Zoot Woman are great!

Jacques is a hard working professional.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

He's done some great remixes but... Mr. Brightside's Killers???? I found it awful.

El Golfo, Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

What Starsailor track did he do?!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:42 (nineteen years ago) link

So Thin White Duke = JLC ? Had no idea.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:29 (nineteen years ago) link

He made Four To The Floor which became a great hit over France last Xmas.

El Golfo, Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Jacques is quite a talent, I agree. Some of his best remixes are:

Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For

The remix of this is a total change in tone from the original. Where Gwen's version was boppy, loud and a bit obnoxious, this mix gives the song a sort of sad, 80's nostalgic quality. I have no idea why. His dub is fantastic too.

Madonna - Hollywood

The remix shits all over the original in every way. No wonder Madonna used it for that infamous lesbian-ish MTV awards show performance.

No Doubt - It's My Life

Not really something to dance to, but sort of relaxed and peaceful in a way, as opposed to No Doubt's screechy original.

Felix Da Housecat - Silver Screen Shower Scene

A total overhaul that sounds nothing like the original. An unexpected surprise.

Goldfrapp - Twist

Really really weird stuff. But good. And sorta creepy too. Love the way at the end of it how everything comes too a noisy clangy clashy stop with weird breathing noises. Sounds like a machine breaking down!

Britney Spears - Breathe On Me

Took a while to grow on me but it has some great moments.

Can anyone recommended some other great mixes by Jacques?

fischerspooner - just let go

but i think i blew it and supersaturated myself with JLC this weekend. but what a weekend!

Fischerspooner seconded!

Seb (Seb), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

whirlpool productions.

disco to disco

a remix so good its on his album as a LRD track.

danny boy (danny boy), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

wasn't he the first one to start the whole 80's synth revival thing back in '99? I remember the same people who are now into all things synthesized laughing at "Hey you, what's thats sound?" and his red acid-washed jeans. No one seemed to take his music seriously, but I'm glad to see that's changed.

He also needs ever so much to release another LRD album....like NOW.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

The older LRD remixes are more my cup of tea, like the LHOOQ, Mono & Beck ones. His productions for the Two Culture Clash cd were amasing and i wouldn't complain if he'd went on in that direction, rather than produce handbag house like Juliet - Avalon

bolloxx, Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

the best thing about Disco to Disco is that is is the link between JACQUES and JUSTUS

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

JLC = the bizness. There are few people working today whose Kool-Aid I guzzle with more enthusiasm (although oddly enough I can't get into the Gwen Stefani one). At this point I listen to his remix of Danger! High Voltage more than the original - something about that rolling warlike drum crossed with that plinky synth works really well on me, and then all the whooshing synths start. Also, nobody's brought up his remix of Payback Time by the Dysfunctional Psychedelic Waltons, which is actually good enough to overcome their monstrously shitty band name.

Also: He remixed Mr. Brightside!?!!?! Good or bad, I fucking HAVE to find that. Where'd you hear it?

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I hate the Killers and hence can't get into the remix.

Jacques should remix the Ratpure.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw him DJ last night, he played that "Danger! High Voltage" remix, AND the Stefani remix, AND "From Disco To Disco"! I am fine with admitting that I (and everyone else in the place) went mental every time, it was populist crowd manipulation of the best possible kind.

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:34 (nineteen years ago) link

We had a house party last night, a good 50-60 people stuffed into this living room, played the JLQ-Gwen remix and people loved it; the sudden entrance of the drums a minute or two in was the best. There was lots of clapping. So much fun.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:36 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah it was odd when I saw him, he played every single remix he's ever done I think, and many of his own tracks. that stefani remix is a floorfiller, for sure, always works.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

the bass in that track is so massive. i didn't like it at first because of the vocals/lyrics, but i am now completely won over.

what about his classical remixes?!?! dude was robbed!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:39 (nineteen years ago) link

like many JLC/TWD remixes, 'mr. brightside's' only flaw is its inclusion of the original vocals. the first minute-thirty makes me want to finally figure out how to carry a pregnancy to term as a male. because harboring his living seed inside of me is the only thing that could be better. [ow, i feel gross.]

irrigation can save your people, Monday, 14 February 2005 12:54 (nineteen years ago) link

the Felix remix is still the greatest piece of music ever

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Why has no one mentioned the CeCile song yet? Because it's THE BEST THING EVER.

That said, I'm not sure how much I like some of the older LRD stuff. I'll have to go listen to it again.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i still like 'Hey You What's That Sound' tho i think he's come on in leaps and bounds since then. 'Sometimes' is still nice.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I know nothing about Jacques Lu Cont except for the Na Na Na Na Na song that Fluxblog had up last year sometime, which is AMAAAAAAZING.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, gotta love that one. The Faint spend their entire career whiffing at one pitch only to watch JLC knock it out of the park on his only swing.

This is, of course, EXACTLY why I want to hear the Mr. Brightside remix.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i love that faint remix!! i remember listening to it on headphones in my kitchen late at night, kinda wasted, doing dishes, i played it about 3 times in a row.

but i gotta say i still find the gwen stefani remix a little flat & boring!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Cassisus 1999 remix is good.

"There is a JLC remix album coming out later this year on Astralwerks."

