S/D: Pretenders

I would make this a "Classic or Dud" thread but I have far too much good will towards Chrissie Hynde to subject her to any gratuitous hating. And besides, I suspect that anyone who likes pop music can find something to like, even love, in the Pretenders discography. They were never on any vanguard, and there is a definite MOR sensibility at work on the later albums, but these are not problems for me.

That said, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of consensus on the last few records. Wondering what you all think of them.

And for the record:

Search: "Precious," "The Wait," "Kid," "Brass in Pocket," "Talk of the Town," "Pack It Up," "2000 Miles," "Back on the Chain Gang," "Don't Get Me Wrong," "I'll Stand by You"

Destroy (gently, with no malice aforethought): "Louie, Louie," "Middle of the Road," "Thin Line Between Love and Hate," "Hymn to Her," "Sense of Purpose," that live album, "Night in My Veins"

Destroy destroy destroy: "Phone Call," wherein Chrissie has the opportunity to write a nice vocal melody atop an unusual time signature and demurs

??: "Human"

Search: Practically everything except...

...Destroy: "I'll Stand by You" -- It's bad enough in the first place, but knowing it's the Pretenders makes it even worse.

The first LP is a classic and will always be one of my personal favorites. And I love "The Phone Call"!

I might be seeing them next month. Are they any good live?

i really love 'my baby' off 'get close'. lovely 12 string guitar motif, and a great hook, towards the end, where Chrissie sings, 'could this really happen, in this day and age... like i'm walking onstage' and the music cuts out and crowd sounds swell up and fade away and the riff chimes in again. its sweet.

"The Phone Call" is great .. The first record is one of the best records ever made...

They're great live, too... They play a lot of crowd-pleasers ... they won't be playing "Jealous Dogs" or "Pack it Up!", which is too bad ..

Pretenders is one of the few bands that have stayed consistently great throughout their (her) career. (Except "I'll Stand By You" , which is unbearable..)

.. Best song since "Cruel to be Kind": "Kid"

..Still munching on the new record... no opinion yet ...

Yes, "Kid" really is beautiful.

I like "I'll Stand by You," but this is admittedly based on memories now somewhat dim. I'll have to revisit it and see if I think it holds up.

Is there really anything to destroy? Even their most uneven album ("Get Close") has three or four wonderful songs. Her consistency is impressive; the "Viva el Amor" album, released just a few years ago, was one of her very best.
What's most remarkable about Hynde is that she proves the continued relevance of the auteur theory in music: no matter who cowrote the songs or who's in the band, they always sound like "the Pretenders."

I still haven't warmed too much to Packed, although it has a few good tunes on it. But all of the others, i still listen to pretty regularly.

Packed is uneven, but more rewarding than Last of the Independents (wherein she tries too hard to be a mutha).

Chrissie will always have a special place in my heart. I saw the band (in its original configuration) on my 16th birthday. They had opened for the Kinks the night before, and Ray Davies came out for "Stop Your Sobbing." You can hear an almost identical show from the same tour as bonus material to Pretenders II."

Search: "Tattooed Love Boys," "Talk of the Town," "The Wait."

Destroy: "I'll Stand by You," "The Adultress."

Can hardly imagine how incendiary that lineup must have been live.

They were pretty spectacular. It was stunning how soon after that both Jim and Pete were dead.

The Pretenders live Germany 1981 Recorded by me from digital satellite onto VHS HiFi VCR. Few people in the UK could receive this station, but at this time I had two satellite dishes and two receivers, one for standard SKY channels, the other for stations in France, Germany etc.
