Snow Day Albums

In much the same way reggae doesn't sound quite right unless it's hecka sunny out, there are certain albums I associate with different seaons. For example, SKYLARKING by XTC seems to be the perfect sonic compliment for the slow emersion from Spring into Summer. THE SPIRIT OF EDEN by Talk Talk exudes the feeling of warm Spring nights where the air is thick and lush greenery blooms ubiqutously. So, with this in mind....what albums conjure a snow-caked environment for you?

For some reason, I've always associated MOVING PICTURES by Rush as a "winter album." Maybe it has something to do with them being Canadian, but it just feels "snowy" to me. Likewise, A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORLD, the compilation by Gang of Four seems perfectly suited to snow-covered pavement and wintery winds whipping `round city corners. I've been repeatedly playing Neil Young's haunting score to Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man", and its desolate tone aptly fits the concept of a wintery wasteland as well. WAR by U2, but maybe that's just because of their old penchant for fartin' around in the snow in their older videos and press shots.

Yerz?

Try the B-52's first album. Something about that echoey sound always said 'winter' to me.

albums I associate with the cold, probably because I shovelled snow to them a lot:

Afghan Whigs, Black Love
GVSB, House Of GVSB
Fugazi, The Argument
Portishead, Portishead

and now...
Queens Of The Stone Age, Songs For The Deaf

I've shovelled to Kelly O, Def Leppard's Hysteria and GC recently, but those are usually in my walkman whether or not its snowy.

'Snow Days' by Trip Shakespeare!

It's coming down
Snow pains on the motor veins
Keeps your business on the ground
It's coming down
Slow day for the teacher
And her wheels are spinning now
On account of winter, Mrs. Braintree
All the roads are closed
And the stores are loot for vagabonds
It's coming down
Go home!

It's coming down
Snow lays on the chainfields
There's a blessing on the ground
It's coming down
If your lanes are crammed with children
There's a blessing on your town
On a lucky Monday, Mrs. Braintree
All your lanes are waxen silver
And the stores are loot for vagabonds
It's coming down
Go home! Go home and take a snow day, Mrs. Braintree!

Mrs. Braintree, you're a chilly northern woman
Go home from yonder bus stop
Because there's a blessing on the ground
Mrs. Braintree, it is written
When the snows come over Dixie
All the roads are closed and the stores are loot for vagabonds.

The Cure - Disintegration
Hoover - The Lurid Traversal of Rte. 7
Low - Long Division

Boris - "Kuruimizu"

A few months back, the very extended and very spacy last 2/3 or so soundtracked my car crawling through a blizzard perfectly. The repeating guitar pattern just sounds like snowfall to me for whatever reason.

Also: Disco Inferno (esp. "Footsteps in the Snow," duh)

Anything by the Handsome Family, who seem to mention snow in half their songs.
Also, the Band and for some reason a lot of old country music.
But I love listening to reggae on a snowy day too.

Residents -- Eskimo. It'll put a chill in ya even in the heat of August; bundle up first.
Windy & Carl -- Antarctica. A beautiful counterpoint to action of any kind.

Deserter's Songs by Mercury Rev for me, expecially Endlessly - those big ghostly harmonies seem made for snow for me.

And lets not forget the Xmas records - A Christmas Gift For You sounds rubbish in July.

Deserter's Songs always reminds me of fall in Upstate NY.

Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train

Piano jazz for me is the winter equivalent of reggae in the summer. But it can't just be snowy. It has to be snowy in a big city.
