My god, I figured it would be funny, but those two sketches are out of hand.

two weeks pass...
I've never seen this show but I'm going to a taping of it tomorrow ... anything I should know/shout? This thread is only slightly enlightening.

So, I dont need you honey,

I LIKE "Turn My Headphones Up." That shit made me shoot Maker's Mark out of my nose. Am I truly alone?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

You are not alone I am here with you!

kitty, Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

The "turn my headphones up" sketch coupled with the Make-a-Wish foundation sketch that came after it had me splitting up for hours.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

There is a site my friend told me about that is for white trash people, and they totally diss dave.

kitty, Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

you're in luck, kitty; you've found it.

Paul Mooney's doing a version of "People's Court". How bad do I want to give somebody a reason to take me to small claims now?

Okay i'll take you to court for being a dork!

Users who have signed up for this band also like:
Dave Chappelle

Radiohead

System Of A Down

Incubus

The Strokes

WTF?

oops (Oops), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:17 (twenty years ago) link

A big chunk of Chappelle's audience is white college-students and teens, why would that list of bands shock you?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

I think that list is quite different from the list of musical guests that have been on his show.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 11 April 2004 07:33 (twenty years ago) link

The musical guests aren't who his Comedy Central audience would choose, either. (except maybe Kanye? - I wanted to slap him for wearing a backpack to perform)

important question: is the Rick James sketch in season 1?

season two, fifth ep.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 31 May 2004 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i saw this show the other night (chappelle's show, or whatever) and found it strained and mostly unfunny. no idea why people like this guy, unless he's selling himself seriously short with his show.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 31 May 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

What is funny to you?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:14 (nineteen years ago) link

how am i supposed to answer that question?

lots of things.

all of the humor on the show i saw was predicated on the whole "black people/white people" thing. i know chappelle is working with an unusual degree of self-consciousness when he does these kind of jokes, but that doesn't make them any deeper or funnier, in fact it makes them infinitely worse. the show seems to carry little conviction.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe this is a canadian people/american people thing.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Am. is American though, isn't he?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I think your mistake is looking for deepness of conviction. Chappelle's funniest stuff are built around one-liners - cocaine is a helluva drug, I'm rich biatch!, etc.

My favorite skit from both seasons is the "Samuel L Jackson Beer" (instead of Sam Adams)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

haha because samuel l. jackson will "fuck you up, motherfucker!" or whatever. yeah, laff riot.

i'm american.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

p.s. humor without conviction is lame humor.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a bunch of conviction on the good sketches (see: "Trading Spouses", "Mad Real World", "Racial Draft", etc etc). The show is really spotty, though. There are, like, 3 sketches an episode and usually only one of them is great.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe i just saw a bad episode. i'm totally willing to believe that he has done better.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 31 May 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

The show took a little while to grow on me, but the mediocre stuff is definitely worth sifting through.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 31 May 2004 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

ok, but this particular kind of mediocre is really a turn-off for me. someone will have to suggest to me a skit or something that is really good, that i can seek out.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 01:09 (nineteen years ago) link

The Niggar Family
Black Bush
Negrodamus, then The Wayne Brady show
Popcopy

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 01:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I really don't like Popcopy.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 01:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't really think any of those are hwat Amatuerist is looking for (Wayne Brady and Niggar Family are great, though). The three I listed above are probably better examples of commitment and character work.

I'll add my appreciation for:
Jury Duty ("That's my Robert, always peeing on people.", "Nicole Simpson can't rap!")
Making the Band ("I only drink the finest breastmilks.")
