Any responses to this fellow's work? I've seen Models and, just now, Dog Days; sought out some critical response, which was predictably polarized but unusually distanced on the warm side i.e. the people who think he's probably great can't seem to say why, other than to praise him for "depicting reality," which I don't buy. On the one hand, pure grotequerie isn't that appealing to me - if I never see another Solondz or Larry Clark movie, it'll be too soon - but on the other hand, Seidl's compositional eye is unbelievable, and the tension in his scenes actually deserves the Cassavetes comparison I read in a one review of Dog Days.

Anyhow - anybody?

Also, Neil LaBute. Though Your Friends and Neighbors compares interestingly to Hundstage, unfavorably I think; the latter has been accused of having no feelings for its characters, but the former shows what that would actually look like (unless you think LaBute has contempt, which ok yeah)

I've only seen Dog Days and found it amazing, despite the tedious misogyny. Perhaps that is part of the point for him, but I think he definitely has a keen eye for portraying themes/ideas as characters and as with Solondz and Clark, it's sad to see him bogged down with hamfisted "controversy."

twelve years pass...

Dog Days is incredible and horrible. Maria Hofstätter is great and essential comic relief, somehow reminiscent of a cross between Edith Massey & Kim McGuire.
