it's certainly not sadder than ilm
and while we're outing ourselves as total saddoes for having watched more than our share of sketch comedy, 1980 had some pretty amazing musical guests

I'm a big SNL apologist, but I'd rank the last one among the worst episodes in the past 10 years.
the host was visibly inept, the musical guest was not only an abomination but performed 3x, and the sketches were uniformly unfunny. your best effort is farting grace kelly? really? really?
deric's otm re: wiig. she's great but they let her run off with the show too often. seems like every skit she is in has exactly one joke, and that's whatever character tic she's riffing on.

leave it to bobby moynihan to be the low point in a grace kelly farting sketch.

Three notes, in order of least important to most important:
- Jones was really amazingly bad (and I'm not sure how I feel about her whole current effort to make herself known outside of Mad Men anyway)
- okay so once again: what is it about having Jenny Slate in a sketch that creates this weird sense of total awkwardness? I don't think I have anything against her -- I thought she was kind of terrific on Bored to Death -- but this is the second time she's been prominently featured in a sketch and it's just seemed totally awkward and wrong in some nebulous cringing way. (the first time being that kinda biker-chicks sketch, which really wasn't just a writing problem, it was some kind of vibe/energy she has that just translates freaky-awkward on TV, maybe)
- thank you SNL for TOTALLY RUINING my previous weekly habit of annoyingly singing "MAD MEN, MAD MEN" along with the theme song

Season 5 is about to come out on DVD this xmas. I wonder if they're even gonna bother putting out Season 6 or just jump to the Dana Carvey era.
From what I understand, they're jumping past the Carvey era, and the next season they're gonna release after 5 will be Will Ferrell era. Which makes sense from a marketing standpoint, but (even though I really had no realistic hope that they were going to release season 6 anytime soon) I'm a little disappointed nonetheless.

grace kelly farting would be an amusing sidebar in one of hader's vincent price sketches, but as the raison d'etre for an entire sketch? feels like they're not even trying.

Tell me, was this the kind of unfunny SNL ep that puts you to sleep and you realize only later was atrocious, or was this of the unintentional comedy, "hmm...maybe anybody could do this for a living?" unfunny? The latter can be entertaining.

Well, look. If you do improv or write sketch stuff at all, you learn pretty quickly (even at a beginner level) that fart jokes and gay jokes are really easy and rarely good and are to be avoided as much as possible. This week's episode suggests that the SNL writers haven't quite reached that point in their comedy education.

OR it suggests that the host sometimes has a little too much control over the material. OR it suggests that the producer should exercise a little less control over the material. OR it suggests that the head writer should exercise any level of quality control over the material.

I personally like fart and poop jokes as much as the next guy, Whiney, but you've gotta bring something interesting to the table (see: 'toilet scissors' on the Asssscat! DVD).
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link
one thing that might have buoyed the fart sketch a bit would be if Jones could have made halfway-funny farting faces instead of just standing around blankly. (I mean if the whole joke is some gulf between guest actress/guest's persona/Grace Kelly on one hand and "farting" on the other, selling it and making it funny is all on her, and I can imagine plenty of actresses who could have made it way less lame.)
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link
Basically, either she should have been way more of a ditzy airhead (the lines pointed in that direction, particularly with all that "was that me?" stuff) or the sketch should have been rewritten to have her act like a stereotypical trucker, with belching, cursing, inappropriate scratching and outrageously lewd commentary mixed in with the farting and the sketch should have been about Jimmy Stewart getting thrown off by the dichotomy between the "real" Grace Kelly and the "acting" Grace Kelly. (They could have played this up by having, say, Will Forte play the gross, obnoxious Grace Kelly and JJ play the on-camera "acting" Grace Kelly but that might have been hammering the point a little too much.)

you guys don't know funny at all.
what sold the sketch to me was the juxtaposition of her dead-eyed stare with the sloppy, wet fart sounds
