damn, it's a total toss up between marvin gaye and the five satins. five satins win because of the sax solo.

1956 Five Satins In the still of the night
1965 Marvin Gaye Ain't that peculiar
1966 Sam and Dave You don't know like I know
1975 Shirley and Company Shame shame shame
1966 Temptations Ain't too proud to beg
1968 Temptations I wish it would rain
1952 Jimmy Forrest Night train
1956 Drifters Your promise to be mine
1980 George Jones He stopped lovin' her today
1971 Chi-lites Have you seen her

that sax solo is basically the sourcepoint for the first julee cruise album, people.

Totally missed "Your Promise to Be Mine"--not as well known as the early-'60s hits, but one of the Drifters' greatest. I think it's still Clyde McPhatter singing, but I'm not sure.

I'm still listening my way through these. These polls have been a great source for YouTube searches.

The YouTube video of this is pretty great: Joey Dee and the Starlighters Peppermint twist

When I was in high school, the theater group I did performed a play in which an intrepid explorer is stranded on an island that worships the Temptations. We learned an elaborate bit of choreography for Ain't To Proud To Beg, which looks enough like real dancing that sometimes I break it out at parties (oh, box step, what can't you do?). The guy who wrote that play grew up to write for Lost and Charmed.

'Edge of Seventeen'. I'd never heard it before, but there was a Fleetwood Mac evening on BBC4 last night and this was on. I did not know it was the root of 'Bootylicious' either. I was loving it.

Same, same, same: I sometimes forget to actually vote in these things (and I can't recall if I did so here or not).

sw00ds, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe we ALL forgot and two lurkers voted instead?
