I need a new guitar

I have a stable of about ten cheap, shitty guitars. From the lightweight and fun but impossible to tune Silvertone, to the "neck will bend as soon as the temperature rises or drops more than 3 degrees" Danelectro copy, to the wholly useless sprakly Brownsville with intonation problems.

I'm looking to spend about $600-800. In my old days I relied heavily on Telecasters and 'metal' guitars (like BC Rich and ESP, which are always pretty reliable but look dumb) but sold those off long ago.

Tone is most important. Remember in Spinal Tap, when Nigel is talking about the guitar you can play a note and 'go out for a bite' and come back and it's still ringing? That's what I want. What kind of guitars did Flower Travelin' Band use? Should I go hollow body? Semi hollow?

I also want a guitar that doesn't have to be tuned between each song.

I'm totally interested in classic Travis Beans (duh) but no way am I paying $2,000 for something that will be bumping around in the back of a van for months at a time.

I alternate between playing heavy fuzz / psych rock and creepster acoustic (but electric) blues. For pedals I use the Holy Grail, Big Muff, A shitty old Boss delay pedal, and a few random metal pedals from time to time. I use an Orange solid state amp (one of those reissues) and will probaly go tube asap. But new guitar is first. I had to borrow one for a gig the other night. That just won't do.

Help if you can.

you can get a used Guild Starfire 4 for something in that range. they're nearly as good as a gibson es335 - or better in some cases. I've got one. it's great. stays in tune forever, sounds wonderful clean, dirty, totally fuzzed out, anything. and it's loud, and it's light, and it looks nice, and it plays nice.

seriously. very rich sound - lots of nice overtones. it's like agood indian curry. many subtleties in the flavor, and the taste lingers with you for hours :)

aaron, that sounds perfect. Thanks. will research.

God Body, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:05 (eighteen years ago) link

With all of the import guitars out now, you have quite a few different choices for $600-800 bucks if you go new. I think you cannot go wrong finding a guitar that feels good, will stay in tune and sounds nice and crisp unplugged. If it has these three things, you can generally put whatever kind of pickups and pots in it to make it sound good.

I've had good luck with a Paul Reed Smith Santana SE. They are made in Korea and quite well made and they use good tuning keys and it stays in tune way better than my Gibson. The stock humbuckers didn't really blow me away, so I put in a set of Seymour Duncans and this thing is about my favorite guitar.

For that kind of cash, you could get a Mexican made Fender Telecaster or Strat and put whatever kind of pickups you want in it. The coolest Tele I think is out there is that 72 Fender Japan reissue with the two humbuckers. I tried one out and would like to have one of those.

For hollowbodys, the new Hagstrom reissues look pretty nice. A store around here has some and they look quite nice, especially the one that looks like a 335. I haven't played one, so I can't say how they sound.

No guesses on what Flower Travellin Band used on "Satori," huh? Man. Single best guitar tone EVER!!

Gosh Buddy, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:19 (eighteen years ago) link

hmm those links dont work.

i agree with earl - dont worry about the amplified sound as much as all those other factors. generally, if it sounds nice unplugged, it'll sound good plugged in, even with "crappy" pickups. and that's something thats true of guitars of all types and price ranges.

I don't know about hagstrom, but Guild is a more than reputable company on its own, so I trusted that name on the 335 copy.

i bought mine on ebay to boot. have had quite good success getting them on ebay, though i could hardly recommend other people doing so :)

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Cool. The links were just for Guild Satrfire 4 (currently at about $475) and that Gibson G-400 SG (the Imommi model) - I always heard Epiphones were generally bad news? I've had a few and never liked them...but that G-40 looks good.

Gosh Body, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Howzabout the Fender SQUIER STARFIRE? I'm totally leaning towards at least a semi-hollow. They go for about, what, 8, $900?

Good Buddy, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:47 (eighteen years ago) link

wow, i had no idea they made one! fender now owns guild of course, so i dont see why not. while I think squiers are generally good for what they are, i would advise spending the little extra for a used guild.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

The Ibanez artcore stuff is really good, should sell for $300-$450 depending on the model, and is a better guitar than the Squier hands down. We sell both of them, so my bias is personal, not business related.

Before the Guild copies became squiers, they were Dearmonds (also a Fender product) and had much better pickups than the squiers or artcores. Since it's a total pain in the ass to replace pickups in semi-hollowbodies, I'd check for one of those...

Gibson will set up an authorized store – very much like the Apple iPhone/iPad environment – where all vendors can sell their applications, which we will verify are compliant with our system. Like Apple, this involves a sophisticated e-commerce site that removes the hassle and overhead for a development company and just generates a pure revenue stream for the developer.

It is our intention to roll this out to hundreds of thousands of guitars in different price points, giving all fans and consumers the ability to take advantage of this new technology. This eco-system, with a well-specified and published Gibson environment, will open up thousands of enhancements for our customers.

