I had promised I wasn't going to play this any more, but here's 105:

Well, the ship's the QE2, which doesn't really narrow it down that much really, since it's been everywhere. I'll guess Honolulu.

You usually guess mine instantly, ailsa, but not this time. Here's another angle:

galveston?

harbl, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

the downtown structure def. looks north american, and that little jetty looks forested, and the light makes it look fairly high latitude, which makes me think it's in canada, but since there are no mountains within ~50 miles of the first shot, it's not vancouver. maybe an atlantic city like halifax? thunder bay?

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:37 (fourteen years ago) link

You're all way off.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

A Coruna? Valencia?

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

perth?

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

(not the one in scotland)

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

None of those. I could post a suitably gritty street scene, if you'd prefer to guess from micro rather than macro.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:03 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought maybe it was perth earlier, but it doesn't seem to match the google maps aerial. then i checked all 100K+ cities in new zealand, no go. can you tell us which hemisphere this is in? i've already spent way too much time on this one.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah post that street scene

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I've just been googling round European ports with no joy.

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

durban?

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

that looks like a rugby ground to me

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

the buildings almost look too modern to be a developed european city, plus the stadium in the lower left of the second picture looks like a soccer stadium now that i think about it. so now i think this is def. south america and not def. north america like i thought before.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

(yes, or "rugby")

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

is it kingston

harbl, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought it was an athletics ground or a v. old football stadium

Durban

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Results 1 - 10 of about 10,500 for "mr phone". (0.17 seconds)

damn it

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Correct ailsa, but caek gets the points!

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I googled MTN, found they were South African, and went straight for Durban on google maps

(the ground is a cricket ground, btw)

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry for postponing your moment of triumph, caek, but the street scene picture took about ten minutes to upload - I was bloody well posting it after that wait.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, I never even spotted caek saying Durban. FAIL!

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:21 (fourteen years ago) link

hahah

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

someone else post one

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm on dialup, too slow to go looking for a good one

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:24 (fourteen years ago) link

durban was a really good one, btw.

That's beautiful. I'm bowing out now though, I've got work to get on with - you pesky kids have already cost me an hour.

likewise ismael! and excellent work, caek. i had tried cape town after abandoning canada (???) but then went elsewhere...

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

ailsa yours can be 107 and mine'll be 106.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

106 almost looks like bristol, but the topography is wrong and they are driving on the right.

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:31 (fourteen years ago) link

omg yes the return of my favorite thread ever wahhhh

69, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

107 looks like it's in england (e.g. villa in the bottom right, smallish size of fields in the background), but i don't recognize the river at all, so i guess it's not. hmmm.

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:34 (fourteen years ago) link

106 athens?

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

107 is Inverness. And I am bowing out now.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

haha

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

106 looks Baltic or Scandinavian. Gdansk, maybe?

Ismael, correct, I have no better imagination that to use my home town!

ailsa, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, athens was nuts. that's northern europe.

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link

106 nope not athens. gdansk is a gdanswer but you're off by over a thousand miles.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

hahaha

caek, Monday, 30 November 2009 21:39 (fourteen years ago) link
