Deric, why do you think Seth has "asshole potential"?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't see Taylor Swift last year, but nervous/awkward/stiff kind of sums up her presence on the show the other night. Hard to watch at times. Bunny Business and Firelight were the best bits.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

What? Her opening song was SO funny and natural. (''I bet you expect me to say/Something bad about Kanye . . .'')

Is she a really twangy country singer? I totally want to hear her music now.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link

She's, what, 20? And she was in like every skit, I'm willing to cut her a break.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the monologue was decent. I'm just thinking of her in the "Scared Straight" sketch, for instance.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

monologue was terrible, i don't know why people were laughing, there were no jokes

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:49 (fourteen years ago) link

even bunny business was their fallback "get everyone out to do a celebrity impression for no reason" sketch. some of the impressions are funny but without a real context it just feels empty and embarassing

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

"get everyone out to do a celebrity impression for no reason" sketch

Admittedly, I'm a big fan of this, and in fact, I think the lack of context is WHY I often like it -- it just becomes kind of absurd. I was even thinking, while watching Bunny Business, that I'd have been perfectly content just watching them roll out celebrity impressions for like 20 minutes. I'll take that over a sketch with a single joke that's pummeled into the ground.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link

n/a, do you like taylor swift?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the monologue was decent. I'm just thinking of her in the "Scared Straight" sketch, for instance.

Tbh, she had no business even being in that sketch. Definitely her worst one of the night. Its like they just told her to follow Kenan around and do what he does.

monologue was terrible, i don't know why people were laughing, there were no jokes

Oh come on, it wasn't hilarious, but there were some "jokes".

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't really have an opinion on taylor swift, i think i've only heard a couple of her songs. i do have opinions about comedy shows and whether they should be funny or not (hint: they should). i know swift isn't an experienced actress and snl often has to deal with hosts who aren't really actors or even "funny" and i have definitely seen worse hosts than her. i'm not blaming the shitty show on her, they were relying way more than usual on stock characters, and even the ones i like (nicholas fehn, penelope) were weaker than usual. i laughed at firelight, the newman impression, and kenan's performance in scared straight.

i honestly can't think of any jokes in the monologue song, it was all just cutesy self-references

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:11 (fourteen years ago) link

just so you can judge my taste, my favorite sketch of the season so far is "what up with that?"

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Deric, why do you think Seth has "asshole potential"?

Probably because he's a little too good at playing a believable snarky asshole. I don't really think he's an asshole. He just seems a little more aloof than the rest of the cast, maybe? Plus it probably takes a certain type-A personality to be head writer. Anyway. This is almost entirely intuitive and probably mostly in my own mind. I ain't judgin'. The whole lot of them are probably more friendly and gregarious than I am. Ain't none of 'em Chevy Chase, at any rate.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:16 (fourteen years ago) link

even the ones i like (nicholas fehn, penelope) were weaker than usual.

These characters need to be put to bed. I liked them, too, at first, but there's not enough to either of them to fuel recurring sketches. The show seems to be completely wrongheaded at the moment as to which characters are and are not deserving of recurring sketches.

For instance: 'What Up With That?' I would watch every week without complaint.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I seem to be liking Kenan a lot more this season. But dear god, no more Grady Wilson. Please? Twice was two times too many.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

kenan is really growing on me, i think i voted for him in the "worst snl cast member" poll but he's making me laugh a lot this season so far.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I think it might be that he's shedding some of his "I wanna be adored!"-ness, which is often my least favorite quality in a comedic performer (see: Jim Carrey (sometimes), Jimmy Fallon).

Yeah, but the self-referential lines were funny, sweet and well-delivered. And I know nothing about Taylor Swift's personal life (except the Kanye West debacle). Oh, and I'm totally uninterested in the Twilight franchise.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 10 November 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^^^^ this

But I also think What Up With That? is the best sketch of the season. So my taste is probably wrong.

what the fuck was that

peed on tree (k3vin k.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 05:36 (fourteen years ago) link

spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the DJ was doing. Finally decided he was using pionner DVD video decks and was "mixing" the video that appeared on the flat screen in front of him.

Def. one of the worst episodes in recent history. Only the two prerecorded parts were decent, the digital short and the throwing a party film.

dan selzer, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:25 (fourteen years ago) link

The Kristen-Wiig-as-awkward-lesbian-reporter sketches often grow funnier as they go along, but that's the first one they've done in a long long time. Outside of that and the party film, I was bored all night.

I'm annoyed that this is the one thread I can't search for my name in, to find out where I last posted/left off.

Unless of course you we're talking about me. Which is highly possible.

cracked me up that the first thing I saw when I turned on SNL last night was basically the image at the top of this thread: least funny current SNL castmember

some dude, Sunday, 15 November 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

What a bad episode. Especially in comparison to last week's.

The Kristen Wiig problem, in a nutshell, is that she's in too many sketches (some might say I could stop right there...) where she isn't part of an ensemble. Her two big sketches last night were essentially monologues, where all of the other actors were essentially props. I wouldn't even say that they were straight men. They almost literally had nothing to do.

Also! Given how little some cast members had to do in this week's episode (Will Forte, the completely absent Keenan Thompson), it's gotta get the dander up that fucking Darrell Hammond can't stay fucking gone. Jesus Christ, dude.

January Jones was a pretty WTF host choice, I mean Jon Hamm was kinda pushing it in terms of the usual minimum of fame for a host but he was pretty funny and at least he's the star of that show
