man gram doesn't come off well at all in the hotel california book i'm reading. he really bummed a lot of people out.

there's an early - prob international submarine band era - vid clip of gram performing on a boat - so he's prob 'luxury liner', really can't remember - where he does this terrible, i mean just awful, camp jagger impersonation, kinda punctured the myth a bit for me, for a while - but so glad i finally got to hear his vocal version of '100 years from now', one of the bonus tracks on the expanded edition of 'sweetheart'
i def remember an old ilx thread where lots of ppl were really slagging of 'sweetheart' and i was like :-((( so thanx for this thread folx

prob singing 'luxury liner'
― Ward Fowler, Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link
i guess i always sorta suspected this? what little i know of his life (i'm vague on much other than "harvard dropout," "was in byrds," "liked drugs," and "friends stole body, supposedly?"), for some reason, made me assume that he was better at singing country than he was at conducting life

yeah, don't get me wrong. i like this album and the burritos stuff a bunch. just weird reading about how he was really a non-entity to a lot of people at that time. like an "oh is that guy still alive?" kinda thing. but, you know, its 1969! he wasn't taken seriously by a lot of people. the myth came later.

banjo on pretty boy floyd, yes. is that mcguinn playing or is it a sparkly nashville session dude.

yes that alt version is supreme
its john hartford, he used to be on the smothers brothers show and had hit with "gentle on my mind"

This went into regular rotation with me when I picked it up for a buck in 2006 and it's never actually gone away, and yet it always feels like this album I'm recently getting into - always fresh, always familiar. "100 Years" was my favorite for the first few years; since I picked up a booze habit it became "You're Still On My Mind." Thanksgiving this year included a 2 AM, everybody in a deep pleasant full-tummy buzz zone; someone had a guitar and we all fell into harmony for "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." Feel-good music at its best, for me.
So, uh, should I check out their other records one of these days?
