Rebel Rebel

According to Nick Pegg's 'The Complete David Bowie', Bowie himself played guitar on 'Rebel Rebel'. Whilst it's hardly difficult to play and DB could have handled it, I'd always assumed that it was Mick Ronson. The timing and the sound are totally Ronson.

Was it Bowie after all?

Funny, every time I hear "Rebel Rebel" I think the timing and sound are totally Keith Richards. Still, classic tune.

You know of course that the crowd noises on the intro to "Diamond Dogs" were lifted wholesale from the Faces' "Coast To Coast/Overture For Beginners" live album. Thus after DB screams "This ain't rock 'n' roll - this is GENOCIDE!" Rod the Mod can clearly be heard greeting the crowd with "Al-roight?" Kind of defuses the intended apocalyptic scenario.

I thought DB played all the guitar on Diamond Dogs.

eighteen years pass...

So the US single version of this is very different, with lots of backwards echo, annoying backing vocals and sort of funky/Latin percussion - and half the running time is taken up with the outro. It's completely uncommercial!
