guys with the delgados. They seem kind of wide
anyone have any opinion on these?

hmm, delgado + 105 is not a bad option
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Sunday, 19 April 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link
velocity aeroheads are bomber despite no eyelets.
― iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Sunday, 19 April 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link
The Delgados are kind of wide, I think you need to run at least 23s on them. I've got 28mm Gatorskins on mine, mostly because I found them cheap on Craigslist brand new in that size, I probably would have gotten 25s otherwise.
― joygoat, Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link
Velocity Synergy is interesting me as well. Similar to the delgado, but with an off centre profile for the rear.
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Sunday, 19 April 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link
i run a 26mm on my delgado, it's great.
w/r/t hipster velocity rims: the deep-vs are the 'hip' ones, really. but i think the fusions come in almost as many colors. i gather that the quality of the deep-vs has gone down a lot (according to wheelbuilder friend) due to hugely increased demand, and a concomitant decrease in QC at the factory. if i were going to get a deep profile wheel (for CX) i'd go for the dt swiss 1.2s. thinking about getting a 105/1.2 wheelset to replace the stock set that came with my cross-check (which kinda sucks, imo)

I really should stop looking at wheels and do some work. Seems the cheapest way to get Phil wood hubs is to get the Rivendell version, this limits you to a 7 speed freewheel rather than a 9 speed cassette but I am intrigued.
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Sunday, 19 April 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link
I really need to collapse this field. This maybe the guitar through a bass amp of bike question but you can use a road 9 speed cassette and mech on a mountain hub. (frame will take the 135 spacing as the surly has a 132.5mm dropout?
Anyway these are my options, help me decide.

yeah i guess riding 16/20s is a bit minimalist
either of those white wheelsets seem pretty good to me. if yr a bigger dude, you probably ought to go for the 36h, imo, but the aeroheads will probably look cooler
― i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link
a shimano 9 road cassette fits a 9 mtn freehub.
option 1 imo yr gonna have heavy rubber on there anyways.
id still build up a set of $250 36 spoke commuters with like an alex traveller rim. then get the pure lightweight wheelset of your choice for leisure riding later.
― iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 14:27 (fifteen years ago) link
I collapsed the field on the Delgados plus white hubs. I realised I was fussing over grams. A few years back I though a sub-2kg wheelset was an impossible dream.

after last weekend's snowstorm (18" that was gone in a couple of days), i put all of the winter wear esp boots into boxes and away, to reduce clutter. this lead to my 6:15 wakeup call by my v excited 5 year old:

Trying to ride my way out of a cold. I'm not sure if that's advisable, but I've got a race on Monday. Did a 33.5 mile loop in 1 hr 56 yesterday and then the exact same route in 1 hr 58 this morning. If I can keep losing 2 minutes a day I should be able to stretch it out to a good 7 hours by the autumn.

I got tossed of my bike by who knows what coming home from school this afternoon. something got caught in the rear wheel. I got my leg caught between the bars and frame as the bike went over. Nasty bruising I feel lucky that it didn't break anything.

It was the old wheels, I was too cheap for fast shipping on the new ones. I am just stiff and bruised. I managed to bike the rest of the way home. Just kind of bemused as to what it was that got me.

Today: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=47267
Man, it was tough going. Just not quite fit enough, and also the enormous burger lunch + 2 beers made me almost pass out a few miles back. Very pleased we did it - it's a new route, a pretty good one - but it's not quite accurate to say I really enjoyed myself. Finishing on a mile long 8% hill wasn't the best, either.

Fixie build is progressing, slowly. Waiting on tyres, cog. I can't fit the crown race and nor can friendly LBS, will have to try big chain LBS. Also how to fix v-brake lever to bars without removing the tape, hmmm...
― Pro Creationism Soccer 2009 (ledge), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 11:37 (fifteen years ago) link
The bigger problem is v-brake levers will be mountain diameter clamp which is a millimetre or so less than road bar diameter. When I did E's bike I faced this and it took a lot of filing on the break lever clamp to get it to fit.
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 11:50 (fifteen years ago) link
of course this assumes you are using road bars of some sort.
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 11:51 (fifteen years ago) link
Of some sort, yes... really it's a bit odd that the frame didn't come with caliper mountings.
