Also, I dare anyone to tell the Soo Locks that there is not very active shipping on the Great Lakes. Maybe not L. Michigan, but the Minnesota to Detroit/Cleveland and beyond taconite ships are very much still running. And they are biiiiiiiiiiig.

Oops. What otto said, too.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah but Portland is named after the town in Maine. So there's no guarantee. But it's not on the coast, it's on a river. (Or two.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I'm nerding out over this now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_freighter

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I just found out that Bengal housecats exist.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i seem to recall that they flipped a coin or something to determine whether to name the settlement portland or salem after the hometowns of the two groups of settlers who went west. or maybe it was portland and boston. or maybe i'm imagining the whole thing.

but it is a two hour drive from portland to the oregon coast. it's a nice drive though, old pine forests, some farm land, gorgeous scenery. love that drive.

Working at a recreational boating magazine ruined my brain. I have been told that commercial shipping was a tiny industry compared to what it once was (which may still be true). But I was told this by my boss, whose real point was that recreational boating is much more important.

All I'm saying is that Chicago does not see much shipping traffic. Indiana sees some.

If Chicago isn't landlocked, then neither is Duluth. And for that matter, IL, MI, MN, OH aren't either.

My meeting at the WTC is with the Unitarian Church!

Dullyouth is pretty cool when it's in full-on port mode.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Not even with the HQ of the church, but with the pastor of one individual church. How 1 church winds up having an office in the WTC is beyond me.

I *loved* the drive through Duluth up to the boundary waters. It's beautiful, and I'm sure I've waxed poetic about the breakfast I had up at the Gunflint Trail Center Lodge.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

All I'm saying is that Chicago does not see much shipping traffic

actually, as of 2004, chicago ranked 17th for us ports by gross tonnage. and ahead of any indiana port.

Portland or Boston, it was. Thank god Portland won.

Where the F does it ship from? Southside?

Yowza. Southern Louisiana takes up a lot of room at the top of all those lists.

No, that's for flirty Friday (or at least it would have been back in the day).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Boobs are easily discussed at Old Timer's, I'll tell you that.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

BOOBS!

"Chicago: Where have all the killer knockers gone?"

xpost LOLZ it's soooo true

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i vote for we talk about how my pussy is on fire, or rather how it smells kind of nice in my balzac area since i shaved.

boobs are overdiscussed. those other two topics rarely get any attention.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:25 (seventeen years ago) link

are you talking about your pussy and the fragrant bouquet of your balzac area, or those areas in general?

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

HAHAHA fragrant bouquet

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

God, Jesse. You are such a huge homo.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i had a crush on this girl for a while and she kind of dicked me around but we went to the movies 3 weeks ago and i never noticed until then that she had a killer rack. absolutely stunning. then i didn't notice again for a while but when she came over last night, bam! amazing rack in a hot machines t-shirt.

it's amazing how totally non-observant i can be sometimes.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

such things can also be dependent on the way someone dresses and carries herself. unless she's ginormous.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't know what it was. i may have been hypnotized by her ginormous eyes.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

In her eyes, is there light and heat? In her eyes, are you complete?

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, stop it.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't know what you're quoting but i vote to change this thread's name to Chicago: Where have all the serial killer racks gone?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

my balls have a nose of white musk, cedar and salt air. Before they sort of smelled of rotting jellyfish and Gary, Indiana.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

it's amazing how totally non-observant i can be sometimes.

I think I'm probably...more observant than you are.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, wait, i know what your quoting now. i would assume there is both heat and light in her eyes, as light is required for sight and either she can see or she can really mask the fact that she navigates by echo-location. i would assume the heat is somewhere around 98.6, give or take.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

serial commas/killer racks?

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

"Hints of terrycloth, bacon, and forest floor."

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Jordan, you're in the right town for observing. Big 10!

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

God, I love eyes like that.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

They make me want to reach out from the insiiiiiide.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Out from the inside of her eyes? That's pretty gross.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Terrycloth? I am familiar with forest floor and bacon, but does anyone really describe wine as smelling of terrycloth?

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

i was just listening to an ace of base song to try to get that out of my head and here you have to say something again. mountain goats cover, but still.

xp i had the impression that we weren't describing wine.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

lol @ Jesse. What impressive balzac maintenance.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

"Hints of terrycloth, bacon, and forest floor."

with suggestions of a piquant rochefort cheese and allusions to a half-empty aqua velva bottle.
