clicked on this in horror and there were lots of (black) south africans saying it's a SA topic, and not a derogatory term there? anyone actually know whether this is true?

Was just about to post about that. It's really interesting, actually. Black South Africans started the trending topic and claim that it's not a derogatory term in South Africa and more akin to "black folks." (Whereas the derogatory term for black South Africans would be "kaffir.") More here.

Most Twitter users love the site for its friendly, like-minded sense of community. Ian Martin, writer and "swearing consultant" on The Thick Of It, worries it's become a bit "mimsy". "I know lots of very funny, clever friends on Twitter and it's like a warm blanket when you open it up every morning. But it all just suddenly seemed a bit too comfortable."

So on 1 November, Martin started a month-long experiment: he unfollowed all his friends on Twitter and replaced them with a wildly different list. "I decided to follow the most hateful people I could find," he says. He has filled his feed with rightwing extremists, religious fundamentalists, gun nuts, racists and homophobes. Now, each day when he logs on, he says he is deluged with what Malcolm Tucker might call "arse plasma" from "the hideous mirrorworld of fuck" in the form of video links, sexist rants and antisemitic bile.

You can't add a comment. I mean, who would want to use Twitter for typing in messages to send to people, eh?

I have switched from "rt" to "via" to avoid this issue as much as possible.

they are kinda entering the facebook zone where they have a pretty great product & add ons are only gonna piss people off and make the site clunkier

i think the RT thing is just web-based - might be helpful when i want to RT something which is too long to fit in the original person's user name but not otherwise, but it doesn't matter cuz i RT through twitterfox anyway. jordan otm.

Five new restroom ambassadors will soon be tweeting from toilets at Times Square after beating hundreds of hopefuls for the coveted jobs.

They won a contest that included aspiring actors, students and even a businessman hoping to seed his enterprise for the jobs to greet and chat with tourists and hoards of holiday shoppers visiting the Manhattan restrooms.

Each winner will collect $10,000 for six weeks of work.

In addition to welcoming the guests, the ambassadors will comment and blog about their experience on social networking web sites Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

I think with Twitter is that you can thread it through pretty much any application you're using rather than being forced to actually access the site. That's a pretty big point of difference with Facebook and hopefully it'll stop them from fucking with it too much.

Me: Apology accepted. However, I’ll be keeping an eye on your adverts in future, and there’ll be trouble if it happens again.
