On a Courtney trip, will their next album sound like QOTSA?

PS the best/favoritist punk bands in the world today are Stubble Bunny, Mclusky and Sammo Hung. Or Fugazu or Shellac if they still count as punk.

Distillers are my favorite punk band in the world today if Good Charlotte don't count (and if Desaparecidos don't count and/or broke up). I still haven't listened to their first album, but Sing Sing Death House is tremendous. It's an accurate description to say they sound like Hole to Rancid's Nirvana, but they also sound better than Hole, Nirvana and probably even Rancid (at least post-Out Come The Wolves).

oh wow. Brody and Tim are divorcing! Weird (didn't they BOTH just sign to Warner Bros?). Though the idea of her and Josh Homme dating...I like it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 21:16 (twenty years ago) link

two really boring people! they deserve eachother.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 21:30 (twenty years ago) link

I think the hole/nirvana analogy is a bit off.

It is more like whatever the female equivalent of The Vines would be.

If you think you The Distillers are good punk rock you need to go back to punk rock school.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:21 (twenty years ago) link

Now I can't get the image out of my head of Mike pointing out things to students while a Yo La Tengo song plays.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

punk rock school is for lamors. rancid rocks.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

Chaki If you dont put down that picture of Lou Reed I am going to throw an eraser at you.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:52 (twenty years ago) link

(I think ned and I will get the joke, don't know if anybody else will)

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:52 (twenty years ago) link

I do, but I think your initial claim is funnier.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 23:53 (twenty years ago) link

they got a mention on gilmore girls, i was extremely disappointed.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 31 July 2003 00:06 (twenty years ago) link

everybody is a critic.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 31 July 2003 00:08 (twenty years ago) link

sorry, not you keith.

five months pass...
revive!

what did people think of Coral Fang? I wrote a piece about my disappointment in the Voice a while back (btw, title was not my idea - mine was the tamer "Brody's Muses") but I haven't heard a peep about people's take on it (or whether or not they even checked the album out) here. I finally heard the first album and it's terrific.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago) link

wasn't it produced by Gil Norton? I'll check it out.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

Gil neutered the rhythm section. The bastard.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

Her voice makes it hard to take the band seriously because it sounds too histrionic. Also, aside from "Hall of Mirrors" and just how propulsive it is most of the songs are unmemorable.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago) link

I really hope the next album isn't quite so monomaniacal.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't heard anything except for one song on the radio...I saw them open for the Queens of the Stone Age a few months ago and thought they were alright, nothing too special....although (whatever your opinion on the band) it's kind of easy to seem sort of "small" and "weak" in comparison to the Queens who are loud as fuckity fuck live and pretty bulldozing.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:58 (twenty years ago) link

My editor was evidently too much of a Tim Armstrong nut to let me get away with saying that Sing Sing Death House was better than any Hole or Rancid album, which I believe.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:04 (twenty years ago) link

The Distillers suck & Brody is an ugly whore & Ashley from Degrassi had a Sing Sing Death House poster in her room.
That Yo La Tengo video clip is my favourite.

Rachel, Thursday, 22 January 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

The lead singer is the wife of Tim Armstrong of Rancid

I bought the Tony Hawk game late because I r an hat0r of the nu-style goals (spell Combo in one 30-second line = boring & irritating at the same time!) so I am just now hearing the Distillers song on it: and holy FUCK is it a great song! my wife wishes my affection for this song would shrivel up and die but I can't help myself, it's so joyous. Do I need to get Coral Fang? It's the only album of theirs in the iTunes store.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:45 (nineteen years ago) link

The first two albums are the good ones, John. Yeah, catchy and joyous punk, and she sings like Courtney Love and Cartman on South Park and whichever McDonald brother sang for Red Cross in 1981. The third album is draggy, leaden, grunge sludge tedium.

chuck, Friday, 11 June 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

J0hn, get the S/T and Sing Sing Death House. Both are monstrous. You can hold off on Coral Fang for now. I have a huge love affair with Br0dy, as Chuck can attest to.

>>I wrote a piece about my disappointment in the Voice a while back (btw, title was not my idea - mine was the tamer "Brody's Muses") <<

..and my headline was the much, much livelier and funnier and more meaningful one I actually used. Also don't remember this: "My editor was evidently too much of a Tim Armstrong nut to let me get away with saying that Sing Sing Death House was better than any Hole or Rancid album, which I believe.", but if I *didn't* let Anthony "get away" with that, it had nothing to do with my own tastes (especially since I think he might be *right* about Hole, if not Rancid), since wanting writers to agree with me is the least of my concerns as an editor; may well have had to do with space, and wanting Anthony to actually say the most interesting things he had room for, though...

chuck, Friday, 11 June 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Sing Sing Death House is the only one I know, and it does indeed possess the vengeance. And if you get to see 'em live ... I wandered by semi-accident into their Cedar Falls show last year, and had the greatest time. And Brody is inky hotness.

briania (briania), Friday, 11 June 2004 18:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Cedar Falls!!!

Hey, y'know there is a venue here, if the MG's are swinging thru the midwest...

briania (briania), Friday, 11 June 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

how did I live in Iowa for eight years and not become aware that there was a place to play in Cedar Falls? I gotta have my booking agent look into it, that'd be fun

ontopic: I am living in fear of the look my wife is gonna give me when she learns that I went out and bought a Distillers album

i dunno, mine was kinda staid, but me and everybody I know who read it didn't understand what yours was about. plus it had swearing in it. I've got a mom!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:51 (nineteen years ago) link

and while Coral Fang is indeed a big drop-off, there's some pretty good numbers (favorite is "Dismantle Me") where Brody throws in some big anthemic-yet-pained repeated hook at the end (like the one that goes "he's gone away" or the one about fucking him in the eye of her sun or something) that I don't even mind the lyrical monotony and all. I'm really hoping Fang's just kind of a one-off fluke weakie.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

didn't understand what yours was about.

what I mean is that people weren't sure if that was a reference or something. In all reality I wouldn't have complained except for the word "fucking." My mom's always complaining about me and my sister (who writes for the Morning News) having such bad pottymouth in stuff we write.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:59 (nineteen years ago) link

mei (mei), Sunday, 13 June 2004 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Jess do you know this song "Seneca Falls"? Not to be all emo about it but I read its lyrics this morning (having been hearing it in the Tony Hawk soundtrack for several weeks) and googled "Seneca Falls" to see what she was on about, and...well let me just get as hyperbolic as I feel about it. I dug me some Bikini Kill back in the day, but they don't have a feminist anthem in their catalog that heart-punches me the way "Seneca Falls" does. Completely fucking awesome.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

plus it leads right into "The Young Crazed Peeling"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

(nb it's not that they read particularly well on paper, just that she sounds kinda drunk in her delivery & so seeing a line like "the thing about destiny/is that it never, ever makes mistakes" spelled out all lucid-like in reference to the 1848 Women's Conference & the long struggle that then lay ahead...just kickass political songwriting with the exact opposite effect that explicitly political songwriting is often accused of i.e. place message b4 rock/danceability, being boring/longwinded like me, etc)

Spinnerette kind of does.

I really expected I'd like the Spinnerette album more than I do. I mean, I like it fine, but it was something I figured I'd be listening to non-stop and that's not what happened.

I was a huge fan of Brody Dalle's solo album Diploid Love when it came out, but have never been able to get into the Distillers proper. Hopefully enough time has past since both those things that whatever comes of this project will be both new and good.
