Nothing they cooked up this week has anything near the staying power of Omeletville (though that's been beaten into the ground, ffs).

who is you person that gets haughty about people not knowing by heart the faces of two cast members who've only been on the show for 7 episodes!?

turkey turkey turkey let's all get basted (some dude), Monday, 23 November 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess i should go outside and play in the wilderness, though, that would definitely help me memorize the faces of television personalities, for sure.

gotta admit that reba digital short had me rolling. saw the JGL monologue clip, gotta give it to him for sheer effort

Nhex, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:21 (fourteen years ago) link

what really put that over the top for me was that Kenan's Reba impression was kinda spot-on. i didn't even see the 'twist' coming since the Lonely Island album has E-40 playing Carlos Santana on a track, I thought it was just gonna be like that.

JGL's voice sounded weird all night to me, it occurred to me that the only grown up roles I've seen him in (Brick and The Lookout) was doing these mannered monotone voices and even when he wasn't doing some character on SNL I was like wait is that what he actually sounds like or what?

i learned about it a while back from this thread: SNL-related couple you'd rather hang out with

i also just learned looking at that thread that Fred Armisen is apparently 42 years old, wow

he sorta dresses like a middle aged dude in sketches where he plays himself or someone like himself, but yeah i had him at around 35. damn

will.i.ban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 05:07 (fourteen years ago) link

What's crazy is that he didn't get into comedy at all until he was in his mid-30s. Just played drums before that.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 05:09 (fourteen years ago) link

those kinds of stories give false hope to so many. go armisen!

Rodney Dangerfield didn't start stand-up until he was like in his 40s!

yeah comedy seems like a calling that doesn't reach everybody early in life, i'm just saying i've never looked at armisen and thought "that dude is over 40"

finally watched the JGL episode, and dude sang in EVERY sketch he appeared in before Weekend Update (monologue, password, jack johnson show, t-giving dinner, what's up with that?). was he just singing at the offices all week and they decided to use it?

da croupier, Monday, 30 November 2009 12:39 (fourteen years ago) link

What happened in the JGL monologue? Hulu cut it out.

mooncup journey to vaja (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 November 2009 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I assume he sang some copyrighted song?

mooncup journey to vaja (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 November 2009 13:56 (fourteen years ago) link

He sang "Make 'Em Laugh," from Singin' in the Rain. But yeah, I think NBC strips out for Hulu any musical performance for which they'd have to pay additional royalties.

saw his interview on Fallon earlier in the week and he kept talking about how he'd gotten an idea for his monologue as soon as he was booked for the show and had been practicing it for like 2 months before even meeting with the writers.

loluminum siding:

As a teenager, he got his start writing jokes for standup comics; he became one himself at 19 under the name Jack Roy. He struggled financially for nine years, at one point performing as a singing waiter (he was fired), and also working as a performing acrobatic diver before giving up show business to take a job selling aluminum siding to support his wife and family. He later said that he was so little known then that, "At the time I quit, I was the only one who knew I quit!"

no wonder they were like "holy shit, this guy really likes to sing...let's just have him do that in everything."

i dunno i kinda thought 1973 colonel sanders NASA job applicant potato chip regurgitator thief collecting his hemorrhoid donut on the way out the door skit was pretty fantastic and unless i'm overlooking something pretty obvious maybe even the best job interview oriented SNL skit since the chris parnell/christopher walken "we don't hire dirty centaurs" classic
