i hear this is really good btw -- previously unreleased songs during his 1992-1997 years with Death Row Records. The Lost Sessions Volume 1 contains classic unheard gems such as Eat A D*ck, Caught Up, and Fallin' Asleep On Death Row. Guests include George Clinton, The Lady of Rage, Tha Dogg Pound, Bad Azz, Tray Deee... An exclusive version for Best Buy/Napster includes three bonus cuts.

for some reason i really like freestyle 2 on writing on the wall. to the point where i'd still say it's in my top 10 of 2009 just because of how many times back to back i played it when the tape dropped

soft co caine white pretty as alicia keys

odd because that's an unusually tough chorus to rap along to, imo

Jacques_Lamure, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:04 (fourteen years ago) link

practically my only IRL convo about gucci has been w/ my sister-in-law who was kind of disturbed that "i'm a dog" is the most popular song among the 5th graders she teaches in southeast DC

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i talked to two 11/12 year olds at a park about gucci after i overheard them talking about him - i probably posted about it itt

also i had a few cursory conversations with my irl friends who read music blogs after they got wind of the shrimp top 50 thing, but they didn't see too interested

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:38 (fourteen years ago) link

moved on to hypnagogic pop no doubt

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:33 (fourteen years ago) link

more like wale & kid cudi

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:41 (fourteen years ago) link

& old wu-tang albums

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:41 (fourteen years ago) link

man that's what i dont get, how do kids big on wu end up digging wale and cudi?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:42 (fourteen years ago) link

wu-tang is probably the most popular rap group of all time amongst stereotypical white people (along with maybe snoop & dre) — ESPECIALLY indie rock fans — so it's pretty easy to see them buying into the 'new class of rap stars meme' surrounding wale & cudi

in lots of respects wu-tang serves the same fanbase as like the roots even tho wu rap about drugs & murder and all that - they have the nerd/geek vibe to them that basically every other legendary gangsta rap artist/group doesn't

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:46 (fourteen years ago) link

and wu are seen as very cerebral rap which is how guys like cudi & wale were marketed

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:47 (fourteen years ago) link

basically, ppl are stupid

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

basically there's a huge percentage of hip hop fans that are basically groundhogs that poke their head out every now and again when there's a lot of hype for something, but most of their time see their shadow and go back to bumping 36 chambers

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:57 (fourteen years ago) link

that's basically how i overuse the word basically to an extent

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:57 (fourteen years ago) link

its funny tho -- supreme clientele was like what, #87 on pazz and jop the year it dropped?

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:03 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't get the feeling that ghost solo records are that big of a deal to these people - i think it's like al said, lots of old wu listening (and like new lupe records)

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:07 (fourteen years ago) link

it was #14 -- big critix touchstone from the jump (xpost)

some dude, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:08 (fourteen years ago) link

huh never realized.

j0rdan's post is totally wrong tho -- those are exactly the ppl who are apeshit about ghost solo albums

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:09 (fourteen years ago) link

u might be right

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 04:17 (fourteen years ago) link

basically there's a huge percentage of hip hop fans that are basically groundhogs that poke their head out every now and again when there's a lot of hype for something, but most of their time see their shadow and go back to bumping 36 chambers

rings sooo true :(

the only IRL conversations i've had about gucci mane are with hip-hop journalists and djs. jordan, a while back one of your friends posted an amazing take on the "gorgeous" lyrics on your fbook which gets stuck in my head as often as the actual lyrics - "i keep hearing voices/telling me to eat, so i buy hershey's kisses" or something.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 08:59 (fourteen years ago) link

hahahaha, i don't remember that \o_O/

nog right (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 15:03 (fourteen years ago) link

idk what my gucci top 10 '09 will be but i pretty much know that "my shadow" will top the list. the backing ad libs, the way the intensity just rises and rises...such a great song.

something like "foreign" should be a mainstream single, not trash like "spotlight"

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 22:46 (fourteen years ago) link

bricks...bricks...bricks...rats...rats

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:08 (fourteen years ago) link

<3 foreign, but it's too weird to be a mainstream single imo. it's so throbbing and almost droney in its ungrooviness, it could almost be a madlib beat.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

lex its 'racks' -- a rack is $1000

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

lol thx

"rats" kinda fits the backstreets paranoia of it all though!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i love how drake's verse in "street cred" is mixed real quiet, makes it much easier to ignore. mike fucking slays his verse

k3vin k., Thursday, 12 November 2009 02:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not sure if i'm 100% behind street cred. they sound so exhausted, like it was 3 am at the studio and gucci was like "okay, fuck, alright, i'll do another take" and that's the one they picked.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 12 November 2009 06:30 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that song is only okay - i mean the chorus is dj drama shouting - i love dj drama shouting as much as the next guy but

see-those-tit-ies (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 06:32 (fourteen years ago) link

oops i thought you were talking about this "street cred"
