i don't know if this is the case for anyone else but gucci in particular is a rapper that i enjoy a lot more once i start to know the songs and the lyrics. not just because of the obv fact that i pick up punchlines / figure out words i didn't get at first but there's something about songs like 'pressure' that seem sort of ordinary at first but become super rewarding when you know where the flow's going. sort of like those of montreal songs with weird complex melodies--tunes from cherry peel and coquelicot come to mind, like "let's go for a walk"--that seem unwieldy at first but reveal themselves to be perfectly constructed once you sort of forget about whatever simple turn you had initially been expecting them to take
― Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 11 October 2009 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link
i meant 'hurry' instead of 'pressure' but it holds true to a lesser extent for that one. but 'rims on the m made your trim...' etc is a bit more immediately rewarding and memorable than some of the weirder stuff in pressure, like the frantic build up that leads to 'black and white chain in the libra like a zebra' which i love so so much
― Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 11 October 2009 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link
and then the mumbly wind-down to 'top back for my grandma and my beat up for aaliyah' or whatever. sorry, that's all for now
― Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 11 October 2009 00:46 (fourteen years ago) link
this shit is like a new Trap or Die...mad claustrophobic , anxious, dark sounds on here despite the subject matter. some of it seems straight out of the trap music tradition rather than some zaytoven-centric fruity swag shit. i'm sure theres plenty of zaytoven on here but it's way harder than shit like Gucci Sosa or The Movie which I think are two of his strongest releases since Back to the Trap House
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Sunday, 11 October 2009 08:54 (fourteen years ago) link

there are some joints on here that i don't remember at all, but it def has a number of his best songs - "feelin myself", "i'm a star", "georgia", "kill the parking lot", "photo shoot", "i live in a tv". it's probably up there with one of his best tapes, as mostly uneven as they all are.
― kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 19:11 (fourteen years ago) link
but, i do prefer these latest two. this latest one is kind of above and beyond imo, but the sequel has dope rhymes in the first 5 or 6 songs PLUS "awesome", "wasted" and "overboard" which are three of his best 'single'-esque songs

can someone (surfboards?) explain to me why im supposed to give a shit abt these salem gucci remixes
― i got nothin (deej), Monday, 12 October 2009 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link
hollerboard fake dubstep downtempo over formless jeezy diss tracks ?? so stupid. zaytoven is like 200x as weird & inventive.
yea i was thinking the same thing about that salem stuff
― Jacques_Lamure, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:57 (fourteen years ago) link
never thought i'd read myself saying this but attributing the salem stuff to dubstep is giving it way too much credit! i gathered they were more like some goblin suspiria type nu-indie band on an otherizing black ppl side project - told yall the hypnagogic crowd was the new threat didnt i.
anyway deej i thought you liked the xx...?

haha -- pretty sure i turned on them w/in the same threaddig that song 'shelter' but on the whole i find their project to be interesting for what it is, but a smaller, overall underwhelming 'thing' in the grand scheme
― i got nothin (deej), Monday, 12 October 2009 18:14 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah basically you aren't supposed to care rather it was just a slightly significant moment in the larger scale narrative of hipsters embracing Gucci Mane...which is a slower moving phenomenon than I would have thought but will happen nonetheless
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 12 October 2009 18:18 (fourteen years ago) link
i bet this weekend somewhere there was a room packed full of art students dancing to awful dubstep with one of these gucci remixes tossed in the mix
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 12 October 2009 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link
einh i'm suspicious of this prophecy that he'll be the next rapper to successfully crossover into the hipster realm. as fun and great as gucci can be, i don't think he's immediately weird or striking enough to get big with an audience that tends to fetishize hip hop rather than, like, absorb it. i had read about him before i had ever heard him, and when i finally did i was more "oh" than "wow." not that i disliked it, and i've ended up loving the guy, but his charms are subtler than lil wayne's and didn't blow me away right off the bat.
― samosa gibreel, Monday, 12 October 2009 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link
without making value judgements about fetishism or hipsterism, the gucci love demonstrated by folx who post on this thread is nothing if not fetishistic

uh whiney its 'constantly at the top' bcuz he just had a new mixtape come out & he's had three official mixtapes this year, never mind the stuff leaked outside those ... if mastadon or whatever was releasing 3 albums in 8 months then they would be 'constantly' at the top of new answers too

deej the whole reason i said no value judgement is because i don't think there's any thing inherently wrong w/ transcribing just-leaked tracks or making minute distinctions between different punchlines along the same running themes, just that it's pretty clearly a little fetish-y
