Among the MGM musicals, there are a number I like better -- Meet Me in St Louis, Gigi, The Band Wagon -- all Vincente Minnelli, all more sophisticated. He utilized the medium damn well (in his non-musicals too).

I'll get back to you when I deconstruct that.
The comedy is OK, the plot is silly and the songs are warmed over. It's very good, but not a patch on V Minnelli's best.

Only issues i have with it echo morbs- o'connor a little irksome at times, kelly's autosmile, and the moses song is awful.
Everything else is perfect.
