I personally like fart and poop jokes as much as the next guy, Whiney, but you've gotta bring something interesting to the table (see: 'toilet scissors' on the Asssscat! DVD).

one thing that might have buoyed the fart sketch a bit would be if Jones could have made halfway-funny farting faces instead of just standing around blankly. (I mean if the whole joke is some gulf between guest actress/guest's persona/Grace Kelly on one hand and "farting" on the other, selling it and making it funny is all on her, and I can imagine plenty of actresses who could have made it way less lame.)

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Basically, either she should have been way more of a ditzy airhead (the lines pointed in that direction, particularly with all that "was that me?" stuff) or the sketch should have been rewritten to have her act like a stereotypical trucker, with belching, cursing, inappropriate scratching and outrageously lewd commentary mixed in with the farting and the sketch should have been about Jimmy Stewart getting thrown off by the dichotomy between the "real" Grace Kelly and the "acting" Grace Kelly. (They could have played this up by having, say, Will Forte play the gross, obnoxious Grace Kelly and JJ play the on-camera "acting" Grace Kelly but that might have been hammering the point a little too much.)

you guys don't know funny at all.

what sold the sketch to me was the juxtaposition of her dead-eyed stare with the sloppy, wet fart sounds

um, dude? (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

The sketch was amusing but she completely ruined it by cracking up at it, particularly since no one else was laughing.

(lol so basically I'm trying to rewrite it so she was in less of it)

a Barbie-like nub where he provates should be (HI DERE), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

well, yes, she shouldn't have been laughing, obv, but that's a problem with the performer, not the sketch

um, dude? (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

they should have had grace kelly strenuously argue that it's a part of her "method"

鬼の手 (Edward III), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

haha not to get all comedy-dissecting but yeah, I agree with you, Whiney, that was the one level on which I laughed at it, but even THAT wasn't the way it was played -- if the idea was to have her stand demurely while horrible fart-noises boomed around, that wasn't well done either! (cause like she did attempt a couple unfunny fart-faces, as I recall.) I mean, I dunno, like Dan's going into, there are several different directions you could play the joke in and the sketch didn't do any of them very well, and I basically wound up sitting there mad at myself for laughing so hard at just the fart sounds (which I would laugh at even coming from a blank screen with no associated characters)

I, for one, completely endorse an episode of SNL hosted by fart sounds

I, for one, completely endorse an episode of SNL hosted by fart sounds Larry King

Only if Larry King is played by Norm MacDonald:

As everyone else is saying: the skit would've been better if it was not just flatulence that ruined Grace Kelly's pristine image.

Cunga, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 01:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Imagine how funny it'd be if they had Grace, when the camera wasn't rolling, talking about how her own experiences with voyeurism help her get into character each day. She could start going into these lurid college stories and Hitchcock would have to stop her (as well as yank Jimmy Stewarts' hand from his pants).

And why stop at debasing Grace Kelly? The second the movie camera stops they should've had Jimmy Stewart telling off-color jokes and joking about wheel chair sex with Grace Kelly. Just hearing a Jimmy Stewart impersonator be vulgar would be worth a few chuckles.

Then you'd have the pompous Alfred Hitchcock being the voice of moral authority etc. As it is it's Grace Kelly farting while Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart watch - which is a letdown.

would that be funny

Dana Carvey did everyone about twenty years ago, so that doesn't surprise me. My quickly thought-of suggestions probably are lame, but it's hard to convey the humor of farce in cold print.

I love all the SNL fanfic in this thread. Would the masturbating Jimmy Stewart sketch be intended as a part of the official SNL universe or is this a multiverse spin-off?

Well, look. If you do improv or write sketch stuff at all, you learn pretty quickly (even at a beginner level) that fart jokes and gay jokes are really easy and rarely good and are to be avoided as much as possible. This week's episode suggests that the SNL writers haven't quite reached that point in their comedy education.

ugh remember the Paul Rudd episode last year that felt like 80% gay jokes?

that is not shocking considering the general genre of paul rudd's humor

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 02:46 (fourteen years ago) link

So the next three hosts are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Derek Jeter, and Jon Bon Jovi.

I guess the last ten years just didn't happen or something...?

Oh, and Jake Gyllenhaal in there somewhere, too. My general point still stands.

I don't know why exactly, but that host list makes me really sad. Like seriously sad.

Hello this is SNL, they won't be afraid to continue beating that "joke" into the ground. Guarantee it will be on that episode.

Jake Gyllenhaal

His first time was classic for the "Law & Order Acting School" sketch alone.

I think JG-L should be pretty decent too. Granted, he was only a kid on 3rd Rock, but he could probably be a funny adult too.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 03:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah. There's just no part of me that understands Bon Jovi or Jeter, though.

If memory serves, this will be an encore performance for Jeter. I don't remember his first time being funny, though. In fact, I barely remember it at all.

I don't know about the other guys here but I send all my SNL Skit Remixes to Lorne Michaels when the season is over. Like any good remix they are supposed to make him think "what if?"
