Uh, Nickalicious? Wrong New Haven. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Louis' Lunch is kind of neat. Still trying to remember the name of that other place. There is lots of good pizza in NH.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is it called the Doodle? And what's better for Pizza, Sally's or Pepy's?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm actually getting my New Haven geography all mixed up. And there's no one to correct me at the moment. Isn't the movie theater nearer to the Au Bon Pain?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm sitting with my back toward a Yalie right now but I don't feel like asking her!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

NO MARY DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE YALIE SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

eek!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like Pepe's pizza way better than Sally's, myself. If I recall correctly, Pepe's has a huge line out the door, but at least it's first come-first serve. Sally's (unless they've expanded and/or changed their rules), you wait forever, and if people made a reservation, they can walk ahead of you with a shit-eating grin on their face.

Or you could just skip Wooster St. totally and head for Moderne's (line is still out the door, though), which is also pretty tasty and has its share of fans.

Louis Lunch kicks ass. Richters is a pub where you can get yards.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

1. The Yankee Doodle is the breakfast place across from what used to be the Yale Co-op but is not...Barnes and Noble
2. Sally's
3. Mory's
4. Yale Center for British Art
5. Yale Art Gallery
6. Jonathan Edwards dining hall
7. Freshman Commons
8. The Anchor Bar: "no oars on the ceiling, just whores on the floor."
9. Mia's for sushi
10. The L&B room in Sterling Library

not=now

Skottie, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes: the Yankee Doodle! Thankee!

Every campus bookstore is Barnes & Noble now I guess. (sniff)

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks all...keep 'em coming! So...breakfast at the Doodle, lunch at Louis' and dinner at Pepe's.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mory's ... this was made famous by Salinger's Franny no?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh where is that then -- I'll have to throw that in.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Next door to Toad's Place, behind the library.

Skottie, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hometown of one of my all-time favorite bands EVAH...the two...the only...THE BROTHERS WEEN!!!

eh? the brothers ween are from New Hope, Pennsylvania; not New Haven, Connecticut.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh but wait we need to go to Sickler's favored among the intellectual fringe of students and steer away from Mort's and Cronin's.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've been to the Doodle twice, I think. At least once, my silverware was dirty and I could have sworn there was soap in my orange juice.

I can't wait to go back.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mory's ... this was made famous by Salinger's Franny no?

Perhaps also referenced in Tom Lehrer's "Bright College Days"?

"To the tables down at Mory's,
(wherever that may be),
let us drink a toast to those we love the best.
We will sleep through all the lectures,
and cheat on all the exams,
and we'll pass...and be forgotten with the rest..."

Joe (Joe), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I found the Mort but not Mory ref. in Salinger.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

What does Salinger call the restaurant where Franny goes with her boyfriend and then discovers-- (I don't want to spoil anything for anyone)?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

NO MARY DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE YALIE SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

(this is esp. funny since the Yalies I knew were among the meekest people I have met in my life)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

(a Yale prof was stabbed to death on campus in the 80s)

Whereas at some other schools the students just kill their roommates.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

like that one chick at Harvard who stabbed her roommate?

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's the one called Sickler's and they drink martinis and her date eats frog legs and she has a chicken sandwich. Is that restaurant around?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

h: That's whom I had in mind.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Sickler's may have been a stand-in for Mory's, but I could be totally wrong as I don't recall where I heard that.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well in any case it's always fun to go to an old diner and pretend you're in a Salinger story. (NB: This explains the Wes Anderson ouevre.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well Mary could stay in NEw York and go to Grand Central and do that.

Friends don't let friends visit New Haven.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well Mary could stay in New York and go to Grand Central and do that.

Friends don't let friends visit New Haven.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I repeat. I have been reading too many (too many) telexes.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, that could work. Sickler's is a strange name for a rest. I hope we don't run into any of those "Sarah Lawrence-Bennington types."

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boy, if you think New Haven is bad, try visiting some of the other towns on the bus route from NY to Middletown, Connecticut. Meriden and Bridgeport, f'rinstance.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mory's is known to me only for the Whiffenpoofs song Joe quoted and I'm okay with that.

I think all the small towns in Connecticut are really nice and all the "cities" really suck.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

We can take the ferry to Bridgeport! (Am. what's your CT connection?)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm mostly joking anyway. I'm sure the Centre for British Art is very nice.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary: ...

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll bring you a postcard - make sure not to send this one away:)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does anyone besides me know that old Folkways record where feminist collectives from New Haven and Chicago play terrible blues rawk?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only New Haven bands I can think of are the Saucers and Dumptruck, but those are a long time gone and there must be several thousand others.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Artie Shaw's from NH.

There were lots of New Haven doo wop groups, but um I'm forgetting the names.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ugh! New Haven is home to crap like Miracle Legion and the Butterflies of Love. Reason alone to destroy it!

I don't like New Haven, even though my mum went to Yale and I spent 3 years coming up with excuses not to have to visit her. ;-)

kate, Friday, 28 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

To be fair my affection for New Haven is all tied up in nostalgia of the most unhealthy kind.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do tell . . .

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe not "most unhealty." Just plain old unhealthy. Er, nothing interesting, I shouldn't have teased.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

does it involve bondage and co-eds?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

aw, I haven't thought about Dumptruck for a while.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only interesting story I have about New Haven involves my car getting busted into while attending a rock shoe at Yale. Noting that I've never visited any of the museums around the campus says more about me being a lazy boob than about the city sucking ass.

But, yeah, there's ... stuff. (And the movie theatre is right next to the Barnes & Noble co-op, isn't it?)

New Haven bands worth a damn right about now = I dunno. Once upon a time, there was 33.3 and the One AM Radio, but they skedaddled / reconfigured (and, while I like them both plenty, they aren't very "rocking") (the Positive-Negative Men rocked in a sub-Devo way, but damned if I know what happened to them) (& there was that rockin' post-rock quartet that used to be called Cassius, but renamed). Kate has no right to slag off the Butterflies or Miracle Legion, though.

And note that the best small towns to visit in CT (from what I can gather) are found on the borders of the state, or thereabouts.

Oh, two more recommended stops along Chapel: Group W Bench, a head shop crammed with curious goods, and our lone used book shop, the Book Trader. Some amazing stuff often turns up at the latter.

Today was North Haven, omg biggest shopping center sprawl I have ever seen in my life. Ate at the vegan Jamaican place today and then ogled at the cute beardo(s) at Edge of the Woods. Tomorrow is art museums, GPSY, and maybe Bar!

is it wednesday? (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 December 2010 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I probably take the shopping Mecca of Universal Drive for granted, but i'm not sure what makes it different from any other commercial strip-mall hellsprawl. i would never put it on a visitor's agenda. Haha. If i may ask, where are you coming from? Sounds like you're enjoying the sites and the sights during your stay. And, yay! You made it to Elaine's! :-D