So I'm sure there's a dedicated thread for this, but is there such a thing as too many guitars? I'm strictly an amateur, but like any guitarist the accumulation instinct is pretty great, especially when you could get a find electric - a MIM Strat, say - for just a couple of hundred bucks. Yet of course, I can only play one at a time, so at a certain point it feels like collecting for the sake of collecting, even though every guitar plays/feels/sounds distinct. But it's so tempting to add to the (small) stack...

Related question that may also be answerable on another thread: is it better to spend less on a MIM Fender and spend the balance on upgrading pick-ups/electronics to something even better than American stock, or spend more from the start on a MIA Fender? My instincts have always pointed me to the former, considering short of fancy pants custom shop stuff I imagine most Fenders are made the same way, but some people may have a real preference for the MIM vs. MIA.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 October 2011 13:25 (twelve years ago) link

too many guitars?

I got rid of a couple recently, but it's hard to fight that need to buy gear. Not just guitars but pedals, amps, etc.. I try and keep it in check by making sure that a) everything I have I actually use, and b) selling stuff that's redundant (dual humbucker guitar when I already have one, single coil guitar when the main guitar I use already does the same things but better).

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

I can't answer the second question directly, because I've never bought a new Fender. But as someone who has spent a lot of time messing around with different pickups and wiring harnesses, I will say this - you can end up spending more time tinkering with the electronics than you spend actually playing the guitar! It's a rabbit hole that you can fall into, and it goes down a long long way. If that's your thing then great (it is mine, although not to the extent it was a few years ago), but putting down more money upfront for a guitar that already has what you want out of the box might be a better use of time/money compared to upgrading a less than stellar guitar.

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

Non-guitar example of a time/money trade-off: a couple of years ago I built a modular synth. It cost £200 in parts, but it took 200 hours of my time. Charging myself £5/hr (less than UK minimum wage), that's £1000, plus the parts cost = £1200. I'm happy with the result, but £1200 can buy a lot of synth gear.

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

i solve this problem by not having any extra money and also feeling extremely guilty about spending money on nonessential items for myself.

Weird question, but hear me out. How well would a tele-style guitar sit inside of a hardshell p bass-style case?

I've recently encountered a real space crunch in my house. When we were done reorganizing, the one thing that didn't have a home were my guitars - a tele and a p bass. I tend to go through phases of a month or so where I'll be screwing around with one instrument more than the other, so it makes sense to me to store one guitar in a less-accessible place, but I don't just want to shove it directly in a closet or whatever. And yeah, the current storage situation has just been "leaned up against whatever".

Any thoughts?

how's life, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:16 (nine years ago) link

If you are just using it for storage, no problem (if it fits, which it might or might not). Remember that it's oversized when moving it though, you can do plenty of damage to an instrument banging it off of the sides of a case that's too big.

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, this would be destined for a sedentary life behind a piece of furniture or in storage space or something, not to haul around town. Maybe with some rags padding out the inside of the case for stability. Thanks for this input.

I like playing guitars. I know next to nothing about buying a guitar. I've had three electric guitars in my life:
- Fender Squier Strat which I got when I was 15 and learnt to play on. Not a bad thing really. Good mid-tone. It did the trick.
- Ibanez, don't know what sort of model, but it wasn't very expensive. A bit light and thin-sounding for me. I got the impression it was more for metal soloists. Just not warm-sounding enough for me. Also the strings kept breaking all the time for some reason.
- Fender Telecaster - Not mine, my bandmate's which he bought for about £800 after we got fed up with my Ibanez. Nice tone, really no problem with it at all. Actually a nice thing. Shame there's no tremolo arm but that's it.

I want my own guitar. I've been playing long enough to get something half-decent, but no idea what style of guitar I want. I'm into sort of funky post-punky scratchy stuff but also warmer rhythm strumming. I don't know a lot about different styles of guitars, let alone what to look out for. I'm not supremely rich either, but keen to save and get a good all-rounder.

What should I consider when looking at different guitars and what people like about them.

Given what dudes will pay for a nice vintage Gibson or Fender, some of these boutique instruments are good value for money. I've played Kauer and Ronin basses before --they are pretty terrific (although that distressed Ronin looks like some customer's bad ideas). Pros and collectors buy this stuff -- and more and more pros as big firm guitar marketing begins to fall apart. If your choice is $8,000 for a vintage Gibson or a custom made instrument for $5,000, your choice isn't all that hard. It's the boutique instruments that go north of $7,000 or so that I wonder about (and that you almost never see on stages).

I still love the Ibanez RGs.

I ordered an offset Duo-Sonic at the back end of last month and the dealer thought it might take three or four days to come in. Over the course of the last five weeks, they haven't received a single Fender guitar or accessory. There's a new EU restriction in place on the import of rosewood - it was announced mid-2016 and brought into effect in February this year. From the sound of it, Fender haven't got their act together to confirm their CITES license so can't import anything with a rosewood board to Europe. They have kept shipping them though - so everything is getting seized by Customs - including non-rosewood guitars / accessories in the same packages.

Other companies seem to be in the same situation - so there are tens of thousands of guitars held at the UK border with no suggestion of when they might ever be released.