A collection of his remixes or all new? Either way, I kiss you, this is beautiful news.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm guessing it is older remixes, no word on the tracklisting yet.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 02:52 (nineteen years ago) link

that Starsailor remix is the greatest pig's ear -> silk purse transformation EVER. I mean, have you all heard the original?? jesus it's bad!

haitch (haitch), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 04:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah there´s something so plodding and overblown about the original, it´s like a train crash in slow motion. JLC´s version is so sleek!

I think you begin to understand Ronan´s point about the importance of remixes lately when you contemplate all these remix collections and the breathless excitement they generate - remixes have always been the bread and butter of dance music but it seems like now more than ever the key players´ reputations are being forged through their remixes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that JLC remix album is promo'd - there's a clear tracklist theme to the ones I've acquired over the last couple days (inspired by this thread). Last one I listened to was the Grammy winner before I even knew it had won it.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

The intro is so beautiful, like Jacques standing up for DJ Sammy or something.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim otm, I mean Jacques or Tiefschwarz or Ewan Pearson before them have hardly released a single thing that isn't a remix in their recent spells of popularity.

There's something about it that suggests a healthiness and frenetic side to the scene at the moment, like could artists really be prolific enough if they were releasing all individual singles and not popping up as remixers everywhere? It really allows for an individual sound to emerge, it's a weird phenomenon of the electro-house explosion, though perhaps there are parallels with other points in history or genres, dancehall even?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I am v.into the JLC remix of Juliet's 'Avalon' at the moment (see gmail thread) but perhaps it is terrible, I don't know!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Alba's work on the gmail thread has done a sterling job for the 'JLC can do no wrong' argument. I have been convinced.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure about the Thin White Duke remix of Fischerspooner's 'Just Let Go', though.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:08 (nineteen years ago) link

What I like about JLC is you could get away with playing all his remixes in a row at a house party or something and most people would think you were playing a really great set, mixing popular and cool dance stuff effortlessly. Jacques does it all for you.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:11 (nineteen years ago) link

i rather like that Gwen remix and i fuckin hate that track so that's really saying something.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:33 (nineteen years ago) link

well i mean i the chorus of that song is so horrible i still have to switch it off, remix or no remix. the verses remind me of "somewhere in my heart" by aztec camera, bizarrely enough.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:38 (nineteen years ago) link

No - you're right!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:54 (nineteen years ago) link

barely a chorus there to hate

challop: i always preferred the other mixes of that royksopp track

That's not really a challop - the Trentemoller remix of Royksopp knocks almost everything JLC has done into a cocked hat.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Monday, 4 May 2009 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

no way, that's not even trentemoller's best remix.

jlc felix remix is above and beyond most everything...

Local Garda, Monday, 4 May 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

haitch's otherwise a+ golden period mixtape is missing his mix of missy & ciara's 'lose control' which may well be my actual favourite

what's the best trentemøller rmx if not 'what else is there?' ronan?

lex pretend, Monday, 4 May 2009 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link

unai-oh you and i (trentemoller mix) is my favourite...can't find it on youtube or spotify...

http://open.spotify.com/track/4bhV7lK7p24eAb7TFArcM9

actually there it is, mixed with what sounds like extrawelt on the way in and something else on the way out

Local Garda, Monday, 4 May 2009 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link

helped by the fact the original is also better, actually kind of a blueprint for the royksopp one imo

Local Garda, Monday, 4 May 2009 14:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Trentemoeller's Robyn mix is also pretty good. I hear he's got a mix of Seven Nation Army that makes motherfuckers' headz cave in and shit.

also to return to the subject at hand, JLC's mix of the Friendly Fires' "Cool in the Pool" is being hailed as some sort of return but I ain't buying it. the best thing he's produced since that Coldplay mix is easily Frankmusik's "3 Little Words".

jamescobo, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

love 'Jump In The Pool' but hoping he's slowed it down a bit while empthasising the euphoric chord patterns and the lush synth voices more. it's a v obvious choice of track for him to do his typical thing tho.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha it sounds almost exactly like that, lush and warm and euphoric and slowbuilding. He does something very nice with carnival drums at the end, looping them throughout. It's a really good track.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks to James for pointing out its existence, I didn't know about it.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

He keeps all the best bits of the song in and kind of puts them in different places, the enormous swell with the "keep breathing, keep searching, keep holding on" bit and the big drum smashes is all present and correct but just made bigger.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

JLC produced Frankmusik? I had no idea.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

friendly fires seems to inspire really great remixes.

my favourite jlc remix is of britney's "breathe on me"! so good. (was also gonna rep for his mix of new order's jetstream but then realized the one i was thinking of was by richard x. whoops.)

Roz, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I think he produced Frankmusik's entire last EP, but I'm certain he at least produced "3 Little Words".

jamescobo, Monday, 4 May 2009 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

For many, Take That were the original template for boyband success.

This isn't the first place I've seen that claim, and maybe it's just a Britisher-centric observation, but New Edition and New Kids on the Block both came before them and were pretty successful the world over iirc.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 July 2010 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

mm. well in fact original manager NM Smith based TT on NKOTB in the first place. the original advert for band members actually said 'dancers wanted for Britain's answer to New Kids..' or words to that effect.
